I bought a 1999 VW Passat Wagon from these guys in May of 2008. It seemed to be in good condition and was in my price range, or so I thought. Three months later my car broke down on the way home from Santa Barbara and after a $200 tow ride back, I took it back to SM Volvo-Saab to have it looked at. I find out that the timing belt is completely shot and has done damage to the engine in the tune of nearly $3,000 but they would "do me a favor" and give me a discount. I was also at that time that those particular models tend to have that issue. It would have been nice to know about that when I bought the car so that I could keep an eye out for it but apparently they saw an opportunity to sell rather than be honest and keep someone safe. So I get the repair and am told that I'm good to go. No apologies, no advice as to what I should look out for in the future.

Two years later my car dies yet again on the freeway on the way back from Calabas to downtown. Another couple of hundred dollars of a tow ride to a really trustworthy and honest mechanic who opens the hood and automatically says "well your timing belt is shot. Who is the hack who repaired this?" The estimate came in right at $3,000 again which is more than double what I owe on the car. My mechanic asked me when I had the work down and when I tell him July of 2008 he is floored and goes on to tell me that he's never in his 20 years of owning a shop, fix a timing belt to then have it taken back to his shop. Never. And if he did, he'd have to close his shop because no customer would ever trust him again.

At this point I call SM Volvo-Saab and speak to David who basically tells me there is nothing that they can do about it and that these cars "tend to have this problem." To which I tell him what my other mechanic told me about how this should not have happened again after the first repair that his shop did. He had no reply and was not willing to come to some sort of fair solution whatsoever even though, at this point I've spent over $12,000 at his business.

I am not the type of person to haggle and I consider myself very fair and this is the first time I've ever made a complaint like this because I strongly believe that people must know what it is that they are walking into. It's my advice to stay as far away from them as possible and go to another shop. You'll save yourself thousands.

These guys are genuine Sweds who know everything about Volvos. I've taken my car here for everything from standard maintenance to major repairs. They were a great help in finding me a used replacement part that saved me a great deal of money.
