I am not really sure what the people before me are talking about. I adopted my puppy there a few months ago and we were there for hours while they ran a check on whether we could take the dog, making sure that we had the proper space and time for the dog. especially like one of the vets at the AAA animal hospital next door. He is very friendly and has taken the time to answer any questions about our new puppy. The nurse staff over there is wonderful, they know our names and our dog, and they took time to become familiar with us.

Don't believe all the bad reviews. I had a great experience adopting my dog. It took me a long time to find the perfect match for a new pet. I returned to this shelter and others several times and the staff kept my information on file & the volunteers were very friendly. They knew all the dogs at the shelter unlike the overcrowded county shelter. "Foxy" came with shots & the Dr. examined the her before going home. She even got doggy school training at the shelter and each time I brought her back the staff was happy to see her! Bravo, the remodel is beautiful!

I recently filled out an application for volunteer work there. Because I had heard and read bad things about the facility in the past and currently on line , I had hoped that it had changed with the remodel. I noticed the dogs were being walked in the heat of the day. There is absolutely no shade anywhere nearby. So, I asked a current volunteer if it was possible to walk the dogs earlier or later. She said absolutely not. Since they ask all about your driver license information, I asked her if it was possible to drive the dogs to a shady spot for a walk. AGAIN, NO! The volunteers seem to be afraid of answering questions but assured me the place was better than before. Before I left I saw a couple of cute caged dogs so I asked the paid office workers if I could put my name in for them. I also asked if they had any info on them.(breed age etc) They said they had no info(i don't believe them, they appear to be very anti social and not want to deal with the public.) They also said it would not do any good to put my name down but reluctantly agreed to do so, Well, surprise, in 2 weeks I gotta call and was told I could have the dogs, just come and get them(I had never filled out anything and was never screened) I was very excited and said I could be there in one hour. They said that would be fine. I got there 50 minutes after they called me and there was a lady already walking out with the 2 dogs they had called me about. Now, no one said to me, you need to hurry because we're calling other people (is that from the list they claim they don't keep?)Anyway, the place is bizarre, they do not seem to have any rhyme or reason for why they do things. And they do not even attempt to explain things. And, here's the weird part, I was gracious about this lady getting the dogs but they could probably tell I was disappointed.. I even chatted with the new doggies' owner and found out that even though these were very small fragile, dogs their new owner said she had a three year old.child. I thought, "ah, oh poor dogs" So, I figure they didn't screen her either. All they want it seems is their money and they want it quickly! And, guess what, even thought they supposedly need volunteers, not one person ever called or interviewed me for volunteer work even though I have done volunteer work for other rescue operatations and stated so on the application. I think someone tipped them off that I asked a few questions and they just black-balled me. Not a nice place!

It's shocking that this place is allowed to be called the OC Humane Society"! It is run by a few paid workers who are not there because they care about animals. Plus the vet - who is next door - totally lacks compassion for any of the animals. Then I come to find out he owns the shelter and it all makes sense why it is run the way it is! I do feel sorry for the animals, and it seems there are many good volunteers there but there are many other great shelters and great vets in the area that you should go to! Read most of the comments written and you'll get the picture!

This place is NOT associated with the United States Humane Society as most people are lead to believe! And it is certainly not run in a humane way. The staff treats its volunteers and the public horribly. And if it wasn't for those volunteers the animals wouldn't get any attention or care. It is actually owned by the vet at AAA Animal Hospital who just cares about making money - he does not even donate his service to the animals who are there! Talk to good vets in the neighborhood, they will tell you the reputation of this place! There are many other shelters in and around H.B. who actually care about animals - such as "Save Our Strays" or the "Animal Network" - please check out these places first.

The staff here is unbelievably rude. I work with animal rescue and can't say how many times over the last 3 years I've given them chances to be civil and they're just mean, arrogant, rude people - always! The AAA clinic, attached, under same ownership is even ruder, plus EXPENSIVE, and does not take adaquate precautions before surgical procedure. I decided not to leave my cat to be neutered my first time there. I didn't trust them right off. This place is the pits in customer service - if this is how they treat people, I can imagine how they treat their 4 legged guests.
PROS: There is absolutely nothing good about this place except the volunteers
CONS: RUDE EXPENSIVE RUDE RUDE ARROGANT RUDE EXPENSIVE RUDE

I've been here twice before and looked at dogs. This kennel is very small and so there are very few dogs to choose from. I have seen some good pets there, but if you're picky you'll have a hard time. The kennels are semi-clean and there is a pretty strong smell when you walk in. The office on the way in is tiny, so it's easy to bump into other people trying to walk in or out of the place. I think I'd go to another kennel first.

We have had bad experiences with this shelter. We adopted our dog through them, and went back to ask a question. The staff was rude. While we were there, another woman came in because the dog she adopted was not suitable for her home. Although this isn't an ideal situation, the staff was extremely rude to her. It was completely unnecessary. The clinc attatched to the shelter is not very good, either. I had no choice but to take my dog there to be neutered, as it was their requirement, so that they made sure it was done. There are much better clinics for much better prices in Orange County.

Besides being able to find your new dog or cat here, you can take care of your pet's licensing here too. Staff are friendly and parking is easy and uncrowded. Not the largest selection of animals I've ever seen at a shelter, but you can also look through the animals here, and at the other OC shelters, online first.
