This place is awesome! If you are looking for some good Mexican food, hot salsa & huge beers this is the place to go to. The enchiladas, and the flautas are the BEST!! Food is always piping hot, but the service is so so. It can get pretty crowded here so there could be a long wait depending on the day.
I have been going to Tlaquepaque with my friends and family for way over 10 years now. The food is always so fresh and very tasty and service is very friendly. I always feel like I'm at home when I'm there. Although dinner and weekends are very crowded, it is worth the wait. They also have two other locations close by. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, I have never had a bad experience there. Oh so yummy!!! Go try it you will be hook too...
I haven't tried too many of their dishes because I always get their carnitas burritos (their Al Pastor and chicken is quite good as well). They are around 5 bucks and I must say they have the some of the best in town. I don't even try going during dinner time on the weekends though, they are too crowded. They do however have two other locations that are very close by: one is another small place about 4 blocks away on the corner of Curtner and Canoes Garden Way (where Jack-n-box is); and the other is a MUCH larger place (with a bar) on Willow Street near 87. They are all casual, everyday-type places and all have comparable food.
Taqueria Tlaquepague has so much potential - good location, great food, etc. However this place is just dirty and the service is awful. I just can't understand why people flock to this place when there are other great Mexican restaurants in the San Jose area that try harder for their customers, such as Amigo Burrito on Stevens Creek. I wonder if the owners of Taqueria Tlaquepague have any pride in their business. This place has never been clean when I have been there and in need of a major makeover. While I love small funky restaurants, they have got to be clean. I can't say I will ever go back here. Very sad.
Pros: Good Food
Cons: Dirty, unfriedly service, very limited parking.
Food is good -- authentic and plentiful. You'll get baskets of fried chips and homemade spicy salsa at your table. The menu has a good variety of traditional Mexican fare. Their chicken dishes, in my opinion, are top notch. No weird dark chicken here -- lots of shredded white meat chicken in their taquitos, burritos, etc. The flautas are the best!
However, I must say that their service is slow and you could wait a long time to be seated. Especially for dinner most nights and lunch on Sundays. Parking is pretty limited, too, so be prepared to find alternate parking on the street, etc. Plus, the strip mall they're in is pretty seedy, which doesn't really help matters.
The other location on Willow is about the same on all fronts (parking, food, service), but the area is a little nicer. However, it's frequented by some pretty dicey characters and we've stopped going there, even though it's in Willow Glen. I don't need to look at the Virgin Mary tatooed on anyone's head while I eat lunch.
Overall, maybe just better to get take out and avoid the restaurant experience altogether.
Pros: Good food. Good for take-out.
Cons: Slow service. Limited parking. Iffy atmosphere.
Being Mexican, and having grown up eating homemade Mexican food at home and in garages/makeshift taquerias in Guadalajara, I must say this is THE BEST Mexican food you can get in San Jose and beyond. The ambiance is terrific (especially in their new location on Willow Street). It is truly rare that you find great food with great ambiance. With Mexican Restaurants it's usually either/or (i.e., Pedros/ambiance or El (name your hole-in-the-wall)/food). I tell everyone who will listen: THIS IS SIMPLY THE BEST YOU CAN GET.
Pros: FOOD, AMBIANCE, SERIVICE
Cons: , CAN BE A BIT CROWDED, THERE'S ONLY TWO!
The service at Taqueria Tlaquepaque is greatly improved. While I would agree two years ago that it was an issue it is fine now. Everyone is friendly and on top of that there is not one thing on the menu that is not worth trying. There is no other mexican place worth going to after you have been here. The salsa is great, and try some of the salsa verde (have to ask for it) as well as the red salsa.
Pros: Excellent food, Authentic, Salsa Verde
Though the food is a little pricier than other taquerias in the area, its worth it. I usually get my food to go because the wait for a table is usually too long.
Pros: Inexpensive, Good food, spicy
Cons: Bad Parking, crowded
I love tlaquepaque taqueria i think it is one of the best but the service is the worssssse ever. if you have all day off nothing to do then go and tasted but if you are like me with little time go somewhere else.
Pros: good food, good drinks, good food
Cons: bad service, no a/c, no help from busers
