I brought my Corolla into Toyota of Santa Maria's service center because my car was having trouble with either the alternator or the battery. I spent $97.40 in their service center, and the problem was never discovered, that is, without trying to get me to buy a battery that didn't need to be replaced. I was told that I would have to pay parts and labor on a battery before they could continue inspecting the alternator and the rest of the car.

I asked if there were some other way for them to test the alternator without having to charge me over $100 for a battery and labor. The service agent told me there was no other way. He also informed me that three drive belts needed to be replaced.

For the diagnostic fee, the new battery, the new alternator, and the three belts, the total was going to be approximately $650. I thought that was outrageous! So I called ToyworX, a Toyota specialty shop in Grover Beach, for a second opinion. When I explained what was going on, Daniel at ToyworX said, and I quote, ??Whoa! No way. I could get you an alternator, a battery, and some other stuff for less than that.? So, I decided to go with them.

Upon explaining to the service agent that I just can??t afford to pay that much for a battery and alternator, he tried to convince me to at least get the battery. He told me the battery was no good, that it had to be replaced any way, and that once they replace the battery, the problem might be fixed. I felt like I was being taken advantage of, so I had a tow truck take my car and me to ToyworX. It turns out that Toyota of Santa Maria's diagnostic fee ($97.40) costs more than it did for the towing and the diagnostic fee at ToyworX (total $82.00).

Within an hour of dropping off my car at ToyworX, they diagnosed that the battery was fine, they would charge it, and that it was definitely the alternator that needed replacement. I almost spent close to another $100 on a battery that didn??t need to be replaced at Toyota of Santa Maria.

Toyota & Scion of Santa Maria:
? Diagnostic
? Replace battery (unnecessarily)
? Replace alternator
? Replace three drive belts
Total: approximately $650.00

ToyworX:
? Diagnosis (applied toward work done on car)
? Charge battery
? Replace alternator
? Replace three drive belts
? Rotate tires
? Change oil
? Replace spark plugs
? Basic inspection
Total: $470.86

As an additional note, ToyworX applies the diagnostic fee to whatever work they do. Toyota of Santa Maria may apply some of it or none of it. Toyota of Santa Maria never found the problem and tried to charge me for something that didn??t need to be replaced. Toyota of Santa Maria went after my wallet and will probably never see another dollar from me again. The other service shop took care of my needs forthrightly and reasonably, and I will probably be a customer of theirs as long as I live on the Central Coast.

I appreciated the friendliness of Toyota of Santa Maria's customer service, and I respect Toyota??s history of reliability, but there are still serious improvements that need to be made in the way Toyota of Santa Maria operates.
