Philippe The Original is one of the oldest and best known restaurants in Southern California. Philippe's was established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, who claimed the distinction of having created the "French Dipped Sandwich." Philippe's "French Dipped Sandwich" is the specialty of the house and consists of either beef, roast pork, leg of lamb, turkey or ham served on lightly textured, freshly baked French roll which has been dipped in natural gravy of the roast. We our also known for our breakfast, deli sandwiches, salad, soups, bake goods, drinks, wine and beer. So check out our menu!

In Short
For more than a century, this landmark eatery has been serving Angelenos the original French dip sandwich. Situated between Dodger Stadium and Union Station, this cavernous spot is decorated with baseball and train motifs, long tables for communal dining and sawdust on the floor. There's standard deli fare--soups, sandwiches, salads, plus a slew of pies--but everyone knows that everyone comes here for the famed sandwich. Meat (beef, pork, lamb, ham or turkey) is dunked in au jus and layered in a perfect French roll. Sides are classics as well--think crispy slaw and creamy macaroni salad. There's also a wide choice of pickled things--tangy beets, purple eggs, pigs' feet and, of course, a full complement of pickles. Wash your big dipper down with a cold brew or a glass of cabernet from the extensive wine list.

The beef sandwich is just fine, but try the lamb, it's verry nice indeed. The spicy mustard really sets it off. Then get yourself a glass of homemade lemonade and a cup of tapioca and a 9 cent cup of Yuban for desert. Heaven, baby!

Ratings_icons French Dip Wars, Part I

In the legendary battle of the French dips, Philippe gets my vote. I am partial to the beef sandwich, double-dipped (natch) and top it with a dollop of the rip-snorting house mustard. Don't let the sawdust-covered floor fool you, Philippe offers some great wines by the glass.
