THEY HAVE VEGAN BANANA BREAD!!!

:)

This place is a real catch for anyone who is intouch with what they eat. The food is fresh and most of it is organic. They use local produce and home make EVERYTHING. I feel like I am at my grandmas house eating brownies and drinking tea when I go there, except theres a lot more cool people there than at my grandmas house. ;) great place to strike up a conversation with some interesting folks and regulars!

North Light gives me the warm and fuzzies all over. Northlight is a wonderful place to take some time out of your day to just be. I would suggest trying it out, and getting the turkey melt, or for vegans, the vegandilla. They make all of their food and pastries there, and everything is delicious! great esspresso and gifts to shop around for, they are edgy and funny choices to buy for all your wierd family members. North Light is indeed a one stop shop!

After reading through some of the negative reviews below, I felt the need to set the North Light record straight. North Light is family owned, community focused, local, organic, amazing yumminess!! I have been a student at SSU for five years and I have been going to Northlight for all of those years. Need something to do in Rohnert Park? Go to this cafe!! buy a mochaccino and READ something. There is no better atmosphere in the cotati area to escape from the daily grind. I really can't believe all the negative feedback, and can only assume those were random isolated occurances because in five years, I nor any one I know has had a bad time there. The staff is in love with the food drinks and gifts as much as the people who walk in and its a joy to talk to them about the different and interesting drinks they can master. My favorite ? Try a beer on tap :)
Northlight is amazing. See for yourself

North Light Bookstore and Cafe is tucked into small town Cotati/Rohnert Park. Good food, GREAT breakfast, yummy lunches, THE BEST coffee in town, nice staff, great ambiance, interesting murchandise to say the least. Northlight is a one stop shop to caffinate your mind and fill your belly, pick up a book and any quirky gifts, and be on your way. Rohenrt park doesnt have much, but right next to olivers market, Northlight is the jem to stop into during your busy day. take some time to breath, and enjoy the coffee!!! they are also the independant bookstore competing with barnes and knoble on campus bookstore, the owner is totally pro-local and organic so if you are too - this is the place for you! I had an amazing time and plan on going back very very soon.

I went to North Light Bookstore to purchase books for SSU classes. What I find odd is I have to purchase my books there? I was told they would be on sale 1 week prior to classes starting, nothing like cutting it close and what if I wanted to buy my books on the internet; one week is hardly time enough to do that so I am FORCED to purchase my books there. Why? Are the teachers getting a cut of the sales or what? My husband and I were treated so rudely I would prefer not to patronize their business, EVER! I was told by the rude woman that I could not purchase the books until one week prior to classes starting because the teachers might change their minds on the books they use!? How ludicrous is that? I sense a conspiracy here somewhere.

The sense of feeling welcome and not somehow on trial has definitely improved with the new management. I trust the food at Northlight to be high quality, organic and usually delicious for breakfast and lunch. I don't understand the intensity of the complaints, though once in a while I'm disappointed. The food is better than East West Cafe to me because it's so fresh. I eat there a lot.

Notice that the bad reviews are happening after the new owner came in. Carolina and Barbara were awesome back in the day. It seems like the new owner just wanted to reap the benefits of their hard work. I have seen her in there and she said not a peep, not a word. She needs to be friendly! If it was my store I would be greeting everyone who walked in that store and then showering them with hospitality. Also, she was a blundering idiot at the register. Poor management leads to a poor establishment. Sorry North Light you have lost your touch.

As a student of SSU, I must go there to purchase textbooks. I appreciate that some professors do not want to order books through the corporate bookstore on campus and instead, want to support small businesses. I, however, found that the customer service was so poor that I really do not want to go back. I like the atmosphere and the eclectic book selection but , again, I was so turned off by the unprofessional sales clerks that I will not shop or eat there unless I absolutely am forced to buy textbooks there.

Bad, just bad! You can get better food and coffee at Olivers for less money. The way they treat people there is deplorable. Karma will bite you in the butt someday!

These people are very rude and I had an unpleasant dining experience there. The decor is dusty, mismatched and old. It may have been cool once, the mood there now is blank. The good chefs are gone and it seems like a hire and fire carousel for the Baristas. I want to have a nice place to drink coffee with a friend where the employees are at least familiar. This place needs a lot of work on moral and management. I only go there now to avoid going to Starbucks but after my recent bad dining experience and I would recommend to avoid eating there.

I will agree the food and service in this place is inconsistent. I don't know if I have ever seen a dishwasher deliver food to a table after she was cleaning the bathroom like the other review I read. I have NEVER received personal service from the chef here either and I have been there a few times over the years. The dishwasher serves the food, at least every time I have been there, which does raise flags for me and prompts the sanitation question. Also, there are many better places to spend 10 dollars on a lunch entree. Breakfast is mayhem there on weekends, they are totally understaffed and under equipped and I would avoid it, unless you like dealing with excuses like the one we received from the girl behind the counter. After waiting 20 or 30 minutes for our food we inquired and the excuse we got was, "I am sorry I'll check" and then, "We only have four burners and soup is on two of them." There may be only 10 people eating in the place at the time.

I never knew that a simple breakfast dish could be so delicious, until of course, I ate at North Light Cafe. The head chef personally came out to recommend the Hole-in-One with tomatoes and cheese. He prepared the order, added fresh, juicy, hand-cut, heart-shaped strawberries and apples, and bought the plate to me personally; as well as everyone else. He then proceeded to find time to remove himself from the kitchen to make sure all his dinners were well. The food was excellent!
Its so refreshing to see a man that puts so much love, effort and raw culinary talent into his work. The meal was great, and made better by the amount of pride put forth in good service. A truly pleasant dining environment

Also, the Morning Glory Chai is wonderful. It??s a bit spicier and has a fuller taste than your average corner Starbucks. It??s also always consistent in taste. I definitely recommend it.

10 gold stars to taste, atmosphere, friendly service and staff, and a top-notch chef.

It happened after I ate a salad with tahini dressing. I have eaten here often over the years. The old chefs are gone and I don't think the new people know what they are doing. I am not going to report the illness, I am just going to give the place a bad review and tell my family and friends NOT to eat there, and why!

Bogus Bogus Bogus. Did I say Bogus? Oh, I forgot to mention, BOGUS! I have had small salads and sandwiches before. I paid for a mushroom sandwich and got a moldy piece of crap on warm/stale bread. I got up and left.

My soup was served tepid and my sandwich was partially blackened from a fire/smoke. This place was ok before. Lately it is less than worthy of my time and money. When I asked the waitress about the sandwich she didn't speak English. Its also kind of loud for a bookstore and I couldn't get much reading done with all the noise.

If you love reading but haven't found anybody to make decent book recommendations, you haven't been to North Light Books & Cafe, where Barbara, Carolina, and the rest of the staff have hand-picked a selection of books for adults and kids and will happily tell you all about them. Opinionated? Yes! Passionate about books? Yes! The funniest gals you'll ever meet? YES! Plus the organic, locally grown food in the cafe showed me how good truly nourishing food can taste. This fiercely independent store is a destination and a great place to while away a few hours in a community of like-minded people. It's a small place but they also host music, author readings, and open mics throughout the week. Obviously, I'm a fan!

Organic salads, home baked treats and delicious brunch. Locally owned, community focused bookstore. Fun open mic nights. Free wifi. Best organic latte's around. Pleasant outdoor seating in a secret enclosed garden space. Fun and quirky collection of books and in house reviews of books. Only complaint is that lighting is too low for reading.

PROS: Free WiFi, HomeBakedGoodies, Organic Coffee, Great Folks
CONS: Low light not conducive to reading

Unique aptly describes this downhome, bookstore/cafe on bustling East Cotati Avenue. Several stacks of books for Sonoma State University classes help keep the establishment afloat. The other books and a small assortment of gift items are carefully chosen, and the recommendations of staff are spot on. Also, if they don't have a book you want in stock, they'll order it lickety split. The cafe is friendly. The food is good to excellent, especially when it's paired with an evening's entertainment. For example, a couple of weeks ago I was at a Latin American poetry and music performance. And the delicious meal of subtly spiced chicken, beans and rice was prepared by the featured poet himself. The evening was magical. Oh, and desert was fresh strawberries in creamall for a fixed price of $20.

Cotati doesn't have much, but it does have character. North light books adds a lot to this character. They have a small but very good selection of books as well as a small cafe that serves coffee and snacks.

For university students, some teachers like to have the books ordered from this bookstore so as the semester starts, don't be alarmed if it looks more like a college bookstore than a quaint Cotati store.

Live entertainment, group meetings, community and political discussions... way more than a bookstore.

The owners, Carolina and Barbara, will order any books you want for very little markup. They always have a great variety and selection in stock. The focus is very political and artistic. Actually the great atmosphere and edginess give it a San Francisco feel.

If you are hungry or thirsty they make all organic gourmet and delicious food (deli, baked goods, and fresh made specials) and brew some amazing coffee and espresso drinks.

Get ahold of their calendar of events - and come to see guest artists, writers, poets, musicians, and more.

The patrons vary from college students to elderly couples to punks to preps to queers to macho men. There is something about this place that brings many types of people and a plethora of regulars. Support this amazing place if you are in the area.
