This is a great place. To start with the staff is amazingly nice. Then the food comes. It is always super fresh but they also always have something really unique. If you are in the area give it a try but do call for reservations

Had a coupon from Restaurant.com and enjoyed it very much! Albacore and crispy onion was great. K9 roll - AWESOME. And one of the better spicy tuna on rice cakes I've had!

We dined here because we had a coupon from restaurant.com. Their food was just alright -- nothing really stood out so I can't tell you if that's good or bad.

I enjyoed drink & Izakaya menu.

My husband and I live in the neighborhood and go there every week, and we have never been disappointed. The food is excellent. We usually order sushi off of the chef's specials supplemented by rows. The sushi is great and the regular rows are excellent - especially the octopus and yellow tuna. I sometimes sit at the bar and watch the chefs put a big amount of fish in rows that cost only $7. In terms of pricing- it can get expensive but it really depends on what you order! We have never paid over $100 for 2 people. Regular 6 piece sushi rows are $7-10, special rows (usually 8 pieces) $15-20, sushi starts at $6 and goes to $15. They always have great specials selection on sushi for $6-8 for 2 pieces. One thing to be mindful - different chefs do sushi quite differently - some put a lot more wassabi, sometimes the rice is not as sticky. Tell them what you want and how you want the sushi and rolls done and they will do it if you are not entirely happy with the first selection.

Pros: Great food, ambiance

Cons: Staff can get too busy Fri/Sat night

I went for lunch here and ordered sushi combination. It came with 6 pcs of nigiri, California roll, miso soup and salad. The portion was just right for me. I really enjoyed fresh and tasty sushi here. It is a hidden gem.

My husband and I live nearby and are always in the mood for Kanpai. The service is fantastic, the staff is always friendly and we are never let down. Yes, it isn't cheap, but cheap sushi usually equals a really unpleasant next day. I've had nothing but wonderful, delicious experiences here and we always recommend Kanpai to our friends. "Must try" daily specials are amazing, and don't leave without trying the Pepper Toro sushi.

If you want terrible service and you don't mind spending a ton of money, then this is the place for you. The owner and wait staff are extremely unfriendly and rude and be prepared to spend no less than $45 for one person at lunch. I would not recommend this restaurant. There are much better restaurants in the LA area that offer better sushi and the service is much better.

I want given a recommendation for this restaurant by a friend. I travel to Japan quite a bit and found this place to be just extremely good. The staff was knowledgeable and so friendly, I felt quite at home. I live near the area and I was amazed that I had never been here.

The rice could be a little better and maybe a tad to expensive.

I ate here with two other people back in 10/06. This is one of the few sushi joints that actually offers Echigo beer -- far better than the ususal Asahi / Sapporo / Kirin. The food was great and the service was decent. Although the restaurant is fairly small, they still manage to fit people in without being too crowded. Overall, I recommend it for any LAX-area sushi lover!

I didn't think some of the sushi was that great, but some of the food was really good, like the Kobe beef, live scallops, Dynamite. I thought the service was fine, but the place was not crowded yet. I thought their blue fin tuna was slightly fishy, the yellowtail was just okay. The fresh water eel was good. I guess it depends on what you order, but I will come back and just order the specialty items. It is pricey, two people $75 each and not a ton of food. The Kobe beef was $35 by itself.

I read a few bad reviews for this restaurant and I really dont' know how it can even be that bad. I've been there close to 10 times and every single time i had great food and decent service. it's a little pricey but i think it's worth the taste. my favorite is the grill shitake mushromm sushi. :D i highly recommend this place.

Little on expensive side at $45 - 65 per person without alcohol. Some rare fish, changed daily. Service is usually good. Sushi pizza was interesting and very tasty - must try. Place could fill up pretty quickly.

We had dinner here recently and were so struck by how awful the service was. The food is average and extremely overpriced. But, what ruins the dining experience entirely is the horrible, rude and incompetent service. There are a ton of better Japanese restaurants in the area with better food, fresher sushi, and friendlier staff. Needless to say, we won't be going back and neither will any of our friends.

Okay, so I'm working down by LAX and really wanting sushi for lunch. If you're near the area, I'm sorry. There isn't much in the "decent food" area down here. Anyway, I happen to stumble on this place heading towards Marina Del Ray. God, I wish I would have kept driving....

I sit down and have the sushi chef set me up with what he feels I would enjoy. To make a long story short, $97 later (yes, for just me at LUNCH!) I'm walking out the door feeling like I was in Tokyo!

This was the one and only place I have ever been robbed with food. I won't even talk about the food because the few plates he set me up with couldn't even come close to being worth $97!!!

I'd have a hard time buying a ticket to go see Jesus for $97.

I love coming here from 4:30-6:45 to take advantage of Early Bird specials on a handful of sushi items and appetizers. Everything is always very good and the service is not as bad as some of the other reviews have made it seem. Definately check out some of their amazing soecialty rolls, and if you don't mind spending the cash, the Special Peppered Toro sushi is heaven.

I love Kanpai sushi. The crowd is not your typical, pretentious L.A. crowd; instead it's rather chill. To enjoy this place to the fullest, shell out the bucks, order off the fresh sheet, and ask the chef for recommendations. Their live scallop with dynamite is the best sushi item I have ever eaten.

Pros: Pleasant chefs, good value for top-shelf items

Cons: waitstaff has trouble with English

My half-Japanese friend tells me there's much more authentic sushi in L.A. Little Tokyo, Little Osaka, he tells me. It's fresher, better.

Maybe that's true, but I've never been disappointed with Kanpai and it's definitely my favorite place for sushi. The place is decorated in the minimalist style of brushed metal and wood with televisions lining the walls playing sports or Japanese movies. But the service is like that of a local dive--for better or for worse. Sometimes it can take a while to get your food. Maybe you'll wait longer than you should to get attention while the staff chats it up with someone at a nearby table. But let someone know, and you'll be sure to get what you need and come in enough and they'll know what you want. Being on a college budget, I don't go out for Japanese food much, but whenever I drop in to Kanpai they remember me.

The food is fresh and delicious. The salads are made with fresh greens and a sweet ginger dressing. And the variety of sea life behind the bar makes for great sushi. Sushi standards like salmon accompany by more expensive, less common fares on the menu like Alaskan King Crab and Kobe beef. In addition to basic sushi, they prepare a number of hand rolls and special rolls including the torch-toasted Hot Cutie roll.

For those not fond of sushi, they offer tempura and teriyaki dishes, along with a special menu offered some nights when a master Japanese chef is in. To sip with dinner, they offer a large menu of sake as well as a great selection of imported beersbe sure to ask about some of their special brews which change from time to time.

Finish dinner with a buttery rich and delicious tempura fried ice cream, which is offered in a plethora of flavorsI recommend green tea.

Pros: amazing food in a great atmosphere

Cons: sometimes slow service, the price tag (it's Japanese food, afterall)

.

great raw. bad service....almost to the point of making you not want to return. but if it's your local lunch time haunt, you risk it again and again. you may get your miso after lunches are served for 3/4 of the table and still be waiting for the appetizers too. lunch timing is crucial or you stand outside on lincoln blvd waiting for a table. albacore with crispy onions is pretty damn good.

Great food, and new to try. I like the sake selection, true the Japanese beer selection is good, too. I live in Westchester and am very grateful that we now have a hip place to eat Sushi.

Great lunch place if you live/work near the restaurant.

I love this place! They serve the freshest sushi.
I have been to many sushi palces around LA but Kanpai is my favorite one out of all of them. They have both the trendy/fusion sushi as well as the traditional stuff.
They usually have rare sake/beer that they get from Japan.
Make sure to check their today's special sheet.

Wanted to try this relatively new place. Sushi - mediocre, Teriyaki Chicken - bland, mashed potatoes with edamame? Didn't work for me. Service - waitresses confused easily. When asked what ingredients in Shrimp Tempura Sushi, one had to take out a cheat sheet from her pocket to explain. Parking is not easy around the dinner hour. Restaurant not exceptionally busy, but food took too long to arrive at table, yet 2-3 guys were working the sushi bar.
