My parents grew up in the Marina and they have been linked to here for years. You walk in the front door and you just get enveloped in the smell of the Italian food waiting inside. They have the best deli meats and cheeses and be sure to

I haven't found a sandwich that comes very close to Papa Napoli's. I was very worried after "Papa" died that they wouldn't reopen. I was so happy that they did. I've been going here for lots of years. The turkey is still my favorite, with the hot roast beef being a close second. Don't forget the homeade potato salad!
I do miss Papa though, he always knew my name.

...and that may even include my Grandma's kitchen. I first ate here when my first teeth started coming in. I grew up in Santa Maria but moved away in 1992.
Now I am back in California (Pasadena). I have had friends bring me some "Papa Nap's", and every bite of every sandwich was the peak of perfection. I don't know if it's the bread, the dressing, or the way the tomatos are cut so thin you can see through them that makes Papa Nap's so good, but I am sure that the sandwiches are greater than the sum of the ingredients. My mom made a special trip to Santa Maria today and brought me 4 sandwiches...I wish I hadn't eaten them so fast, because now I want some more, even though I am so full I can hardly walk.
Ok, so maybe I'm gushing a little bit, but having eaten at many deli's around the world, I've searched far and wide for that sandwich that can "beat" something from Papa Nap's, and folks it just isn't out there. This place truly is deserving of 5 stars and the "World Class" title.
Give them a try, open the door, walk in, and stuff yourself full of true family-owned-and-operated goodness.
I guess I could summarize this entire diatribe by simply saying:
"I love Papa Nap's" ... and so will you.

The Patriach of the Napoli family died in 2006, so I don't know if the restaurant is still holding up. My comments date from early 2006.

Papa Napoli's is tucked away in a strip mall by the Target Store. It has many of the elements of a genuine Italian Deli. The people are nice, the food is fresh, the ambience is homey, and the prices are reasonable. There is usually a good crowd at lunch.

But the food can be dry, the service is spotty, and the food (though fresh) is only average.

Since Santa Maria doesn't have many good places to eat, Papa Napoli's still deserves a look.

I don't know how this guy does it or even where he gets his meat, but the pastrami subs are killer! Just perfect in every way.
