This place wouldn't be bad on it's own, but when the caliber of restaurants in Berkeley is much higher than average, this sort of place doesn't cut it.
It's a chain and is about one peg up from the Olive Garden. They have a brunch, which may be good.
They serve wine in little tumbler cups. This isn't rustic Italian - it's just cheap and sorta insulting when you pay $8.00 a 'glass' for a little cup! It's those little things that make an already mediocre restaurant specifically not enjoyable.
For a better Italian experience in Elmwood, for my money I'd go to Trattoria la Siciliana. For *real* Italian food, Oliveto is the best.

My girlfriend and I went here to just have a casual dinner for her birthday. We didn't want to do anything over the top and we just wanted to sit down to a good dinner and have an atmosphere where we could chat. This was perfect for that. They were great in letting me try ALL their wines before I chose and the food was great. Service was awesome too, definitely recommended!

This place is great because the food has an intense flavor of fresh herbs. The portions are somewhat small in my opinion. The prices are very reasonable; a typical meal will cost around 8-10 dollars. The service is very friendly. The focus of the restaurant is Italian, and the succeed in this mission.
