I went there last night (Monday)(and was actually lucky enough to be sitting at a reserved table for mamma's family)..anyways it was my first time there, and being from Chicago I thought my days of goign to great blues bars were lost. Well I was happily proven wrong last night! This place is AMAZING and they definatly converted me into a regular there. Many peopel have said it's only $5 on Monday's, but it's actually $10..the drinks are insanely cheap, and around 11:00ish they serve food (for free) and it's amazing...fried chicken, hush puppies, potato salad ect.... I felt like I was visiting an old friend in the south, and them treating me like family...it was great! I highly suggest it to anyone and everyone!

Pros: great blues music, free food, amazing atmosphere

Cons: Hot (though that can be viewed as a pro as well)

One of the best places in LA on a monday night. Finally! Going to this place is like walking out of LA and into the south side of Chicago. Like Chitown's Checkerboard and Lee's Unleaded Blues, Babe and Ricky's has good music, inexpensive drinks, and great atmosphere. Harvelle's and the other Leimert Park joints are cool, but this place is rollicking fun. The covers even includes a late night soul food buffet! Be sure to catch Mickey Champion singing.

My wife and I went to this "venerable Icon" on 01/29/05. The stage band contiually attempted to insert some energy into a lackluster performance. The food was expensive but adequate.

All in all we were dissapointed and went home early that night.

I have seen and heard much better.

Reputed to be the oldest blues club in Los Angeles. $8-9 cover and a two drink minimum, and be sure to bring tips for the band as well. The house band is great when the loud guitar player isn't there - the two saxophone players personify the blues and the harmonica player is amazing. I was worried that the venue was in a dangerous neighborhood, but it wasn't too bad at all. I personally didn't have to dodge any bullets. Food is okay.

Great cover ($8) on a Friday night. The band Mighty Balls of Fire is a 5 member band (with guest musicians and singers occasionally) and they play 4/5 sets of awesome blues in a span of 5 hours. The space is intimate and not at all intimidating (despite the location). Parking isn't ample, so come early so you can get a space in the lot where there's security. Only soul food on the menu (generally salty and fatty), so if you're not into it, eat before getting here.

If you want a unique and truly joyous evening, check this out. Fabulous music, welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, great food (a feast for $5 on Mondays - but beware, you won't eat until 11 pm) and the friendliest and most interesting people you'll find west of the Mississippi. If you even like the blues a little bit, don't miss out on this - once you try it, you'll be hooked!

This is one of the greatest little-known places in LA by far. I was a bit hesitant about going to South Central late at night, but the trip was well worth it. Monday nights are extra special: Not only does "Mama" charge a mere $5 at the door for a night of blues and all the collard greens, fried chicken and hushpuppies you can eat, but then you you get the midnight pleasure of witnessing "Your Living Legend Miss Mickey Champion" turn up the heat with her no-mic-needed wailing and cat calling. She can't be more than 4 feet tall, probably well into her 70's and wears a sweatshirt that says "FLIRT" on it. Her motto, she will tell you, is "There's no shame in my game". Go reclaim your soul every Monday night with the help of the Gospel according to Lady Champion!

Pros: real cool, free parking, authentic

Cons: crowded, becoming too popular, sketchy neighborhood
