Clearman's Steak 'N Stein

by Joann V. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,126

This place looks like a cabin in the mountains, but a reall good restaurant. The steak was delious, along with the coleslaw salad. I've always had really friendly waiters and great service.

Steaks and 1 lb Baked Potatoes

by Nancy K. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 306

Go hungry! The portions are huge. Salad is served family style. The cheese bread is to die for. I have never had a bad steak here and I have been eating here more than 30 years. One of the best places to go for a steak.

Food: only OK, Service: so so. This place is only AVERAGE.

by Anonymous

We have been here a few times and give it only an average rating. FOOD: Good portion size, but only a very average quality/taste. I had a steak and it was loaded with fat, same for my son and daughter - steaks loaded with fat. The green salads and cabbage salads are good. SERVICE: so so I hate to say. Waiters act like its an upscale place and generally give less than average service. DECOR: like a cabin in the north woods, but a cabin that needs cleaning. You throw your peanut shells on the floor - kinda unique. RESTROOMS: Not Clean and Smell Bad - that says a lot about a place. PARKING: Better park in their parking lot because the restaurant is in a bad area.

simply the best

by Rosalie B. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 894

This place look s like a lodge up in the mountains, it even has a faux snow covered roof! The inside is all log cabin type and wonderful. Their staff is friendly and attentive. Their food is simply the best. They also have the best red cabbage and coleslaw salads around. You won't be dissapointed with this place.

Never have been disappointed!

by michaelsvm

I remember going to Clearman's since I was kid, and the ambiance is just as impressive NOW as was THEN!! I ate here recently, and the steaks were perfect, and its always nice to have some tableside service. THey prepare your salad tableside, your steak comes on a flaming lil cart, they prepare your baked potato to your liking, right in front of you, its just a great place, and also romantic, with the dim red lighting. Its location is a little obscure (right behind a 99 cent Store) but DON'T BE DISCOURGAGED, this place is real GEM!!! the wait staff has always made us feel as if we were the only one's eating there, always taking care of us really well!!

Pros: Ambience, Parking, Great Food,

Cons: it's a steak house, so its gonna be pricey, but totally worth it

Excellent Resturant

by tomeldridge

I have been going there for over 33 years! I have never had a bad meal or bad service in over 33 years, We go there once a month from O.C. The Fillet and Halibuit are remarkable. We compare all meals at nice resturants to this resturant and we realize that Clearman's has the best value and quality around. The service is excellent and worthwhile. We have never thought much of their bar or not taking reservations. But the wait is worthwhile. The food is awesome!! Highly recommended from a true customer who goes there a tremendous amount of times in over 33 years. Worth the drive and wait to eat their food.

Pros: Fillet, Halibuit, Potatoes, Sour Crm, Chives Dres

Cons: Bar, No reservations

We went to Steak N' Stein for the first time in years. The ambience is still very nice, but they don't take reservations so we had to listen to an infant in our waiting area scream bloody murder for 45 minutes. The steaks, although ordered medium rare, were beyond well done (no pink) and dry; but we were never able to convey this because once the server brought our meals, he never checked on us until ready to present our bill. Even though we asked for a take-out bag, the server proceeded to pile other dirty plates on top of our plates containing our leftovers and then began shifting dirty plates around looking for ours (for health reasons, we told him to forget it). A very disappointing experience and we will never return. We wrote to the owners to share our experience with them, but they just brushed us off.

Impressive!

by choirbywdy

My wife and I came here for our anniversary and were very impressed. Dimly lit and very romantic. Everything was perfect from the cheese bread to the gigantic potatoes to the steak itself! And the service was superb.

Pros: Freeway close, Easy parking, Dimly lit

Must Try at least Once

by tattoo

Don't let the location prevent you from stopping by. Steak N Stein is located on Whittier Blvd. (notorious for cruising in the past), but definitely worth visiting. The everything is of the highest quality, from the croutons to the cheesebead. Enormous potatoes with optional onion dip and cheese sauce. Delicious!!

Pros: Delicious Food, Good Service, Freeway Close

Epitomizes the best. The atmosphere is excellent. Great food, service, and value. Low lighting set a ambience that harkens back to old L.A. Its another world inside, allowing you to enjoy a great meal and a good drink from the bar.

Great Atmosphere & Food

by gixxerbb

I found this restaurant based on the reviews from this website, and I wasn't dissapointed. The whole restaurant is dimly lighted in red, making you feel like you are back in time. The steak was not perfect, but definitely one of the top for that price. The baked potatoe was excellent, very creamy and full of flavors. The portions are big and the service was great. I would definitely go back again!

Pros: Good parking, Good food for price

Cons: No reservations

This Place is Awesome!

by City_Girl71

It reminds me of an old steakhouse, I felt like I went back in time. The service was amazing. The food is great, it is a nice break from all the trendy cuisine that's available. The garlic bread is the best I've ever had.

Pros: Price, Parking, Service

Family of 4

by Cinnabon2

The 4 of us went there on 8/2/02. Normally we go to Northwoods but wanted an upscale place for a birthday celebration. This was the right place. We all had beef, steak or prime rib, lobster and shrimp. The bread is delicious. the potatoes were amazing tender and drenched in butter. The steaks were so tender you could cut them with a fork. Service was very good, overall food was good but pricey

Pros: Good value, Good Parking

Cons: Dim Lighting
