I was used to using Apartment Guide when I lived in Dallas, and I will have to say that I'm disappointed it the quality of it out here. But, it seems like there are really any good sources for apartment searching in SoCal.
... especially for new home-finders. My roommates and I visited this place on occassion, where they were more than happy to help locate and call places that fit out specific needs. While they probably can't secure you a home the same day, they certainly try and open up a million doors along the way. Very helpful, highly recommended.
I've rented several places through apartment guide. It's very convenient, resourceful and easy to use. It list most the apartments in Orange County and LA area apartments and condos. The best this about it is free and available anywhere at grocery stores.
PROS: Free and user friendly
CONS: only large rental properties and most of them is expensive
