I live in Boston and visited Kamalaspa in February during a vacation. I was feeling really stressed out about going - was worried about getting a high quality cut & color and also about feeling welcome/relaxed in the environment. Lisa did my color first and I could not have been more pleased. I had serious gray roots to cover and also wanted highlights. She really listened to my requests and asked questions to make sure we were in synch. She took a great deal of time and care with my highlights. I was thrilled that she took so much time and was so dedicated to the end result. She was also very kind and welcoming and I felt like my experience was genuinely important to her. Both the base color and the highlights were the best I've ever had. I have never had so many compliments, it could not have been a better experience. I then moved on to my cut with Cary and he was also a delight. He made me feel very comfortable and also took a great deal of time and care to make sure he understood what I wanted. I have never experience a cut with such attention to detail. He has a very warm and caring manner and he made me feel very comfortable. He is truly an artist but didn't make me feel like I was just an art project. If I could afford it, I would fly back to SF to see Cary and Lisa every time. I'll have to settle for annual vacation visits. I would strongly recommend them to anyone coming in from out of town who wants a special look to commemorate their trip and also wants to be treated like visiting royalty. Thank you Lisa and Cary.

Although this is some place you think only your girlfriend/wife should go to--think again. Its quiet, soothing, covenient--right on Union square-- and for a great haircut with no fuss or overdoing it--see Cary Carter--professional, curteous, attentive, and efficient. Everything you need--nothing you dont want.

I managed to save money for the whole body experience, massage, spa, facial, it was awesome and I will repeat this experience, for sure. It was a little on the expensive side, but luckily, everybody chipped in.

Had color by Lisa - not good at all. I wanted to go blond (I was brown) and now...well, I think tiger stripes/bad barbie doll hair is probably the best description. It took three hours, I let her know I was not happy. She finally said I could have the look I wanted (I had three photos) but it would take 3-4 more highlight sessions. Good lord - I said I wish she would have told me that, as I would have made another decision.

She did one "phase" and blew it dry, my old stylist Edgardo walked by - look at it and asked if she had seen the photos of what I wanted. Enough said!

I am going to call them tomorrow and see if there is another colorist that can do something.

update:
Well I called and called and called --- 8 messages. The manager called me back 3 weeks after my appointment. She was amazingly rude.

another update:
I wrote the owners (Chris & Amber Marie Bently - local socialites) and have received NO response....

No excuse for this kind of customer abuse. Edgardo might give great hair - but I am giving my business to a salon that wants it/deserves it.

If you want a few hours of pure bliss, to be pampered beyond words, to feel lke a queen and to escape the craziness of the city, Kalamaspa is the place to be so indulged. From the minute I got off the elevator, I was transported to another world. The staff, including the receptionists, are friendly, thoughtful and indulgent. I felt like everyone was there just to please me. Heaven on earth! The spa is quiet, other-worldly and almost ethereal. They took care of my every whim, before I could even think of asking. Arty D'Angleo is the BEST facialist ever. I followed him to SF from LA and he is worth the plane ride. He not only gives the most wonderful facials, but just being around him is relaxing and calming. His kind soul and beautiful smile make the facial even more wonderful. The spa, especially Arty, is worth every penny and more.

I recently was in SF for business and decided to try out Kamalspa for a haircut on a walk-in basis. I was with a colleague and we didn't have a lot of time as we were between meetings. The receptionist consulted with stylist Cary Thomas Carter and he graciously agreed to take on the dual challenges represented by our time limitations and my unruly hair. The result? A terrific new look that suits my hair type and lifestyle. Thank you to Cary --You are a kind and consummate professional. Thank you as well to my colleague, Isabel, who surprised me with a pair of Amber's carnelian earrings. Exotic and unique- - just like Kamalspa itself. I will visit again.

I am new to San Francisco and was referred to Cary at Kamala Spa by a friend who has had Cary cut his hair for many years. I couldn't be happier with the haircuts and colorings I've received from Cary the past 6 months.

Cary is a very talented stylist. He pays great attention to detail and gives a very precise cut. My hair is very thin and fine, and difficult to work with, but his haircut always helps give my hair more body and life. He also does a great job coloring my hair. It looks very natural and seems to give my hair more body, too.

I always look forward to my haircut with Cary at Kamal Spa. I usually enjoy a complimentary glass of wine during my visit. The staff and other stylists are all very friendly and attentive to my needs.

This is a great salon and a great stylist. I am delighted to recommend Cary and Kamala Spa to all my friends, or anyone else just looking for a great haircut in a relaxing environment.

I had the most AMAZING massage and shampoo/blow dry at Kamalaspa. I went for the Reiki massage. It was one of the best massages I've ever experienced! It was so healing. Not just for my muscles but for my entire being. I was also able to learn the basics about the practice of Ayurveda from my therapist.

The other thing I really appreciated was the way the staff worked together. After my massage my therapist was waiting for me with a glass of water. She then showed me where to change and where I needed to go to get my hair done. After I changed the front desk person made sure that I knew where I was going and offered me wine or champagne. I decided to try a little champagne during my salon treatment. Absolutely wonderful! My hair was awesome. So soft and straight. I left feeling so beautiful and satisfied. Thank you Kamalspa!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SPA!! From the minute I stepped into this EXOTiC & ELEGANT Spa I was in awe of how "beautiful" the stage had been set for the "Ultimate Spa Experience" . I noticed the gorgeous Indian fabrics draping the ceiling and was mesmerized by the saltwater fish tank in lounge area. Then I was whisked away for the works!! Manicure - pedicure, facial, waxing AND spray tan with outstanding, skilled service people. They also offer "COUPLES MASSAGE" which was how I first experienced KamalaSpa. My husband still talks about how much he enjoyed the experience and demands a monthly "Metro-Sexual" Session every month. Next I plan to schedule hair services, cut, color and styling while looking out onto Union Square and listening to relaxing Indian music. Just what every woman needs - PAMPERING AT IT'S FINEST!! Thank You KamalaSpa - We need you!

Kamalaspa is with out a doubt the best Day Spa I have ever been to, from the moment you enter till the moment you leave you feel completely pampered! The staff are very friendly and knowlegable. I had a first time facial with "Daphne" , first she sends me off to a private "steam" & shower ( which each room has) which put me right into the relax mood I was looking for. Having never had a facial I did not know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised and will add that to my very relaxing massage, everytime I go in!
There should be a sign on the door saying "Beware", very addictive area!
Even if you were were only going in to buy some of the many wonderful products they have, you will feel like you have gone to another country, the place is beautiful!

Sorry I don't mean to be so cheap but please. If I request a menu more than 4 times in a week and never get the info, yeah I'm going to be mad . So to save a little frustration here it is! But citysearch has detected the following inappropriate words: dot com. Your review contains a word that exceeds our limit of 35 characters per word. so got to kamalaspa(dotcom) and in the url add /media/menu.prices.pdf right on the end!

I was hurriedly ushered towards the back & assumed that she was showing me where the robes were. I was taken to the room she would be waxing me in. I wondered where the champagne & relaxation room were, as I had arrived 30m early to indulge in that. She explained the she would be doing half of my Brazilian in hard wax & the other half using strips since clients had expressed to her that the hard wax hurt the least. I was confused because I've never heard of anyone using 2 different types of waxing processes before. She continually put scalding hot wax on me, which would cause her to have to exhale to cool it down on me both of which were uncomfortable to deal w/, over & over again. She switched to the hard wax & she couldn't remove it all. She left it up to me to clean up & handed me some tea tree oil to remove a 2 inch long chunk of wax. I was shocked that not only did I have to suffer through the scalding of my skin repeatedly, but she left most of my hair intact. I went 2 the front desk to locate her to ask her to do it again. Her excuse was that she was use to the hard wax. I explained whatever would get the job done. We went back through the process again, burning wax & her exhaling on my skin. I was still very disappointed, to have such horrible service & then to still come out not only in excruciating pain, but not get the service I requested. By this point I was in such pain & extremely perturbed by the lack of expertise employed at the spa. Then when I got out to the front desk the three front desk ladies did not even know how to use the gift card. Saturday, Sunday, & part of Monday it hurt to urinate, I could not use soap on the skin, putting on undergarments was painful, & I was in pain as a whole no matter what position I was in. My dr. told me to put a salve on it to keep it from getting infected. Now, I have little abrasions on my skin from this. I'll not be frequenting this establishment EVER again and have informed my friends, as well.

I have tried many stylists in SF, and I have to say it is my pleasure to go to KS, it's such a luxury! Not only is the spa amazing and truly stunning, but the services hold up just as wonderfully as the decor. It's not cheap, but as they say, you get what you pay for and then some! I always love, love, love my hair and brows when Ursula does them and the converstaion is always fun. She makes everyone I have seen her work on, look extreemly sultry and beautiful. Hair and brows just go together;-) and she is an expert with both, such a rareity in a stylist! Love this place.

I'm a Spa Connoseur and Kamala rates among the top 5 I've been to internationally. I've been here a few times and I rarely escape with spending less than $500. The last trip cost me over $600 including tips and I spent an additional $100 on products. Although it was a great day I did a lot of soul searching over what else I could've done with $700. And don't forget the $50 I had to drop for parking at Union Square all day. OK enough about the price, let's get to the services.
All services are extremely pricey but only a few are well worth the money.
MASSAGES are heavenly - good value. Skip the steam bath unless you just want a special somewhat romantic extra few minutes with a loved one after the couples massage.
FACIALS - average, I'd recommend that you save money and go elsewhere.
NAIL treatments - average/overpriced. They have a comfortable chaise lounge with nicely appointed pillows which is cool if you want to impress a friend or family member but there was nothing overly special about the service.
SALON services - I've had my hair done here twice and loved it. Ursula is my favorite but Kat is also really good. I haven't had the chance to work with Edgardo yet but eavesdropping on his conversations is always entertaining. ;-) The only disapointment is that there seems to be a huge variation in pricing. Kat did my hair one day and I thought she did a great job and the price was very reasonable. Only $40 for a nice color glaze, wash & dry. I went back for a full day of services and met Ursula who did a fantastic job but I was shocked when I checked out and saw that she charged $80 for the glaze in addition to the $80 for a wash, cut, & dry. I liked Ursula a lot and thought she did a great job but did not undertsand why it cost $160 vs. $40 when the only difference was adding a simple trim and a different stylist. I questioned this and got some stock reply about my long hair but my hair didn't grow that much in 2 months! :-)

My husband got me a Swedish Massage and manicure/pedicure for as a Valentine's Day present. The moment you walk off the elevator you feel as if you have been transported back to the time of the Rajas and Ranis (kings and queens) of India. The staff is exeptional, the surroundings opulent with the maroon and gold cloth covering the ceilings and walls with glimmering chandeliers above you. With all this said, though, my massage was OK. I have had better. My manicurist was a delightful person, but the actual manicure and pedicure end result also only OK. I have to say the ambience is to die for, and the staff warm and friendly, but the actual services may not be worth the price.

How many times can you get the best massage of your life? And then have it happen again and again? It seems to happen with each visit to Kamalaspa.

While the place is certaintly lavishly decorated, does that really matter when your eyes are covered by a heated eye pillow (nice touch)? I swear they put something in that cucumber water that transports you into another world.

I raved so much that my wife decided to check it out for herself and she agreed with me.

Next time im taking some of that cucumber water home with me!!!

I had a great massage therapist but...for $130 for an ayurvedic massage I expect it to 1) start on time and 2) if not on time I expect to get a full 60 minute treatment. I think it ended up being about 50 minutes, music is too loud and it is too expensive. I think this is another Union Square tourist trap and not intended for SF spa coniseurs. I had a gift certificate so didn't feel too bad upon leaving but wouldn't go back. The other odd thing is that the toilet is outside in the hallway and I did feel odd in teh reception area in my robe with other fully clothed waiting for something else.

I'm a seasoned hairdresser and when I want to be a customer and excape, I go to Kamalaspa. The staff is highly qualified and I love the tranquility of the space set above Union Square. I recently booked an appointment for shine enhancing color and a trim by stylist Cary Thomas Carter-I got exactly what I asked for-this guy is a pro.

The setting could have had potential for a relaxing place. The problem was it didn't. The reception area acts as the 'relaxtion' room after the massage. The problem was that it also was the reception area for people waiting to get their haircuts and kids waiting for their mommies to finish getting their haircuts. I was lathered up with this oily oil and saw that there were showers in each massage room, but I was never offered the option to take a shower. What kind of place doesn't let you take a shower after a massage? Lastly, you change in this tiny space and you are suppose to shove all your clothes into a canvas bag and hand it to the receptionist. For the price I paid for a 60 minute massage, $115, I should at least expect to feel clean when I leave the place. Very disappointing.

I was recently at Kamalaspa on a trip to SF, I have had many facials over the years but this one was absolutely wonderful. Lots of massage, and even a scalp massage. I highly recommend a facial. I also had an eyebrow waxing and was the least painful and wasn't even red afterward which it usually is with my sensitive skin. They do recommend the products, but every place I have gone also does-- I didn't feel pressured or anything. The fabrics on the walls and ceiling and the indian theme throughout makes the area very cozy. It isn't cheap but worth the experience-

My massage started 30 mins late and the front desk was rude when I checked it. The table squeak during the massage, the sheets smelled like old rags and the music was too loud. I did not receive the treatment that was described in the menu. The steam room had hair left over from the previous client and the steam jet shoots straight out, nearly burning me. To top it off, I was hit with a $150 bill for a service that a massage chair could have done a better job.

Hey i just recieved a massage from Kamala. After hearing such great reviews about it, i thought that i would save up and treat myself. Although i felt that the therapist did a good massage, i just wasnt impressed with the whole experience. I expected more for what i had paid, in comparing it to lower priced places you get alot more for what you pay. I just wasnt satisfied with it and dissapointed.

My pedicure and manicure was a relaxing and I felt like a princess from the moment I walked into the spa, waiting in the tearoom over looking Union Square, to laying in the amazing pedi-mani shaes, listening to the relaxing / Indian style music to the interaction with the kind employees. I felt welcome and well taken care throughout my visit.

I have been a very good girl, and I deserve only the best. There is no more gorgeous, glamorous, sophisticated spa or salon in The Bay Area. Kamala Spa is like nothing else. All of the other spas seem very institutional and facility-like compared to this. I may as well be in my very wealthy friends vacation home in some exotic land far, far away. Edgardo is not only the most delicious looking master stylist around, but he is absolutely kind and caring, besides mega-talented. While there, be sure to splurge on a scrub and spray-on tan. Their special all-natural sugar-based tan is not only healing and nourishing for the skin, but lasted two full weeks on me! Amber and Chris have created heaven on earth! Thanks! -KRO

The entire experience at Kamalaspa was the best that I have ever encountered. From the staff who were extremely professional to all the services available, Kamalaspa is the best spa that I have ever attended in the USA and throughout the many countries where I have traveled.

Kamala spa is located on the seventh floor overlooking Union Square but once inside, might as well be millions of miles from the bustle of the city. Apparently inspired by India's colonial days, the interior is both luxurious and comfortable - adorned with rich reds, dark woods, and beautiful drapery throughout. After being greeted by two very friendly staff, we were seated in the relaxation room and offered a glass of wine. We had reserved the special "couples room," and after meeting our masseuses we were led to the dimly lit double room for a 60-minute Yugala couples massage and steam bath. The masseuses were responsive to our requests and the atmosphere was very relaxing. The steam bath -- a suggestion of the front desk -- was great.

I have no idea the grief that some reviewers allegedly "claim" at Kamala Spa, but as a seasoned Spa afficionado I have to give two enthusiastic thumbs-up to Kamala!!! Not only are they attentive, service oriented, and quality driven, they go the extra yard to make every visit special. NEVER have I or my partner (or my friends) felt shilled-upon by their staff to buy products. Recommendations are made, and the buyer can choose (as should be the case.) As to the negative reviews, I suspect either sour grapes on the part of competitors or someone inexperienced to a QUALITY spa service. I remain an ardent supporter and client of Kamala Spa!

I went in there to get my facial a week before my wedding. It was my first time there, but based on the reviews I decided to check it out. I have to say that the facials are nothing special, you can get one elsewhere for alot cheaper. Although, I highly recommend Daphne, she was super nice and knowledgeable. The front end staff was a little ditzy and not very friendly.
One thing that was really disappointing was that I made it clear that I wanted to get rid of the blackheads on my nose. I came home and inspected it and I had quite a few left.
For the money, I'd recommend going elsewhere. I was hoping I'd have clean, glowing skin before the wedding, but I guess I'll have to live with so so skin.

The concept, the place, the treatments are all great but I agree with another reviewer who mentioned rude staff. I sent my girlfriend in who had a good time. The last spa we hit before Kamalaspa was at The Fairmont in Banff, Alberta - Canada.. where they import the healing waters from Hungary.. so we are not neophytes to the spa scene. Kamalaspa sounded really promissing until I ran into the following problems:

-they screwed up the bill even after I spoke at length with them (twice)
-they never offered an apology and made it seem like it happened frequently.
-when i told her i was upset she disagreed with me and we started quarelling..

I was treated rudely and unprofessionally and I was just paying for it..

All I know is that the afterglow of a massage can be
easily ruined by rude, unaccomodating staff. Spend your money elsewhere.

Walking in, it is like an oasis of calm and beauty in a hectic world. The venue is sumptous and beautiful with dark carved wood and incredible exotic drapery. I had the four-hands massage with Murray and G. You can't really concentrate on what both people are doing and have to just let go and relax into it..... And it sweeps you away. The two massuers were incredibly in-sync and their togetherness was so relaxing. The foot, abdomen, and face massages are not often done in regular massages and were soooooo good! I had a wonderful steam bath to finish which was the icing on the cake. Afterwards, wrapped in a fuzzy robe, sipping champagne in the relaxing tea room, I didn't want to leave. I highly recommend this experience, if you have a couple of hundred bucks to pamper yourself.

My girlfriend gets her hair cut at Kamalaspa, raves about it, and begged for me to get her a spa package. I figured I'd try it out to make sure the spa was "worthy" of a gift for her.

I got a "four-hands" massage and it was awesome - two massage therapists at once. I can't recommend it enough. Simply awesome. Needless to say, I got her a gift certificate.

The decor is perfect. Very elegant and very Indian. There's a really ncie waiting area overlooking Union Square. The staff was also very prompt and professional.

It's definitely a high-end spa, but the prices are not through the roof. I've had worse massages in SF for more money, but I haven't had a better massage...ever.

I had yet another wonderful experience at KamalaSpa. Everyone is so personable. The massage I had (w/Heather) was truly amazing, just like the one I had before (w/Tanya and Heather everyone should have the 4-hand abyanga massage with them, it is life changing!). Both massages made such a difference in the way I felt and my overall outlook on in my life. I also feel this way after a haircut with John he is an amazing person and the best stylist in the City! Your staff are excellent in administering the Ayurvedic principles. Ive been to qute a few spas in the City, and your is by far the best in every aspect.

In addition Kamala Spa is a professional and a beautiful place! The nuts/fruit, different beverages, and lush robes, and comfy slippers make it a very comfortable place to arrive early to.

What a great experience. I'm not much of a spa guy, but my girlfriend talked me into trying out this new place on Union Square. I got the best haircut of my life (from Edguardo - sp?), and the massage was incredible.

The place was decked out, too. The ceiling is covered by soft drapery, the entre place is soaked in dark soothing colors, there's a really cool aquarium in the wall, and several ornately handcrafted Indian woodwork are scattered about.

Now I see they're voted SF's best. No surprise there.

I went with a friend and we got haircuts and massages. It was such a wonderful time, I'll be back for sure and highly recommend it. It's the best day spa I've been to in SF - and I'm a spa addict!

The facilities were brand new and very lush. It looks like they really put some money into this place. It's also right on Union Square.

The massage was just right, and we took steam showers afterwards in our rooms. The haircut was one of the best I've ever had. I only have good things to say about this place.

I just read that Kamala Harris sponsored Kamalaspa and they donated money to several organizations. You are walking into an "I dream of Jeannie" world where you leave your stress and worries at the elevator when you step off the 7th floor.
