I really wanted to like this place. When the first appetizers came out cold, I thought, "hmm, maybe they are supposed to be served cool." When the main course wasn't warm either I started to have my doubts. The service was fine,

After an afternoon of hitting some Noe Valley boutiques my husband joined me at Valley Tavern for a Newcastle. We decided to try this place, next door. We tried two items on the specials menu - Asparagus Soup and Lobster Enchilada. Both

Designation by SF WEEKLY as being "the best place in town for pig" first propelled me to 15th and Valencia, along with curiosity about Yucatan food. (I didn't remember anything distinctive from travels to the Yucatan, encountering none of the dishes on the restaurant's menu).

The restaurant ("My Beautiful Yucatan" in English) indeed has several delicious pork dishes. Poc Chuc is my favorite, a delightful (and bounteous!) mixture of grilled pork, radishes, avocado, and lettuce (more akin to the Southeast Asian meat salads than to usual Mexican restaurant fare) with black beans and a stewedtomato sauce on the side. My partner goes for Frijol con puerco (stewed pork in black bean soup). Others prefer Cochinita pibil, pork roasted pork in a (red) achiote sauce, with reddish purple pickled onions. It is wrapped in a green banana leaf (don't try to eat the leaf!).

I have also tried turkey (pavo) in mole (unsweetened chocolate and peanut sauce) and other ways and my partner praised the carne asada (grilled beefsteak)

The large salads are also good and easily serve two. We usually order the Kukuklan salad: mixed greens with mandarin orange. The friendly staff is accustomed to bringing two smaller plates so that a salad can be split.

The tortilla chips come with two salsas, one (habanero) of which is too picante for most (it is served in a smaller dish; the waitresses warn new visitors about it).

The tables have Mayan paintings. The only other decor is indigenous skirts on the walls.

There is a bar and a variety of Mexican beers and of nonalcoholic Mexican beverages. Mexican desserts are not my favorite, but after a salad and a pork entree, there is no room for any in my stomach. Pozole is served on weekends (another nonfavorite of mine, but popular with Mexicans with hangovers).

Open 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Saturday, until 10 p.m. Sunday.

PROS: pork, kukuklan salad, service
CONS: can be noisy
