What an incredible place to visit. Unbelievable variety of gardens -- desert, subtropical, jungle, palm, rose, Chinese, Japanese, etc. The gardens are very well tended. The Library building contains rare books and manuscripts -- including a Gutenberg Bible on vellum. Wow. Their art collections include British, French, and American works. Don't overlook this place.

Huntington Library is an amazing place that needs to be seen at least once for everyone who lives in Southern California. The gardens are beautiful, the art is amazing and it only requires a small donation to see it all.

I was there a few days ago it was awesome. A great place to take pictures and learn about plants. If you're hungry i suggest the tea room. This place is good for field trips also. I really enjoyed learning and seeing the many different types of plants!

Visited the beautiful Huntington Library, Art Collection and Botanical garden at San Marino, CA on May 27, 2007. There are different type of Gardens like Chinese garden, Japanese garden, French garden, Desert garden, Children's garden, Rose garden, Desert garden, Herb garden and lots more. There was also a free Tour of the garden. The most I liked in this place is the Japanese garden, Bonsai garden and the Rose garden. The Chinese garden is still under construction and is expected to open up for public around mid 2008. I have uploaded some pictures of this place in my blog.

There is so much to see and enjoy here... we just scratched the surface with the kids garden play area and the rose garden and the Bog/Swamp area - which was a favorite for my 6 year old - with Venus fly traps galore - which you could even touch and watch as they closed on your little stick... everyone was so nice and full of information here - we went for the day and ended up buying a year long membership - we've been back many times and there is still so much to see. They have great events happening all the time for the kids...

As a person who collects old stuff, and has a small Japanese style garden - let me tell you: The Japanese place screams: The BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN. (With the possible exceptions of the Japanese Garden in Golden Gate Park SF.)

Hiking the gardens makes you feel like you've been to at least 3 different worlds. The Art Museums and the Collections in the Library are world class. And the story of H. R. Huntington and the effect his electric railroad had on the development of LA is the reason it exists. Its nice to know that in those days, Billionaires had enough class to leave a legacy for future generations.

No phony modernistic landscape architecture here. Just the classics. This is a worthy visit for out-of-towners. And if you live in LA - buy the season pass - its worth it if you come back at least one time.

Dont miss the Gutenberg Bible and drafts of the Bill of Rights in the Library!

This is a terrific spot for a date -- beautiful peaceful gardens, a nice museum and library, and a nice brunch. It seems like there's a bubble around the spot protecting from the hustle of LA.

Huntington Gardens is one of my very favorite places to visit. The gardens are absolutely gorgeous. What's also nice about the Huntington is that they seem to be constantly improving their grounds. For instance, they recently added a new children's garden, which is very cute and my 2 year old daughter absolutely loves. The museums and library are also worth visiting.

The Huntington Library and Gardens in Pasadena is an absolute treasure. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and pristine. I also enjoy the relaxing ponds and streams of the Japanese Koi fish.

This is a place that if you live in the area, you should visit at least once. You may find something you enjoy that you thought you might not have been interested in. This place is very kid friendly as well.

If you only visit the Huntington to see the "Blue Boy," you will miss so much of its diversified and carefully selected collections. While there is a lot of classic European art to see, the botanical gardens - especially less traveled ones featuring Australian and other exotic plants - are some of the Pasadena area's best kept secrets. The gift shop here is limited and can't convey the beauty of the gardens, so buy a pass and keep returning to fully soak in the surroundings.

I'm not a big fan of most of the art collection (though the arts and crafts house is well worth checking out), but the grounds are a great place to walk around and find a quiet place to read a book and get (sort of) away from the hustle of Los Angeles.

The rose garden is spectacular. The Japanese garden is also something in particular to take a look at, but during the weekend it is usually very crowded.

Admission is free on the first Thursday of the month.

PROS: Beautiful grounds
CONS: Expensive

The gardens are so amazing, and so relaxing. I think the cost to get into the museums and gardens is about $15 per person. But you can buy a yearly membership for $100 (thats for a family) and it is a tax writeoff. We go as much as possible, as there are always new exhibits opening. There are exquisite gardens and amazing artwork! The people who work there are kind and considerate. A truly joyfull experience~

Personally I think there is too much to see in just a day, especially if you have kids, but the free days (first Thursday of the month) are a great way to see it without the cost. Come early or you won't find parking and its impossably crowded in the summer. The children's garden is amazing, prepare to let your kids get very wet. This is an amazing place, I just wish their membership prices were more comprable to the Zoo's.

Set aside a good morning or afternoon to fully explore the Huntington Library and Gardens. There is so much to see, from the art collection, to the library, to the extensive, beautiful gardens. The gardens are themed; don't miss the Rose Garden! The paintings Blue Boy and Pinkie are two of my favorites in the art gallery. There is a cafe and a tea room where you can get something to eat. The Huntington is well worth the price of admission!

It is so beautiful here it can be almost heart-stopping. Check out the Japanese gardens with the amazing bridges and huge cherry blossom trees (they bloom in spring-- a flurry of white and pink blossoms) or examine the infamous Blue Boy painting and the x-rays of it that show the evolution of the painting in the artist's mind. Pinky is here, too-- another Sir Thomas Gainsborough painting. The homes are lovely to wander through-- vast and spacious and airy. The gift shop has tasteful souvenirs to remember your day by. Truly a must see!

This is a place that you simply must see. The gardens are stunning -- and cover a very large area. There is so much to see that you will be in awe. The museums often carry special exhibits that you would likely not see elsewhere. The grouds are beautiful, the tea room lovely. Nothing about this place is not spectacular. Admission more than reasonable.

This place is absolutely gorgeous. Old books, beautiful plants, tea house, great staff and tours, huge and beautiful. It is a little pricey to go, and a bit hard to find (it is deep in a highly classy residential area) but there are signs to point you the way and they are very happy to have you come to visit!

Though the art collection for the most part wasn't really my cup of tea, there are many other perks to this place. First off, it is such a visual paradise. Even if you were to sit on one of the expansive lawns all day, watching people watercolor, I'd say it was a day well spent. The gardens were incredible and there was such a variety. Be sure to check out the bonsai garden- my personal fave. Also, they have a traveling exhibit. At the time I went, the temporary exhibit was the highlight of my trip.

Be sure and grab your student ID if you have one, it isn't cheap, but well worth it.

If you have never been here SHAME ON YOU! THis place is not just a library--some people haveno idea that there is even a library here. Just the gardens alone can keep you enthused for hours and hours. I'm not sure if you can have picnics here, but I intend to find out and if you can have one, it would be the perfect romantic place.

If you've never been to the Huntington Botanical Gardens you should be ashamed of yourself. It's absolutely amazing, with more than 10 different gardens on its premises. Personal favourites are the Shakespeare Garden and Australian Garden. Don't forget to stop at the Rose Garden Tea Room for high tea while you're there. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time, it's always packed!

Everytime I go, I feel like I enter an area of euphoria. The Huntington LIbrary is magical. The Bookstore is worth checking out. The gardens and grounds are spectacular. Once I walk into the library itself, I feel in awe. If you have not been before, you must go now!

look, it's not that the huntington isn't *worth* FIFTEEN BUCKS per adult. but $15 is truly prohibitive for a lot of us -- and if you have kids older than 5, you have to pay another $10 per.

if you're lucky enough to live nearby, though, the membership is worth it. it's $100 and it gets you and another adult, plus your under-18 kids or grandkids, admission for a year. if you're a family of four and you think you'd visit even twice in a year, that's a membership right there -- and you get 10% discounts in the library's bookstore and at smith & hawken garden store in pasadena.

please understand, it's not that i think the huntington runs itself. i know it needs the money (or at least i presume it does). it's just that such a precious resource ought to be more accessible financially. at the *very* least, it ought to be a "suggested donation," so that people of limited means could still come in even if they didn't have the full amount. (maybe it is a suggested donation; i didn't ask if they really turn away sticker-shocked visitors. but if it is, then it ought to be posted more prominently.)

I loved my visit to the Huntington! The grounds are so beautiful and so well kept, it's like going on vacation in the middle of Los Angeles. I love that they have different themed gardens too, desert, the rose garden, the oriental garden - it's worth it just to walk around all day. Then plus the art collection is amazing!! I say, grab a book and pack your lunch, bring a big blanket and make a day of it. Parking is super easy.

My first visit to the library was to hear a poet read, then it was to do research. So, between those two extremes, I've had the opportunity to enjoy one of Southern California's best locations for art, history, and nature.

Of every attraction in Los Angeles and Orange County, The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens is by far my very favorite place to visit, read and take folks from out of town to visit. Without giving away the magic of the Gardens, I can tell you that even if you only have a few hours and visit only two or three of their gardens you will not be disappointed. Having just added a new place to house more art, The Virginia Steele Scott Gallery of American Art donated a number of pieces to the already refined collection. You can find a photo and description of each peice here: http://emuseum.huntington.org/code/emuseum.asp. They house the famous Gainsborough's Blue Boy and Lawrence's Pinkie. Honestly, I should simply purchase a membership as I tend to visit many, many times a year when friends are in out of town as well as impromtu visits when I'm looking for a place to clear my head.
Spring and Summer are a wonderful time to go, at the peak of the Garden's beauty. This is not to take away from the majestic sight of the gardens in and of themselves - they are certainly a sight to behold. The best time to go is Sunday morning, if you have one to spare. There are less people and this works well if you'd like to get a table in the Tea Room or take your time perusing the Galleries. They recently added a children's area, although I think the Gardens were already well suited for little ones before. It is appropriately named: Children's Garden. There are classes and arts and crafts, as well.
Walking around the grounds is a source of endless delight for me and I often wander around taking in the sights, smelling the scented air and taking black and white photos of the giant trees or trying to get a still of a bird or lizard or giant gold fish.
Wear comfortable shoes and light fabrics. I wear tennis shoes and a pair of my more comfortable and light slacks (as opposed to jeans or shorts) and a polo or something short sleeved. Also, stash a small water

PROS: Great excersise! With the back drop of the beautiful gardens, you could walk for hours and feel that not a lot of time has passed.
CONS: No Cons!

This park is definitely worth an all day visit. This is probably the nicest park in all of LA. It consists of various themes like a Japanese garden, cactus garden, tropical garden, etc. Some parts of the park have very mature trees which are so rare in LA. It's not cheap to get in but worth it.

The Huntington has 3 art galleries, botanical gardens, a lovely Tea Room, a Japanese garden and so much more. This has always been a favorite place of mine to take our kids as they were growing up. They learned to love museums here. The gardens are justbreath-taking, my favorite being the Japanese garden and the bridges there. It is a very tranquil spot. A real must see.

The Huntington Library is one of those fantastic places enjoyed extensively by natives and tourists alike. There truly is "something for everyone" at this hidden L.A. treasure, and is great for the whole family.

The Library is perhaps best known fora few master paintings, such as "Blue Boy". Even those of us less versed in art are taken aback b the detail and expression in such creations. Really take your time here, and try not to go when a school may be visiting- you'll want an unobstructed view of these pieces.

The Library also features very nice collections of furniture and housewears pieced together to recreate entire rooms from historic eras.

My favorite display has been the very old books such as the Gutenburg Bible and original books penned by Chaucer and cohorts. The gold lettering and illustrations are marvelous.

Go on a nice day and give yourself plenty of time to stroll through all of the gardens. On display are mini-ecosystems featuring plants from the desert, the rainf

Spectacular. You'll have to get a membership, or come with a friend who has one, but it's well worth it because you'll want to visit many times. Impressive collections and gardens, which you can stroll about. This is one of the most beautiful spots in LA, along with the Getty Center. And make an appointment for the tea room while you're at it.

This place is absolutely amazing! 100's of acres of beautiful gardens and the most breath taking Library you could imagine. Art Galleries, Archetecture and much more, this place is difinetely a dont miss attraction of Pasadena!

The Huntington botanical gardens, library, and art gallery are truly a unique destination in the LA area. Located in San Marino (just south of Pasadena) the gardens themselves are a wonderful place to go to relax and enjoy an incredible variety of plants in the many types of gardens like the cactus garden or the Japanese garden. The library has many rare books, and the art gallery houses the famous Blue Boy. The tea room has a unique set of English treats but it does require a reservation. The Cafe next to it does not and is open duing business hours. Great place to take out of town visitors.

The Huntington Library is nothing short of amazing. The botanical gardens make for a wonderful walk, and you'll see all sorts of plants that you wouldn't find anywhere else. Their rose garden is particularly gorgeous. They have a museum on-site with paintings and sculptures from over 200 years ago, which is great if you're an art fan (personally, I can see an entire museum in about 5 minutes).

The Gardens are definitely the splendor of Huntington. It's a great place to take a date!

This place is absolutely amazing. This is definitely a "don't miss" item if you come to Pasadena. It has around 200 acres of beautiful gardens - desert, Australian, Chinese, Japanese, Rose, Herb, Shakespearean, Palm, etc. And the library is absolutely phenominal. The art galleries don't really do it for me, but I love the houses and architecture. It's not too expensive to get in, and they have discounted rates for children, senior citizens, and students. I have a year-round membership, and it's worth it every time I visit.

I've never been in the library, but one can spend weeks exploring the extensive gardens. It is a very nice place to bring a date - be sure to bring a camera as well.

The Huntington Library is so beautiful. There are different gardens like the Japanese Garden, the cactus garden. They just opened a children's garden last summer. FYI Be prepared for your kids to get wet. There's also the tea house and the cafeteria to eat at. There's something for everybody. We went to the Easter egg hunt there last year. It was a lot of fun.

I grew up going to the Huntington Library with my family. I still love visiting each year. They have interesting classes and exhibits if you are looking to broaden your knowledge. Although I have never been I have heard great things from numerous people about the Cafe and Rose Garden Tea room. www.huntington.org
