Terrible service. The gentleman who seated us and took our order could not have been more disinterested. In fact, every question we asked him seemed to bother him. What's worse is that after we ordered, our food did not arrive for almost 40 minutes (no exaggeration). When I asked the waiter/host why it was taking so long, he was very short with me. "We're busy as you can see." To culminate this terrible experience, they brought us an item we didn't even order, and then charged us for it despite our protest. I will not be returning to this restaurant. If you want to eat Indian food while in Santa Barbara, I encourage you to go to a different restaurant. There are many Indian restaurants in Santa Barbara. Avoid Taj Cafe.

We ordered the Lamb Tandoori and Garlic Chicken. They started off our palettes by bringing out Indian Style Salsa and Chips with a side of Mango Chutney. My tastebuds were so happy after the dipped chip in mango chutney and a scoop of the salsa- I knew then the food was going to be good. The food came out, and it was simply put the best sight for a hungry tummy. The Lamb looked perfect on a bed of seasoned rice and salad, and the basket of naan.... ah- visual buffet. The lamb was the best marinated meat of Any ethnicity I've ever put in my mouth. It was tender and marinated with bold Indian flavors, not dumbed down at all to please the local crowd.

I don't know why it's called a cafe. A cafe brings to mind ready-made food slapped together at the last minute. This is not cafe food. It's Seriously Good Food.

Do try the mint tea with sweet milk - bottomless believe it or not.. It complement the spices of the food. And you can skip the samosas here- I think the chips and salsa is good enough of an appetizer.

And dessert, try that yummy rice dessert in cooled yogurt... is it yogurt? not sure.. but sweet rice dessert- good stuff.

I first visited this restaurant last year when I was feverishly searching for quality Indian dining. I had gotten used to very authentic, delicious Indian and Pakistani food from Los Angeles that when I moved to Santa Barbara, I was skeptical of finding a great Indian restaurant in a relatively small city. Taj Cafe quicly became my favorite Indian restaurant and I highly recommend it for Indian cuisine lovers. Even for those who are not familiar with exotic foods, and are willing to explore, I strongly suggest visiting this place in downtown Santa Barbara!

PROS: Wonderful food
CONS: Somewhat slow service, but worth the wait!
