I went to Bokaos the other day for a perm and left very unhappy with the quality and look of the service and the close to $300 price tag. The details are too boring to rehash, but I think it's safe to say that a perm, with related activities (washing and a trim) should NOT take 7.5 hours. Yep, you read correctly, I spent 7.5 hours today having my hair done, only to have it go from being EXTRA curly once the rods were removed, to very straight. Why's that? Isn't a perm supposed to be curly? Well, given that after the treatment it was out of control, the stylist tried to calm it by flatironing it and blow drying it with a round brush in order to 'disguise' the overdoneness of it...for TWO HOURS.

It's official, I have officially used up all of my self-allotted salon and beauty time with this visit. If I see the inside of a salon again in the next nine months, that will be too soon!

Best of luck with your time there, that's about all I can say!

I just saw Alfred at the new Bokaos at Americana in Glendale. He is fantastic! Very down to earth and friendly. No attitudes here. I had been going to Glendale Salon/Spa (another Aveda salon) and stopped going because my stylist was never on time and left me waiting for more than 15 minutes every visit. Alfred was ready for me when I arrived and won me over with a complimentary mini-facial during my shampoo.

I stumbled upon Bokaos because my stylist (Nicole at Wax Poetic......HORRIBLE stylist) flaked on me at the last minute when I had a very important event to go to and needed my hair dyed from natural medium brown to platinum blonde. They were the only ones in my area who had room available at such short notice, and i LOVE Aveda so I trusted them to do the job. I got set up with Bertha and she did an absolutely amazing job, and I am VERY particular about my hair. She cut, colored, and styled my hair as if it was her event and she was doing my hair as if it was her own. I went back for her to fix my hair (yet again, that Nicole from Wax Poetic ruined..... she dyed my roots and singed all my hair off) and Bertha did a gorgeous job. The most recent time I saw her she cut my long hair into a "posh spice bob" which I was petrified of since I haven't had short hair in ages, and again, she did a beautiful job. I am thrilled with my hair and as long as she's doing hair I won't go to anyone else! Highly recommended! A+++++++!

Be Careful! The stylists at this salon are inconsistent and going here ruined my hair.

My first appointment at this salon was with Kim for color. She was very sweet and communicative and listened to what I wanted. But after she'd colored and washed my hair, while it was still wet (and I couldn't yet see if the color), I showed her a photograph of a haircut I was considering getting later on and she just began chopping into my hair. I was kind of stunned but figured there was nothing I could do at that point. When she blew-out my hair, the color hadn't changed and the cut was awful. It had lots of short layers that I could tell would take a long time to grow out. When I went to pay, I discovered that the spontaneous, request-lacking cut was an additional $ 60. They also didn't give me the advertised first-time 20% discount because I hadn't brought the coupon with me.

A couple weeks later, I called the salon back because I was so unhappy and the salon owner, Hasblady, guaranteed she could fix the problem. When I went in, she looked at my hair and asked where I had gotten it cut, because she thought it looked like it had been hacked off with a straight-razor. I felt bad because I really liked Kim, but told her who had cut it.

Has's method was very strange to me - she has multiple assistants at her beck and call and her process is very fast-paced and feels very impersonal - assembly-line-like. She also jerked my head around by the jaw while she colored my hair, which bothered me because I have sensitive skin, but she knows what she's doing and is amazing with color. She fixed my color completely. I was very relieved.

I was happy with the salon overall until I went back for a touch-up. This time I booked it with Arlene. She did not seem to want to listen to what I wanted and actually suggested that I stop trying to explain and just let her go ahead and start coloring. Then she put on way too much bleach - more highlights than I'd ever had before and definitely more than I asked for, and left the foils in way too long. The highlights came out whitish green - it was completely dried-out and horrible!

By that point I had been in the salon either waiting or sitting with the foils on my head for over three hours (for a partial highlight, which normally takes an hour and a half) and I needed to leave. I told the receptionist I would call to schedule an appointment to have it fixed. Then they tried to charge me $ 125 even though I had been promised $ 115 for the appointment over the phone, and the highlights were all wrong and green!

When I called to schedule the appointment, I was told Has did not have time to see me. When I finally got an appointment almost an entire month later, I had to pay for it myself and it didn't fix the green highlights.

When I've called to try to get a refund on the green highlights (which, again, I paid to have fixed and that didn't even work) or resolve the problem somehow, the salon either doesn't return my calls, or the receptionist is extremely rude.

I have basically spent over $ 200 at this salon to have my hair destroyed so that for months, everytime I look in the mirror, I regret going here and all I can do is wear my hair up and hope it doesn't take too long to grow out.

I couldn't in good conscience recommend this salon to anyone.

This place is fine if you want a run-of-the-mill Anytown, USA look or service, but it doesn't live up the the Aveda quality by any means. Furthermore the stylists skills are questionable at best. They are very nice and cheery people but spend more time gossiping with each other and about each other (and about other customers) than focusing on doing a quality job. After wondering during my own wash why my stylist wasn't washing underneath above the neck (really!), I actually heard another customer (with a different stylist) tell them, "don't be afraid to wash the back of my head too!" I couldn't believe it.

The cut and color service I saw while I was there were also not worth the price paid. How mine turned out was awful: a trim with a bit of layering around the face turned out as a mullet...awful. When I asked questions about basic technique and why I was being cut the way I was, my stylist looked like a deer in headlights. Honestly, I feel bad posting this here but wouldn't wish what I have to grow out for the next few months on anyone, and feel like I HAVE to warn people not to trust your appearance to these stylists.

New in town, I always like to stake my local AVEDA salon and I found it walking around Old Pasadena. It has all the AVEDA products and a full hair salon.

I was just walking by and went it and when I asked about the salon they let me know that my first visit would be 20% off. So I had a cut and color and the price was totally reasonable and the hair looked great.

Make sure you get your scalp massage - it's an AVEDA thing but it is so relaxing. I fell asleep.

If you like the product and are looking for a great hair salon check these guys out.

I finally did it! I got the hair extensions and they look amazing. My friend told me to check Bokaos out and I'm so happy I did. Seriously I get tons of compliments and it couldn't look and feel more natural.

I debated a while whether or not to dive into it but after talking with the stylist and discussing cost and all that I felt more than comfortable that I was in good hands...and I was.

I was there a while and everyone was cool and fun. They used Great Lengths on me for the extensions so drop that name. I guess its the brand.

I will definitely be back!

I just moved here from Chicago and where ever I live I have to find my neighborhood AVEDA Salon. And walking down Colorado in Old Town Pasadena I found my new hair salon. It has all of the AVEDA I could ask for as well as a great stylist who cut and colored my hair. I was taken care of the moment I walked in and just rode that until I was checked out.

The bonus was the 20% off they gave me because I was a first time customer. I'll take it.

Remember to ask for the free scalp and hand massage - it's an AVEDA thing and sooo worth it. I fell asleep in the chair. Seriously, I think I drooled a bit. I love my cut and highlights too.

I will totally be back! Check it out.

Okay so I have been toying with the idea of hair extensions and was recommended to check out this hair salon. They set me up with Great Lengths, I guess they're called. I am not an expert but they look amazing. Seriously every where I go I get so many compliments on my hair. People don't even believe that they are extension - they look super natural.

Even if you are just thinking about it at least go in for a consult. That's what I did and they were totally up front about cost and what to expect. I was there for a while but everyone was really nice and made me feel comfortable. Just a cool salon. Good vibe.

Definitly going back.

Massage at Bokaos is inexpensive when I priced other Old Town locations - a steal for Heather's massage! She's new there but she's done massage for, like, fifteen years AND she's a Rolfer. Don't know what that is? Look it up, people- it's the same as being a Ph.D. in massage! Her touch is great and she really listens. I'm going back for a facial! Oh! She did my brows= AMAZING. I admire the AVEDA mission and I have always enjoyed every AVEDA experience. I'm going back for more!

I've seen Renata a handful of times for hair cuts (no color). She's a very lovely woman who really listened and took her time in giving me what I wanted. The downside is that there's usually a wait to see her, but I guess that's what happens when you find a good stylist!

I have had my hair cut twice with Adrienne and have been pleased. My husband had a cut with Kim and has also been pleased. Problem is we got a call trying to move an appointment and expressed we couldn't. They called back again about an hour later to see if we could change the appointment. We told them we couldn't. After three calls to us, they stopped.
Just today I waited for someone to pick up the phone for about 3 minutes and then was placed on hold with no friendliness on the other side. Nice salon, expensive ($68 for women's cuts) and for that price maybe they would be a little nicer. Today I will find a new place to spend my money

I've been there twice, each time for a haircut with Adrienne. The first time, the cut was excellent. Even though she seemed to be in her own little world, I wanted to return because I just loved the haircut-- layered cut with nice texture, face-framing bangs. I thought I had found my stylist! The 2nd time wasn't the same. The cut felt unfinished and a bit choppy, which wasn't what I wanted. Unfortunately, I'm not very forgiving when it comes to hairstylists. I value consistency (at $68/haircut) and a welcoming personality always makes it more pleasant. (I haven't been to the other stylists, so they might be worth giving a shot.) I give it 4 stars, an average of 5 stars for my first visit and 3 stars for the second visit.

PROS: Wonderful smell of Aveda products, scalp treatment before shampoo
CONS: Inconsistent quality

I chose this salon off the internet as a place to have my, my bridesmaids', and my mother's hair and makeup done for my wedding. Before discovering Bokaos, I had a difficult time finding a salon or artist to do our hair and makeup. I went to one trial and it was bad--really bad. I called Bokaos two weeks before my wedding and they were able to accommodate our entire party.

Every person at Bokaos was amazing! The service was excellent and our hair and makeup was out of this world! In addition, we thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent in the salon.

If you are looking for someone to do your bridal hair, request the owner, Hasblady. She is awesome! The staff who worked on my bridesmaids also did a tremendous job. Makeup by Vanessa cannot be beat!

We were THRILLED with the service and results we received when we went to Bokaos. I live on the East Coast. Otherwise, Bokaos would be my salon of choice permanently.

You won't be disappointed with this salon. It is just not possible.

PROS: Excellent Service, Attentive Staff, Great Results

I have been going to Bokaos for years, and I have tried different stylist and I have never had a single problem. I get highlights and a cut and I am very picky with my hair. Right now I am currently going to Kim who is a really good stylist and such a sweetheart. She always has great new ideas on what to do with my hair, which is thick and unruly. I would defiantly recommend that you give it a try.

PROS: Great environment, great staff and quality hair stylist.
CONS: Parking

She is great at detailed and layered cuts - also straightening with a flat iron. I trust her judgement and skill when trying new looks or cuts that might be more complex. Salon atmosphere is modern and a little hip with high wooden ceiling and brick walls. You can take off your shirt and put on special smocks in a dressing room to keep clothes hair-free. An oil and scalp massage begin each haircut and wash - the skill of the attendant for each of these varies widely from visit to visit. Park at meters on the bridge or in a lot. Also offer other salon services.

They really do make their products/service an art and a science. Botanical and natural products. Extremely enthusiastic staff. Their website is a bit confusing, but their store is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommend! Come expecting to spend money.

The products are great and Adrienne gave me the best haircut I have ever had in my whole life. For years I wouldn't even get my hair cut because no one is good at cutting curly hair. Now I love my hair.

I went out on a limb thinking Aveda is a reputable name so they must have good stylists. NO. I paid alot of money to get highlights which after hours of sitting there you couldn't see! I was so dissappointed. The girl said I could come back and she would "fix" my hair (which looked no different than when I came in). On my second appointment she tried stripping the toner that covered the highlights she put in. I'm sure not the best for my hair. You still couldn't see the highlights after all that. My hair was pretty thrashed after that so I gave up. The kicker was that she still charged me!
