I lived in Paris for almost 3 years, so I was hoping to find a great French restaurant in downtown Pleasanton. Unfortunately, this was a disappointing experience.

The Venison Grand Veneur had gristle and was severely overpriced at $34.85 including potatoes and veggies. The Seafood Risotto was a bit salty and a overcooked.

The original owners were French (the wife served while the husband cooked) and we heard it was spectacular back then...but they have since sold it and now the server is Ukrainian and the cook is Mexican...not quite the authentic French restaurant experience I was hoping for!

***NOTE: This restaurant is under new ownership; it is no longer owned and operated by Claude & Dominique.***

We were greeted, seated and served by Irina, a lady from the Ukraine. Peeking through the small window to the kitchen while waiting to be seated, we saw a Mexican chef. I lived in Paris for almost 3 years, so I had high hopes in discovering a French restaurant I liked right in downtown Pleasanton.

DH ordered the Venison Grand Veneur plus a side of potatoes and veggies. I ordered a new entree on their menu, the Seafood Risotto which was supposed to come with garlic bread.

Venison: it was "okay" quality and one of the petite medallions had a chewy inedible piece. Potatoes were delicious and so were the veggies.

Risotto: the shrimp and scallops were disappointingly overcooked. When I asked if my garlic bread was coming, Irina said it didn't come with it but she would bring me some if I wanted. I said I thought the menu included garlic bread and she checked the menu and apologized, saying it was a new dish and the chef forgot. She brought two huge slices of garlic bread and DH was happy that I gave him one! :)

If you're looking for an authentic French restaurant, I wouldn't come here. If you're looking for an overpriced wannabe-French restaurant, perhaps C&D Bistro might live up to your expectations...but don't expect an intimate dining experience, as there was a party of four dining across the room while we were there and it sounded like we were all at the same table.

Pros: Apparently this USED to be a great bistro until it was sold.

Cons: Overpriced for food with much higher expectations...too bad.

This is a fine restaurant, Claude & Dominique Bistro. I wish them the best of luck toward their restaurant. I will come to the restaurant again. I live in New York. I travel the world looking at fine restaurants and never before have I gone to the same restaurant twice. I will come again June, 13, 2008. If it is not open I will not recommend this to any other users.

wow this was a great place for a romantic dinner. The food is unbelivable, the service was pretty good. The place itself looks like a little French house. So back to the food, they have all the French traditional dishes from escargo, to the Rossini( fillet mingion with some sweet trouffle sauce, and for desseret a suffle was absolutely delicious. What I also liked that you can make reservations online.
Claude and Dominiques is a fun little French place

The service here is fantastic, I can say that, but the food leaves a LOT to be desired and is far too pricey for the quality. The food is covered in VERY heavy sauces and the markup on the wine is 3x's the average store price (ex. - $30 for a bottle of Rancho Zabaco). Prices are a big issue considering you could eat at some of the finest restaurants in the Bay Area (and country for that matter) for the same or less $$ and get much better quality food. We paid $90 per person for a meal that was just average.

Since I moved to Pleasanton I have been sampling the local restaurants and I've had some very good experiences but no great ones. That changed last night when I visited Claude and Dominique Bistro. The restaurant is just off of Main St. which gives it a feeling of being hidden away while still being accessible. The place has the feeling of a small country farm house that has been turned into a restaurant. The walls are adorned with some paintings that look like they were painted in the 1800s. The room is warmly lit. You start to forget that you are not in France. The food is delicious. I had the terrine du jour which was an excellent starter and then had a grilled halibut in a white wine sauce. Everything was prepared superbly and the service was great. I can't wait to go back.

PROS: Fantastic French Food

Claude and Dominique's was a great discovery. The food is tasty, the ambiance is cozy and romantic, and the service is great!

Don't pass on the escargot, and you must have their creme brulee for dessert.

Claude and Domenique is one of the best restaurants in Pleasanton. The setting and service would make it worthwhile alone. Be sure to sit at one of Domenique's tables. She makes you feel like an old friend on your first visit.

Start with an appertiff and don't miss the escargot.
Every dish is a hit, and dessert is worth every calorie.
