It'll definitely be different for him at first, because the campus is so large, that one can feel consumed by it. But you should definitely encourage him to find his niche and to pursue it--that way, the transition is smoother and his high school experience will be more enjoyable. The school has three academies (unique programs with a specific focus): teaching, finance, and space tech.

However! With our recent California budget crisis and Arnold cutting so much money in Education, I would very much recommend you to continue to send your son to a private school. I've been to a few informational district meeting as well as school site council meetings, and it's just so upsetting how the DISTRICT is handling it.

So the bottom line is, Independence is an excellent high school, but the district needs new admin. They're notorious for "losing" documents.

This is not a review since I know nothing about IHS. I am just a "worry sick" mother whom her son might enter IHS next year as a 9th grader. He has been attending very small, private schools since he was three. Is there any advise for me so I will not be so afraid for his safety?.Thank you,

How rude.

I am a senior at Independence HS and I'll have you know that Independence has more of their students attending 4 year universities straight out of high school than their rival Piedmont Hills HS. In the last 5 years, we've had at LEAST one student accepted to Stanford University every year. On top of that, we also have students occasionally accepted to Harvard, Cornell, and Brown. So excuse me, when you say "...lacks respectable experience essential for guaranteeing the students the full expanse of the education they need to succeed".

Independence does more than enough to provide students with all the materials and resources they need in order to pursue a successful life after high school. If students are interested in attending college after HS, a rigorous A-G course load is offered to students as well as AP classes. There are a vast amount of clubs on campus for students to explore their passions: performing arts, sports, community service, etc. Not only that, but students that are NOT interested in college after high school have the opportunity to participate in C.C.O.C. (Central County Occupational Center) which allows students to work hands on in the occupational field of their interest.

I would recommend every parent to send their child to Independence High School. It is a large campus immersed with diversity and an educational experience. Parents that are worried about the "drug and gang" scene need not to worry. I've been at this school for four years and I am alive, healthy, and drug/gang free. My parents taught me well and that's what I tell every parent that is hesitant about I.H.S.. My opinion? Parents that are confident that they have raised their children with strong morals and ethics need NOT to worry about the "bad apples" affecting their child. And honestly, there are more "good apples" that will affect your child than there are bad ones.

I wouldn't recommend any parent to send their child to Independence high school. The faculty lacks respectable experience essential for guaranteeing the students the full expanse of the education they need to succeed. The school is unsanitary and in need of mandatory repairs. One message: don't go there.

PROS: none
CONS: moldy, dirty, gangs, drugs, bad education

Alright school, alright students. It's a little bit old and dirty, but it's acceptional, in my opinion. Not much problem with gang / smoke, but of course, those problems are still exist in the school.

The biggest public high school in San Jose. With over 20 different electives to choose from, who wouldn't go here? Although, not very clean, this high school is the place to be.
