This place is actually really really accommodating if you have a big group. I've gone several times with my wife and I and waited for nearly 2 hours at times but when we recently went for a birthday with a party of 11 we got in within an hour and also got to pay a family price which was only $20 plus drink and it comes with 3 entrees, 3 appetizers and desert! Overall it is pretty cool!
Maggianos is a great hang out and restaurant. So ...much...Food!
Good to go too.
I visited the Carnes piano store across the street and they offered to buy my family dinner, we said, "we were really hungry" and they said this is why you should go to Maggianos. Italian style service and food dishes to the max. plus it was on the Piano store as we just spent $50,000 on a new grand piano, so it was a special day for us and the Dinner was just a very nice offer by the Carnes piano company, have been to maggianos, two or three times since and we really love it.
Want good service and lots of good food , bring your appetite and enjoy. Buy a big grand next door and get the meal for Free - or not.
We are looking for a venue to do my daughter's bd party. We need a place to accommodate 100+ people. Last sun we were in SR and decide to check out Maggino's banquet rooms and do lunch there.
My daughter and my niece put our names down for lunch seating. We asked for a table with room to accommodate the baby. We were told my niece's baby stroller had to be stored due to fire regulations and mother have to hold on to the baby.. We requested a both so my niece can have room for the baby, since he is too young for high chair.
After waiting 35 minutes, we were seated by aisle side table with 3 chairs and one high chair( no both as per our request). When we asked what happened to our both request. The hostess who were seating us said we have to wait 45 or more minutes again, f we want a booth. She said this is without checking or trying to see if she can even find something else. She left the menu's on the table and left, we could not believe her attitude.
I went to look for a manager, since there were two empty booths in the room. The manager turns out to be even biggest "....". Her body language and tone was demeaning and like a recording she too repeated the same lines as the hostess. She refused and failed to even make an attempt to look and see what can be done. She waisted no time to let us know ABOUT OUR OPTION TO LEAVE. Just to check I pointed the empty booths, she dismissed it by saying that is for the people who makes reservation.
Boggled and DISGUSTED by the behavior we left to go some where else where they are more customer friendly or at least meet the minimal customer service standards.
On the way out saw an other customer getting third degree from the hostess's desk. I guess MAGGINO IS TOO BUSY TO WORRY ABOUT SMALL THINGS LIKE CUSTOMER NEEDS AND SERVICE.
IT'S A SHAME THAT MAGGINO'S allowed their staff to treat their customers with SUCH A HORRIBLE ATTITUDE.
We started enjoying ourselves the minute we walked in the door and were greeted by the friendly host stand. Our server was also really nice, and were impressed to see his level of service. all our friends reccomended it to us and they have all had similar experiences. As far as the food goes, WOW!!!
After we all shared some calamari (DEFINITELY THE FRESHEST IN THE BAY AREA) and some Spinach salad, which bought me with its Gorgonzola and toasted pine nuts, I had the best Filet Mignon (med. rar) I have EVER had, and my brother had the NY steak, which he couldnt stop raving about, and we both concluded that Maggianos has the best steaks in san jose. and I know what you all think, steaks at an italian joint??? YES!!!! Ive been to morton's and all the steakhouses in San Jose that everyone raves about, but, I conclude that maggianos has the best steaks in san jose if not the bay area, by far. And you will never be disappointed with their portions....they also make some of the meanest, hugest martinis I have ever seen... I am definitely adding this restaurant to my frequent dining list, and reccomend to anyone reading this, especially people with respect for their meat, to go to Maggiano's ASAP and see for yourself what Im talking about.
It depends on what you order, but it's okay. It's not excellent, but I grew up on real homecooked Italian food, and this place doesn't have it all. You usually have to wait at least 15-30mins for seating. The portions are huge, but you get sick of it because it is huge. The price is good for the portion but, not the taste. I tried Maggianos in Los Angeles, and for some reason it tastes a little better there than at this one. All in all, someone obviously thinks it's good, since a lot of people eat here.
The food is not the BEST, but it is plentiful! The fried calamari is really good. Definitely go with a big group because you can then eat family style and try a variety of dishes. The amazing thing is that they have the "bottomless bowl" meaning you can have the dish refilled at no charge. So, you always have leftovers to bring home.
When my family and I first dined at Maggiano's Little Italy in Santana Row the second week after it opened, I couldn't believe how lucky we San Joseans were to get such a great Italian family restaurant that served delicious, heaping food at very reasonable prices in a lovely oak-paneled space while being impeccably served by the friendliest wait staff. Of course, nobody can sustain that kind of quality in a national chain restaurant. They never did live up again to that perfect first dining experience (sigh!), and the service and quality of food on subsequent visits have been up and down and sideways. The wait staff has mostly been attentive, but there have been days when they seemed too frazzled with the crowds they have to serve. Sometimes the calamari is perfectly crisp but there have been days when they've been undercooked and gross. You get the picture. Nevertheless it still remains our go-to restaurant when dining out with the kids when we are craving Italian food. The family dining option simply can't be beat in terms of value for your money. It does get ridiculously crowded on nights and weekends so make a reservation way in advance if you must eat there. Also, the crowds and the noise don't really make it a romantic dining destination so if that's what you're looking for, go elsewhere.
Maggiano's Little Italy is a hidden secret for Italian food lovers... Don't even bother with places like Olive Garden; they're no better than something you can pick up from the grocery store and microwave. Maggiano's combines large portions, authentic food, and a great ambiance for dining or celebrating special occasions with friends... it's truly a "don't miss"!
PROS: Great food; great ambiance.
CONS: Long waits.
Maggiano's is in Santa Row which is becoming more and more posh as I write this review. It is an excellent restaurant with good prices and good sized dishes. The only issue I have with it is the waiting time. If you call for a dinner reservation, you must do it at least a few days in advance. When you get there it will be crowded and last time we went there with a reservation we still had to wait 15 minutes.
There is the chance of getting a "bar table" which is first come first serve, but you will notice there are a LOT of people waiting for these tables.
The food is excellent. To be honest, I haven't ordered a single item I didn't like. If you are going to have a large party I also suggest to have it here. It looks upscale but with reasonable prices and they serve it all family style for large parties (you can select to have it for smaller parties as well). The first time I realized you had to do family style for large parties I was a bit upset, but it turned out great. You essentially get to try a little of everything. It came with salad, multiple entrees and dessert.
The only other bad part about Maggiano's is the noise level. I went here once with a party of four and we could barely hold a conversation because it was so loud. This was during dinner time. At lunch in a large party, we were put in the back section and could easily talk to each other. So I guess it depends on the time and where you are seated. I guess just don't expect to bring a date here unless you can request a quiet table.
This was a busy Saturday night. When we walked in, there was absolutely no indication of where to go to check in. The four of us started on a hunt to figure out how to check in. I finally found a check-in station against a wall, surrounded by about 20 people who had no where to go. The restaurant was packed, but there was no where for people to wait. After being rudely told I was standing in the wrong spot (I was on the side of the check-in station, not the front, bad naughty customer), once I talked to the host, it took several tries to find our reservations. The name was scrambled , the phone number only had about 1/2 the digits correct. We had to scroll through all the 7pm reservations to find mine. Once we got our buzzer, we couldn't do anything other than stand there and wait. There was no way we could move as there was no place to wait. While we waited, we saw 4 other groups get turned away because their reservations could not be found in the computer. One poor guy was there with a large family, they had to leave and try to find another restaurant on a Saturday night.
After waiting about 20 minutes (within my tolerance rate), we were finallly seated. I did go back to the check in station to get the name of the guy at the check-in counter who couldn't do his job. This got the attention of the manager, who came to our table when our appetizers appeared. He was very apologetic about the whole affair, and felt really bad. The food was really outstanding, that is the only reason I gave them any stars at all, so I am torn as to whether or not I will return. I was there with just a small group of 4, but was also checking out the restaurant for an upcoming corporate outing. I'm not sure if I will return there. Perhaps during the week, but certainly not in the weekend, and certainly not when the same guy is manning the check-in counter. (I'll spare him the embarrassment of puting his name in the review)
Pros: Food as the only reason it got any stars at all
Cons: Can't deal with restaurant more than 50% full
great taste of italy here. i love to eat here every time that i caaan . Please make one in los angeles so i dont gotta drive here
Fun atmosphere especially if your drinking a little bit. I went with three friends and we ended up getting way too much food. The price is fair and the service was good. Good food but not gourmet.
Nice restaurant. Proper seating arrangement. Salads, Brick-Pressed Sandwiches are the most popular dishes. Service - Personal is very friendly. Clean restaurant. The atmosphere can be very romantic and at the same time a good place for kids. Waitress was doing a great job. I am vey much impressed with the restaurant.
I absolutely love this place. The food is excellent and family style is all you can eat. The salads are fresh and a great choice of salads. The fried zucchini is to die for. There is a large wine list. I never really let restaurants workers attitude affect my experience so I never really give it alot of thought. I think anyone working a low paying hard working type of job will get grumpy from time to time. Go there enjoy the food and enjoy your company and just smile at the hostess or host and realize they have a tough job..
Pros: Alot of great food for a reasonable price
Cons: Need reservations
We had a great time. Enjoyed the crab cakes a lot. Best part was it was Sunday and there was music out in the courtyard area and lots of things to see and do including the Farmer's Market. Waiter was super attentive and knowledgeable. Busboy and hostess were not very nice but when you smell that food, who cares? Bathrooms were clean and nice also, which is a must in any decent restaurant. We've gone back three times in two weeks and it takes us an hour to get there, so we find it worth it.
Pros: Great Crab Cakes
Cons: Joyless Hostess, Crabby Busboy (who was older than my grandad)
This place is a great restaurant to share some food with friends. Try the pastas and taste how good it is! But the Pizza is even better. Also the service personal is very friendly.
1. The place is too dark. If it is a family place then why the pretense on romance.
2. The food had no flavor. Buco di pepo has more flavor. The clams and calamari were over cooked. The fish had hard dry oregeno on it that did not make a happy mouth moment.
3. The waitress was very slow and she had an attitude.
I am not going back.
Pros: A lot of food for the price
Cons: No taste and bad service
My wife and I stopped in here for a quick lunch. We ordered a couple of sandwiches and an appetizer(Chicken Parm, Meatball sub, and tomato/mozzerella+basil appetizer). Our server was a bit new, which probably justified her on the sunday lunch shift, and she was slow and made mistakes with our order. The food though was very good and with the table parmesian(sp?) cheese(nothing grated here, not fine dining), it picked up the mild sauce. The table bread wasn't very good, but the balsamic vinegar was excellent.
Pros: Good basic italian food
Cons: Bread, Service(we may have just gone at the wrong shift)
Given, I did get the Family Style meal (pretty much an all you can eat buffet) with 3 other people, but none the less, it was alot of food. For less than $30 per person, you choose from 2 appetizers, 2 salads, 2 pastas, 2 main courses, and 2 desserts..... that's 2 much food!!!!! =) But seriously, even with 4 of us, that was a lot of food to finish. Don't get me wrong, we did finish all the dishes, and even got more of 1 of them, but still. =) The food was great and the service evenly matched. The only downside was that even though we made reservations, we still had to wait about 45 minutes. But, once we sat down, I totally forgot about that.
Pros: Big portions of good food, Friendly service
Cons: Crowded, long wait time
This was my first at Maggiano's and I have to say, I was impressed. We went at a busy time during lunch and they still had good service. Some snobby hostess but nothing that gets in the way. The waiters are cute, food is great and also VERY large portions, espicially if you are smaller in size, price was decent. The atmosphere can be very romantic and at the same time a good place for kids.
Pros: Good food, Nice waiters, Price
Cons: seating
Ambience was very nice. Food was good, and the value was descent. I had the family style which is pretty much all you can eat. The pizza was good, as was the salad, but let's focus on the dessert. Tiramisu. Excellent. Now the only reason why i'm rating this below avg is because the service and experience I had was less to be desired. Knowing that I will go back. If I receive better service, I will readjust my rating accordingly.
I have been here several times now. The food is consistently good, but the service is completely hit or miss. This last time, our waiter was wonderful. But can they PLEASE replace their entire host/hostess staff as they always completely rude. Hello, you are a chain restuarant - lost the 'tude. I won't be coming here again. There are way too many other restaurant out there to hand over my money to someone who doesn't value me as a customer.
Pros: good food, good for sharing
Cons: host stand rude, lots of attitude
i took my boyfriend there for his b-day, and it was terrific, they were very helpful in making the reservations (even though they were all booked up), great when i called and told them we were stuck in traffic, very very very good service...our waitress was doing a great job, considering she was very busy, great food, one of my new fav. restaurants, i love going an overall WONDERFUL experience =)
Pros: EVERYTHING
The food here is not bad, but it isn't great either. I do not understand the crowd outside of this restaurant all the time. The food is just NOT that good. Plain and mediocre are the best words to describe it. I tried the chicken sandwich, soup, and pastas and none of them were special. The staff is nice and I like the casual atmosphere though. Maggiano's is just another disgusting Santana Row restaurant (except for Pizza Antica).
Pros: pretty, location
Cons: food
Service is spotty and can be good, but you are taking your chances. The food is mediocre and not anything special, not bad, but nothing to write home about. Value as cost is fair, but, once again, nothing great. There are better Italian restaurants in the area for the price and experience.
Pros: Are there any?
Cons: Parking can be tough
I went here for the second time last week to celebrate a good friends birthday and we were all happy with the generous portions of delicious food and the friendly service. Because we ordered the family meal ($16.50 per person), we got to ask for seconds and they were really nice about bringing more to the table. The tiramisu was just great light and very flavorful. We left happy about our meal and we had lots of leftovers to bring home for dinner!
Pros: food, service, left-overs
overwhelming portions and great food. You'll get great service if you go a little earlier and not at the peak of friday/sat night. But even at those times, service is not horrible.
Definitely make reservations.
This is the best ITALIAN food on the planet! Dishes are large enough to share and service is friendly. Lunch specials daily. Weekend dinner reservations highly recommended for 4 or more only. EVERYONE SHOULD EAT HERE! If you don't order the meat lasagna you are missing out! MMM GOOD!
I have tried to make reservations, but they seem to be a little too busy to handle their phones in a professional manner. And this is coming from a person that has lived in NYC for 8 years. I won't eat here even if it was free.
Pros: Wouldn't know
Cons: service
I love this place! The mood, the service, the nice location, the choices of entrees, and of course the amazing food. I recommend doing the family style dinner because you can try so many different things - you're bound to find something you really like. Plus you'll have left overs for the next day. I think it was worth $25 a person because of how much food you'll get - appetizer, salad, pasta, main entree, and dessert. It must be a favorite of many because it was so packed. For two people it took 1.5 to 2 hours to be seated so definitely make reservations for dinner!
Pros: live music, location, ambience
Cons: the wait for seating
I have been here numerous times and most of the entree have a good flavor but there are some I just wouldn't order because they are so bland. I definately enjoy the family style menu the most. They offer great portions at a great price. You definately need to make reservations if you don't want to be waiting indefinately. Mixed cocktails are so so.
Pros: large portions
Cons: bland flavor
My husband threw a surprise birthday party for me at this amazing place and invited some of our good friends. We had the family style dinner- and it was very good. It was a real Italian dinner with 3 courses and sides and of course we had no room in the end for the awesome dessert. The food was prepared very tastefully and the whole dining experience was terrific! Loved this place and will definitely go back again.
Pros: The ambience, The service , Food & Desserts
Great place to meet friends for a drink. Plenty loud and crowded but there are better food restaurants in Santana Row.
Maggiano's is a great place to go with friends and share the large portions of yummy food. Not really a "romantic" or special occasion place, though. The restaurant tends to get a bit noisy. Reservations highly recommended. I can never just walk in there on a weekend and expect to get seated without a 1 hour wait.
I WAS AT MY NEPHEW'S WEDDING IN SF AND SO
OUR FAMILY WENT TO SANTANA ROW FOR A VISIT.
OUR PARTY OF 8 ENDED UP AT MAGGIANO'S LITTLE
ITALY FOR LUNCH. WE WERE LUCKY TO HAVE A TABLE --- THEY TELL ME THAT YOU NEED TO BOOK A WEEK AHEAD AT LEAST. ANYWAY WE SAT DOWN TO A HEARTY MEAL AND IT WAS JUST SUPERB! NOT ONLY WILL WE GO BACK BUT WE WILL TELL THE WHOLE WORLD ABOUT IT. KEEP UP THE GOOD FOOD MAGGIANO'S --- WE ARE COMING FOR THE CLAMS; AND THE SAUCE!!
Pros: FREE PARKING, REASONABLY PRICED, GREAT FOOD
Cons: , LINE UP
Great place to hang after a meal. You need a reservation at least a week ahead for the weekends, but we eat in the bar. No reservations needed, and great entertainment including a fantastic oldies jazz singer (but she looks about 20) and amazing pianist. Too bad they stop at 10.
Pros: easy parking
This is my favorite Italian restaurant in San Jose! I always feel at home here. I just love it.
Pros: Staff, Ambience, Great Food
Cons: need reservations
We went here last night for our anniversary. The food was good. The only complaint that I have is with the rude, snotty maitre'd. First off, when we sat down in our booth, there was some food left on the chair/booth by the previous patrons. I asked the maitre'd as he walked by if he could get someone to clean it up for us. He gave me a look like I was asking for too much. He then looked over at the mess, took a napkin from our table, wiped up the mess, and said, "There", and then proceeded to walk off. No apologies for the mess ... he has absolutely no idea what customer service means.
