This is the place! After a lot of injections and xrays at other facilities I still had a lame horse. Dr. Cannon found the problem with nerve blocks, treated the right place and I'm back in the saddle again. Cowboy Bob

I will never forget the kindness and compassion that I was shown by San Luis Rey Equine Hospital??s doctors and staff when I brought my mare in for fluid therapy during a colic episode. The attentive and alert support staff cheerfully greeted me upon arrival while Dr. Valdez and other interning doctors quickly and calmly tended to my mare. Within moments of our arrival, my mare was placed in stall and on fluids. I was very impressed by the professional courtesy of the entire staff, and the excellent quality of care both I and my mare received throughout her stay. I felt completely at ease leaving my mare in the care of the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital??s veterinarians overnight and when I called to check in on my horse, the staff cheerfully answered all of my questions and tended to my concerns. After a couple of days my mare was released from the hospital and I was able to take her home. Throughout the week following my mare??s discharge, I called several times with a variety of questions regarding her care and the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital staff never ceased to amaze me with their kind words and their willingness to help. I would recommend San Luis Rey Equine Hospital to anyone who expects nothing but the best for their horse.

San Luis Rey Equine Hospital is wonderful. They also have a great ambulatory veterinarian that comes out to the ranch. Dr. Ken Feigner came out to look at a few of my horses. I was very impressed by his vast knowledge, and patience. He explained evertything to me in such an understandable manner. I felt he was very sincere, and compassionate about the care of my horse. I am very pleased with the services offered by this hospital. It is so nice to have such a great facility with great vets close by that will come to my place and take care of my horses.

Recently my horse had an episode of colic in the middle of the night. My horse was down in the trailer when we arrived. The veterinarians and staff had my horse in surgery in what seemed like a few minutes after we arrived. My horse made it through surgery and was in a stall and letting everyone in the barn know that he was feeling better within 2 hours. Through his entire stay the staff provided excellent care to both my horse and myself. I was kept informed each day of his progress and they even sent me pictures so I could see him each day. My horse recovered without any problem and is doing great! San Luis Rey Equine Hospital is the only facility I will use for my horses care.

My horse came in to San Luis Rey on death's door, in violent convulsions from pain in his belly. He was in surgery within 7 minutes of arrival, where they found a colon that was twisted 360 degrees. Dr. Valdez and team removed almost all of the large colon. My horse did not get infection, significant diarrhea, or any serious complications. I attribute his amazing recovery to the impeccable surgery conditions and constant monitoring and adjustments of the incredible team at San Luis Rey. In addition, I called day and night every four hours for the first week and was always treated with incredible empathy and patience for my many questions and fears. If your horse is at this equine hospital, all of you will get the best care imaginable.

Took my horse there several years ago. He came in with a high fever that we were unable to break. He had a very nice stall and the doctors were constantly checking on him. The nurses we very caring and attentive. My only problem is that my horse was there for a week and they were unable to diagnose the problem. They checked everything from a cold to having a specialist come in to see if his organs were for some reason stuck together since he was a young horse. We left there on very expensive medications and still no answers and a bill of around 3000 dollars. When we got home our normal vet came out a week later when he got back into town. He asked if anyone had checked his teeth? I thought they checked every square inch of his body but I guess they didn't check the teeth because he found an infected tooth! Pulled it, but him on penicillin for a week and he was all better. I think he got good care at SLR but a little disappointed that they couldn't find a rotten tooth!

My horse had a very unusual problem, and while the vets at San Luis Rey were not able to diagnose and treat the problem, my expoerience here was a good one. They are caring and work efficiently. I would recommend this clinic.

My mare was admitted to SLR Hopsital about 2 weeks ago and received the best care I could have ever imagined. The team of vets are always on top of things. The surgeon who performed the colic surgery on my mare was communicative and attentive. Dr. Valdez called me daily to update me on my horse's progression. I really didn't think my horse was going to make it, and I have to attribute her amazing turnaround to the wonderful and compassionate team at SLR.

Dr. Barry Grant is the leading authority on diagnosis and treatment of wobbler syndrome. He performed the spinal fusion surgery on my horse to release compresion in the horse's spinal cord which causes "Wobbler's Syndrome". Grant in the 1980s helped perfect this technique, which was based on work done by human surgeon.
Imaging specialist Norm Rantanen, DVM, Dipl. ACVR is a guru, and also works out of San Luis Rey. He is world renowned for his expertise in veterinary diagnostic ultrasound.
These vets are the best.

If SLREH makes a medical error, do not expect them to admit it or respond to you in any way. Be prepared to take them to court. In 2007, SLREH performed endoscopic surgery on my two-year old horse to remove an undescended testicle. Dr. Joseph Cannon advised me the surgery was successful. After two years of difficulties, testing confirmed the presence of functional testicular tissue with hormone levels almost as high as that of a stallion. His undescended testicle had clearly not been removed. SLREH and Dr. Cannon have failed to respond to inquiries about this problem in any fashion. Unfortunately the horse pays the price. I am planning to take the case to small claims court.
