4 Stars: Huge portions (by travelbugg1980)

Great place for lunch or for a casual dinner with family or with a group. Food was great, portions huge! And margaritas taste as they should.... Mmm! Service was a little slow, but friendly. And once we ordered, the food did come quickly... I recommend the Blue corn enchiladas. Little pricier than some other mexican restaurants, about $15 a plate for lunch, but the portions are more than fair for what you pay. I could not finish my meal, though trust me, I tried!

4 Stars: YUM-O- But Crazy A Loud Place 4 Sure! (by Ashley L.)

Awesome place on a Friday night! Food was really good. Took a while to get in. The Enchiladas and Chips and Salsa Rocked My World! Great Tequilas selection and great mix of people! It definitely seemed like a youthful spot. I would recommend but wear your earplugs if you don't like the noise and stay away if you can't take a frisky drunk crowd.

5 Stars: The Original (by marty c.)

I have been going here for over 40 years. The menu has changed little. The courtyard atmosphere is great as is the food. In a busy area - plenty of parking available.

4 Stars: Best Margarita! (by peacefaery)

I have always been intrigued by this place from the outside and after years of walking by, finally went! It was a little more casual inside than I expected, but homey and comfortable. We were seated upstairs in a cove like part and it felt really private. I had a veggie burrito and it was the size of my head and really good!!! I think it's a great value for the money. Also, the margaritas are some of the best I've ever had!!!

4 Stars: Grab some friends a couch and a party platter! (by Christina W.)

Although the gorgeous waitresses sport some of the most UNflattering ruffles, the atmosphere, service, cuisine, and size will provide for you and your party the perfect watering hole complete with comfy couches, pomegranete margaritas, and a sampler platter that you can grub on with at least 3 others and still feel full. Stop in after work and meet some co-workers or old friends and yeah, you can catch the game if that is what you're into.

4 Stars: Better than I thought (by foodie114)

I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but I enjoyed my trip to El Cholo. The restaurant is homey and comfortable. The tables are private and the restaurant is very well decorated. The food was really good and our waitress was very nice!

4 Stars: Best Margaritas In Town (by Emilda C.)

El Cholo has been around for years and with so much competition, it is not hard to figure out why it is still one of the best in L.A. I love its select menu, but the Margaritas are the bomb!

I also love their melt in your mouth tamales. It is still one of my favorites for family gathering.

1 Stars: HORRENDOUS FOOD (by nena5941)

The food is horrendous! I am Mexican and I love our food; everyone talks about this place but the food is awful. It is tasteless, no zest! It is nowhere in being authentic. I had a TACO and I hated it that I ordered the burrito and that was worse. I packed away both items and threw them out when I got home. The drinks are another thing though, they were great, but in that case just stay at the bar, drinking and eating chips and if you drink enough then order their watery guacamole. DO not go to this place, stay home and save money unless you want a good drink.

4 Stars: Consistently good food and drink at a fair price (by MXC)

Okay, I've read some of the reviews here -- several made me angry -- so I'm throwing in my '2 cents':
I have to laugh at people who trash El Cholo after apparently just one visit. This means that they
completely discount the place based on one item on the menu that they hated. Now, I've been going
to El Cholo restaurants for years at several locations: Santa Monica, L.A., Whittier, and one or two
that no longer exists -- one being The South of Santa Fe down in Orange County somewhere, which was part of the El Cholo famly chain and pretty much served the same menu. I've sampled a variety of items on their menu -- very consistent in taste from location to location -- and some are fantastic and others are so-so. In other words, it's like every other restaurant that ever served up a meal. Sure, if you're from Mexico, I doubt very much that the food will remind you of your homeland, and you can probably buy a more accurate representation of a taco or burrito from your local taco truck, but I really don't think that is what El Cholo is all about. It's good to great food with a Anglo/Mex theme. Nice decor with friendly people working there, a great cantina with great drinks and fair prices that won't break you at the bank. The only criticism that I have to offer is that their margaritas are not as good as they once were -- which makes me believe that they might be cutting corners where the actual alcoholic content is concerned. Still good, but they were once the best; no more. They also used to have a 'bottomless margarita Sunday brunch' which was absolutely amazing. A ton of food -- all you can eat including huge shrimp -- and as much margarita that you could stagger away with; all for about $11.95 ! Those days are gone forever, unfortunately.

5 Stars: Mexican food traditions with an LA Twist (by Janell W.)

The food at El Chollo is awesome. It's an old school authentic look with the staff dressed accordingly. Noisy and fun. The Margaritas are signature and the bar area is usually happening during Hapy Hour. Fall in and grab the 7-Layer dip, you'll be pleased that you did!

3 Stars: It's very interesting ....... (by RichM7564)

how or why people rated this place high. Yeah the guacamole was tasty and so was every thing else....... but..... to me and my wife, we thought this place and the food was pretty much standard ordinary, and yes, we've had better. Nothing here at El Chollo really jumped out at us. The decor looked like any other mexican restaurant we've been to. In a nutshell, this place was O.K., nothing spectacular. And quite frankly, we don't critique restaurants by their Margaritas. We had beers, basically because I saw others with their Margaritas and they looked a little puny. I like things that are BIG & BOLD! So needless to say, we'll continue on our trek for the ultimate mexican restaurant. Please remember, all these remarks are only our honest opinions...... Cheers!

4 Stars: Mexican Restaurant (by Elizabeth G.)

El Cholo was a destination of a company dinner. We had a great time and everyone, I think over 20 of us had great food. There were no complaints and it was quiet when the food came, which means everyone is eating and happy. Of course the drinks were just as good.

4 Stars: Dependable, great for a family dinner (by Kathy W.)

I have been going to El Cholo for over 20 years. The atmosphere is pleasant and the staff is very friendly. You're not going to find unique Mexican food here (i.e. menudo) but you will find Gringo-friendly Mexican food - something the whole family can enjoy without heartburn. There is valet parking, but that fills up fast. This is a perfect place to bring out of town guests. Try the margaritas! If you need a little more spice, ask for a side of jalapenos!

4 Stars: Authentic and fun atmosphere, great drinks (by bittabite)

I definitely like this location over the other one in santa monica. It feels more authentic in that particular neighborhood, but of course all the waiters are in their formal mexican ware no matter what. Its a fun, relaxed atmosphere, the food is great but the drinks are excellent. Many would agree they are so good, on my way out of the restaurant I saw an older lady about 60 or so laying on the walkway (just a little too many drinks for her). So needless to say, they have tasty and strong margaritas.

A really fun place to go!! I loved the decor. Service was good. I liked my fajitas & My margarita was just fine. Food could've been more authentic for my taste, maybe more spices. But this place is a good bet :) I enjoyed it.
2 Stars: So much potential to improve its fare (by deejain)

I visited the restaurant today in a big group and was so dissapointed with the overall food. The salsa that they serve along with the chips came straight from a can or a supermart carton. Infact the tomato sauce on my Chile Relleno as well was sour and tasted so out of the bottle. The greens on the side were wilted and the side of refired beans was ordinary.

So what is the use of all the nice authentic ambience, if the food does not match the place?

3 Stars: DO NOT VALET HERE! (by phun34)

I had a fun time at happy hour last Friday, 12/15. Hanging out with a few people I met from jury duty. The margaritas were good, not strong. The appetizers were awesome. Chips and salsa baby! However, my experience with the valet service sucked donkey s**t! I hate valeting, but there were no parking around the area. For some odd reason, I had a feeling that this experience would be bad. Sure enough, when I got into my car and drove out of the driveway, I noticed a dollar bill on floor of my passenger side. I knew exactly what happened. I immediately checked my ashtray to see if my dollar bills were there. Not to my surprise, it was not. I normally keep around 4 singles in the ashtray. They were there when i valeted, but they were gone when I left the restaurant. Well, they managed to goof the hijack when they dropped one single. I can't believe that load of crock. I didn't bother to go back because it's my words against theirs. So, screw it. I'm not coming back for sure. So, a lesson was learned. DO NOT VALET HERE!!! THEY'LL JACK WHATEVER CHANGE YOU HAVE IN YOUR CAR!

5 Stars: I Don't Care If It's Not Authentic -- It's Delicious (by niftee01)

Regardless of the fight over its authenticity, all I know is that El Cholo's food is always fresh, savory and delicious. Their free starter of freshly fried tortilla chips and slightly spicy salsa will leave a film of oil along the roof of your mouth -- but you'll keep eating, it's that good. The guacamole is yummy, as are the cheese enchiladas, flautas, fajitas. I love the melted cheese over my refried beans and rice sides! People go crazy for the tamales they only have for a limited time one season of the year, but I'm not really a fan. Regardless...the best margaritas I've ever tried. And of course, this is THE place to go if you're a USC student with ID: Half off entrees M-Th after 4 p.m.

4 Stars: Green Corn Tamales to die for! (by abrown922)

The food here is consistently excellent. The green corn tamales are so delicious. You can tell that they are made out of fresh corn. They are definitely worth a try. THe drinks are strong. I especially like their strawberry margarita. I have only been disappointed once (with the sangria). Also, I am not a fan of the valet parking but you really have no other choice.

5 Stars: Consistently excellent and worth the wait (by alisonkramer)

I've been here several times in the last few years, and every time its the same story. The waits are SO long that by the time I am seated I question whether or not ANY meal is worth it. But, without fail, the food is sensational and scrumptious and never disappoints. The prices are somewhat high considering the going rate for tacos in Los Angeles, but the portion size plus the careful attention to details and flavors make it worth the time and money.

5 Stars: My favorite Mexican restaurant in L.A. (by julesf402)

I live near this El Cholo location, and I eat here a few times a month. I think their margaritas are the best. I love their chips and salsa. I've had things on the menu that I didn't care for, but I love the shrimp fajitas. All of their enchiladas are the bomb. I think it is way better than all the other Mexican food I've eaten in L.A. I always bring friends visiting from out of town. I don't know anyone that likes Mexican food that doesn't love El Cholo.

2 Stars: Worst Mexican food place ever (by jessikasi)

This is the worst mexican food restaurant i've ever been to. The food is extremely salty, the customer service is awful and the menu is very limited. I was served cold food on several occasions and all their items are overpriced. If you want to go to a restaurant just to sit and have a beer, this is the place to go... they can't mess up that order. Everything else is awful.

I went to El Cholo because all of my friends had good things to say about their food. I was extremely disappointed to find that their food tastes like four day old wannabe Mexican food. Noting beats the mom and pop real Mexican restaurants where everything tastes fresh. I wouldnt recommend El Cholo to anyone who wants to eat real Mexican food. I dont see what all the fuss is about. The only thing thats good is their alcoholic beverages.

5 Stars: Good Food - Great Margaritas (by ginaraetx)

Their food is traditional Mexican food - better than any other place around. But you don't have to go to LA to experience El Cholo. Being born and raised in So. Cal. I have been eating at El Cholo in La Habra on Whittier Blvd. since I was little. I suggest the traditional rolled Tacos. They are the best. And the Margaritas ain't bad either!

El Cholo is my absolute favorite restaurant in El Cholo. Not only is the food rediculously good (I wait all year for it to turn May 1 so I can order the green corn tamales) but the margaritas are wonderful and strong. I try to come here at least once a month. Yes, the only downside is that the booths are kinda stiff, so I usually sit on the patio.

5 Stars: Authentic Mexican Fare (by Steven P.)

For those times when I want the real thing, I travel to El Cholo of Hollywood, far and away my favorite Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. Even though there are branches in Pasadena and Santa Monica, it just doesn't seem as tasty or authentic as in the original location. The bar is always hopping with margaritas that always get raves. The fajitas are outstanding and come sizzling enough to fog up your glasses. The chips and salsa served prior to the meal are extremely addicting, beware! But far and away, my favorite is the green corn tamale, served seasonal in midyear. I always go in the summer for my birthday and am never disappointed at these sweet treats which I douse with sour cream. Yum. And just when you're so full you think you can't eat anything else, a sinful praline comes along with your check (maybe they want you sugared out before you see the bill which isn't necessarily cheap -- but worth it). I always take out of towners to El Cholo and they always come back wanting to go again. It's

4 Stars: If you like to chat after you eat... (by ms coco love)

If you like long chats after you eat, nursing your favorite beverage, then El Cholo is the spot!

They don't pressure you, or make you adhere to the unspoken 45 minutes from seating to clearing the plates away thing. One of my companions said it reminded her of being in France, where a meal is an experience of conversation and cuisine.

I had Annie's Early California Enchilada: a tasty veggie medley of spinach, onions and zucchini smothered in a lovely corn sauce and Jack Cheese. The black beans and Spanish rice were nice too.

Recommendation: Females well endowed with "bodily accessories," SHOULD NOT GET A BOOTH. They are most unforgiving, and very uncomfortable.

Lastly, the valet parking was not free for us between 11 and 3. Maybe it's because we ended up staying for 4 hours, talking and laughing as servers carrying sizzling hot plates of fajitas whizzed by

I don't understand how it can be considered an institution, since it has been open for so long. As A mexican, I am embarrassed that people are being told that this is good mexican food.

I've been twice so far to the El Cholo on Western and both times I've been very pleased with my food. I've had the enhilada/relleno combo and the fajitas and they were both very good and came in generous sized portions. Also, my family is vegetarian and El Cholo has a good selection beyond just the cheese enchilada/chile relleno. The margaritas were good & strong too. The only questionable aspect might be the service. It wasn't blatantly horrible but sometimes you do find yourself craning your neck looking for your waiter/-ess.

I've been to El Cholo a couple of times, and I have also had their famous green corn tamales. They were great, a little heavy on the cheese, but the flavors were still very robust and authentic.

This restaurant is an example of how simple mexican food can be very good. I don't want to overrate it though, it's not "a must" if you're in LA- but somewhere to check out.

4 Stars: Not THE best margarita, but close (by gwangipal)

El Cholo's margaritas have gone through at least 3 significant changes over the decades. Their early (50s-70s) versions were an outstanding blender version (I think the first to actually use an electric blender). Superb. Then they went through some changes. The new ones are tasty, but weak, usually served over "small" rocks (the early blended versions tended to sedimentize, which was okay; when they stopped putting real dried egg whites in and started using a commercial frother they tasted like soap).

well, im just wondering how this place made it to the top 10 MEXICAN FOOD RESTAURANTS. This place is only good for drinks, nothing else. so this place should be under 10 best places to drink. the food is tasteless, overpriced.

4 Stars: Great food, poor service! (by trojan2000)

The food was wonderful but everytime I've gone, whether in a large or small group, the service has been lousy. One time, the waiter went around the whole table askin for drink orders and then skipped my husband & myself! And despite the wonderful food, the prices don't necessarily match the quality.

1 Stars: what a bunch of crap!! (by badkitty1605)

i had a very bad experience here about a year ago..and decided to give it another chance. boy was that stupid! once again the service was lousy, i sat for 20 mins with no water, and the waiter and bus boys walked past atleast 5 times ignoring my calls. the salsa was good, but the chips had an odd, stale-recooked flavor. by the end of the meal i was nauseaus and couldnt wait to leave. next time i'll stick to my 1st experiences...this is not authentic mexican food at any level...the only thing authentic about it are the names. i'd rather eat at taco bell...blah.

1 Stars: HORRIBLY HORRIBLE!! (by fairytalefromhell)

MAN!! we went here for a birthday party for my mother, only to be extremely disappointed. there were 15 of us, and we got one little thing of chips and salsa...which came before the water i might mention. we then waited for FORTY minutes for our water. the waiter kept coming out of the kitchen and looking at our table...all the while ignoring the waves and calls, only to walk away. tho the party of 20 next to us who came after us had already gotten water, drinks from the bar and appetizers. it took going to the mgr to get help. and last of all to really ruin it, they forgot to sing happy b'day to my mother, completely ruining the whole experience alltogether. i wouldnt go here again if i was drugged, beaten, tied up and dgragged in.

Margs are okay..Won't be going back.

El Cholo has excellent food and decent prices. Unfortunately, the service has been consistently poor. On one memorable occasion, the waitress spilled an entire marguerita on my new dress without even apologizing. Clearly, the wait-staff need some retraining.

3 Stars: way overrated (by gbarn666)

although the building may be historic, the food is horribly bland. Nachos? Chips with melted cheese on top. dishes come with generic "spanish" rice and flavorless refried beans. I had the carnitas plate, which was so laced with fat, it was virtually inedible. Save your time, (always a loooong wait) and your money, and head to any other great mexican food houses (which there are plenty) in Los Angeles.

I've tried El Cholo's about 4 times now, and I really don't understand the hype that this restaurant has. It's just a bit better than El Torito's and that's not saying much about authentic Mexican food. Whether you order one dish or a combo, the food and the sauces taste the same. I wouldn't recommend this place, unless you like El Torito's.

We went to El Cholo following a football game with a party of 5. We ended up waiting over 2 hours to be seated (we did enjoy the margaritas but since we had to drive home the number was limited) . There are any number of Mexican restaurants that offer better food at lower prices and without the wait..

3 Stars: Service may be the only high point (by Fuegomexicano)

The service is good once you are seated down. Yet the food there is not what one can expect. Having gone there I was deeply disapointed at their soup and tacos. I didn't believe it could be called Mexican. Other than that everyone should at least go once to see what all the hype is about. Its a good place for business and family/friend environment. Just dont expect greatness in food.

1 Stars: What? This is a chile relleno?!! (by mezac)

I ordered the combination plate of a chile relleno and a beef taco. What I received was a 1 inch strip of pepper with no cheese wrapped up in egg and my taco was served on a different plate that looked like a taquito. Rice and beans were way too salty to eat. My daughter ordered a shirley temple drink and when it arrived they were so cheap it didn't even come with a cherry. I complained about the food, but they said that's how they prepare the food. Don't waste your time and money here.

5 Stars: Great Food (by psinex)

Two words...crab enchilada. The main attraction for me, but just one of the many quality entrees on the menu. The complimentary chips and salsa are better than average and the tortilla soup is delicious. If you are undecided, you can't go wrong with the sampler. If you are lucky (or in some cases unlucky), on some nights you'll catch the mariachi band. The only minuses I can think of are the cramped booth seats and service can take awhile when it gets busy. This is pretty much my favorite Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles, thusfar.

El Cholo has been a godsend for those living in Pasadena area. The bartender, Ben, will make amazing doubles for you.
4 Stars: Decent mexican fare (by chrisnrich)

Although we are fans of the Westside El Cholo, this was our first visit to the Western Ave branch. The atmosphere here is a bit darker and smaller than the other, but the menu and food are the same. Our only complaint on this visit was the service, as our server was slow and inattentive. However, the busperson was really on the ball, making up for most of the inattention from our waiter. El Cholo wisely focuses on standard Mexican-fare dishes such as burritos, tacos, enchiladas, etc. The chips are always cold, but the salsa is decently spicy. All entrees are prepared competently, but almost nothing really stands out as unusual or outstanding. The only possible exceptions are the corn tamales and the fajitas, which mix a wide variety of vegetables in with the plentiful meat. Still, compared to many mexican places we've visited in LA, El Cholo generally delivers.

3 Stars: Margaritas! (by izelmorena)

Why, oh why call it Mexian food. the food is a hybrid of Mexican/Californian/American food. Now, the food isn't bad at all...I mean, it's very yummy. Lunch will run ya $15-20, depending on what you order. The waitstaff is slow especially for lunch time. Margaritas are the reason to come here. They have so many kinds, all will surely put you in a pleasant mood. Very yummy by the pitcher, and a bit cheaper too! I can name half a dozen restaurants that serve authentic Mexican food, not this stuff.

Let's be clear. El Cholo does not have "the best" mexican food in town, but it does have the best drinks. I hear people all the time say that this is the best mexican food in Los Angeles. Come on! This place is best know for it's margaritas. Maybe too many people are too f'd to realize that the food is fair. Think it's a bit greasy, but they do have some strong plates. It is a great place to get together and drink it up.

El Cholo food can be quite good and the Marguritas are terrific. The problem is that things go down hill when this very large restaurant is crowded. I advise arriving early, or avoid the weekend. The green corn tamalies are always great.

4 Stars: Soooo much food (by ou812sammy)

The food at El Cholo is pretty good. I like to have the Chicken Chimis. They are great and are alot of food to eat with rice and beans. The other food I tried is pretty good but not the best I have ever had.

3 Stars: What's the big deal? (by ratfink)

It's not INCREDIBLE!!!. Nor is the atmosphere AMAZING!!!!!.

It's nice, fun and the food is good. It's also a bit more expensive than a lunch should be. And the "world famour margeritas" are nothing more than expensive margeritas. They'll get you sloshed but so will a bottle of Boon's Farm.

For my daily mexican fix I'll stick with the simple and authentic. Someplace like Romero's is much more my style.

4 Stars: Green corn tamales rock! (by dussellrott)

The green corn tamales and chili relleno here are real good! The green corn tamales are a little on the sweet side, but still delicious. They have a margarita here called the 24 Kt. Margarita that costs $24. One sip and you'll know why it's so damn expensive!

4 Stars: El Mediocoro (by EricRorer)

Yeah, this place is a mainstay in the LA restaurant scene, but the truth is, it's just not that good. Well, at least the food is not that good. The atmosphere is a lot of fun, with the labyrinth of rooms and the friendly waiters. But the food is fair to midland, no real spice to it, and certainly nothing original.
