"...this 'true institution' continues to produce 'green corn tamales straight from heaven' and the 'best, strongest margaritas in LA' after over 75 years 'these guys have got it down!'...." - Zagat Restaurant Guide

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
Low ceilings and exposed wood beams crown this venerable family-owned restaurant, with vintage photos of L.A. and memorabilia lining the colorful walls. High-back booths fill the dining rooms, and comfy sofas are strewn throughout the spacious bar. Gas-lit fireplaces add cozy ambiance while servers in traditional Mexican garb treat devoted customers like family. This Mexican fare has changed little since 1927. To start, a bowl brimming of freshly made guacamole is best with the obligatory warm chips. On the lighter side, the tostadita features a mound of shredded lettuce, black beans, fresh peas, avocado and tender, grilled chicken pouring out of a crispy flour shell. Otherwise, food is hearty and heavy: Bacon adds smoky flavor to grilled sirloin tacos, and chicken-filled blue corn enchiladas are doused in thick tomatillo sauce. The Taste of History combo tours house favorites like cheese enchiladas with slightly spicy red sauce and the ultra-puffy chili relleno.

Key Points

  • Delivery/Take Out
  • Full bar
  • An LA tradition

The Inside Scoop

  1. Parking - Valet is free, Monday through Friday, from 11am to 3pm, and costs only $3 any other time.
  2. What to Drink - The margaritas are famous, but the L.A. Lemonade is a deliciously tart concoction made with three kinds of tequila and Cointreau.
  3. Delivery - You can get food delivered by calling L.A. Bite at (310) 441-2483, but you'll pay a delivery fee. For takeout, call the restaurant to order.

chic and classic, all in one

by dodaughtry

What's great about El Cholo is that right next to the hipster waiting to get his green corn tamale, thee is a Latino family just waiting to get some good cooking at a decent price.

I didn't like this place. The food wasn't very good and the service was terrible! We had to get up and ask someone to bring us refills on our drinks and I didn't like the tortilla chips.

Pros: neat atmosphere, good salsa

Cons: service, food

Margaritas!

by izelmorena

Why, oh why call it Mexian food. the food is a hybrid of Mexican/Californian/American food. Now, the food isn't bad at all...I mean, it's very yummy. Lunch will run ya $15-20, depending on what you order. The waitstaff is slow especially for lunch time. Margaritas are the reason to come here. They have so many kinds, all will surely put you in a pleasant mood. Very yummy by the pitcher, and a bit cheaper too! I can name half a dozen restaurants that serve authentic Mexican food, not this stuff.

Pros: Margaritas

Cons: Mediocre Food, Slow Service

don't get it twisted ...

by geemoney

Let's be clear. El Cholo does not have "the best" mexican food in town, but it does have the best drinks. I hear people all the time say that this is the best mexican food in Los Angeles. Come on! This place is best know for it's margaritas. Maybe too many people are too f'd to realize that the food is fair. Think it's a bit greasy, but they do have some strong plates. It is a great place to get together and drink it up. Let's be real and keep it real.

Pros: drinks, cool hang out, margaritaville

Cons: greasy

Pretty good

by bbagel

They have pretty good Mexican food. I am not crazy about Mexican food, but the chicken chimichanga was delicious. The server was very friendly and accomodating, so service was very good. Portions are quite large.

Excellent Mexican Food!

by cyi

I have been to this restaurant only twice but in both occassions I had a great time. Food is excellent and ambience is great. What more can you ask for. Try their chicken burrito and their margaritas. You will want to come back.

Food - lousy, margaritas good.

by dilbert

That's all you really need to remember about El Cholo. Go there with a group for happy hour and enjoy the margaritas, then leave and go someplace else for dinner.

This place is ok, just ok.

by Bert

I do mean ok, just ok. The food wasn't all that I thought it was going to be. I want here for my Birthday, was not impressed. However the mix drinks were excellent. THe service was good. I do agree with voting them the best Margarita's in Los Angels. But that's about all.

I don't get it

by ginac

Not sure where this place got the reputation as a LA landmark. My 3 month old niece screamed every time we tried to bring her inside and I think she has the right idea. The decor is nice, but the staff was surly and the food was bad. No need to go deep into a sketchy nieghborhood for this one.

Pros: big

Cons: nieghborhood, salsa weak, loud

Avoid the Rush

by kentv

El Cholo food can be quite good and the Marguritas are terrific. The problem is that things go down hill when this very large restaurant is crowded. I advise arriving early, or avoid the weekend. The green corn tamalies are always great.

Pros: Good Food, Friendly Ambiance/bar, Marguritas

Cons: Can be too Busy, Often a jammed Bar

Soooo much food

by ou812sammy

The food at El Cholo is pretty good. I like to have the Chicken Chimis. They are great and are alot of food to eat with rice and beans. The other food I tried is pretty good but not the best I have ever had.

Pros: Lots of food, good salsa

Cons: ok service

What's the big deal?

by ratfink

It's not INCREDIBLE!!!. Nor is the atmosphere AMAZING!!!!!.

It's nice, fun and the food is good. It's also a bit more expensive than a lunch should be. And the "world famour margeritas" are nothing more than expensive margeritas. They'll get you sloshed but so will a bottle of Boon's Farm.

For my daily mexican fix I'll stick with the simple and authentic. Someplace like Romero's is much more my style.

Green corn tamales rock!

by dussellrott

The green corn tamales and chili relleno here are real good! The green corn tamales are a little on the sweet side, but still delicious. They have a margarita here called the 24 Kt. Margarita that costs $24. One sip and you'll know why it's so damn expensive!

El Mediocoro

by EricRorer

Yeah, this place is a mainstay in the LA restaurant scene, but the truth is, it's just not that good. Well, at least the food is not that good. The atmosphere is a lot of fun, with the labyrinth of rooms and the friendly waiters. But the food is fair to midland, no real spice to it, and certainly nothing original.

Pros: Atmosphere

Cons: Food, Lines
