Taka hair salon opened in 1997 on the heavily Japanese-influenced Sawtelle Boulevard. The stylists are known for their specialty in Japanese thermal hair straightening, but that's not all they offer. Services include everything from hair cut, color, hair extensions, dreadlocks, conditioning treatments and eyelash perm to waxing and perms. Stylists are well trained and have won many prizes in hair shows. The salon was chosen as one of the top 12 salons to receive advance training personally from Yuko Yamashita, the founder of the Yuko System and the inventor of thermal straightening. They have researched all kinds of Japanese thermal straightening and offer different treatments based on your hair's needs. We are chosen for the best of citysearch in Japanese Thermal Straightening and in hair salon.

Ratings_icons Best Haircut!!

Jessica K. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,671

If you want a stylish haircut, or any type of haircut for that matter, go here!!! I'm not going to lie, it is a little pricey though.. an average hair cut for women is $60 and then $50 for men, but you definitely get what you pay for!

My favorite hair stylists are Maki and Kiyoko. They have great senses of hair styles and they have a great judgement. If they think that something is going to look bad on you, they will be honest with you and tell you.

Overall great service, and great people!! :)

Ratings_icons The best hair cut

I have been to many salons before and I never seen the way they cut. I don't know what it is, but their cut makes my hair not only easy to take care but also so beautiful. All the stylists at Taka Hair Salon have over 10 years experience and they are so good. My friends recommend me to go Taka Hair Salon and all my friends love their hair cut. I love my hair.

This is a hair salon in the Japanese enclave on Sawtelle. We found it by accident several years ago and have not gone anywhere else since. The hairdressers are very good. A men's haircut is around $35 or so and includes a scalp massage. For that they will spend 45 minutes to an hour on your hair.

Does it get any better than this?! No, it does not. I went to get my hair relaxed a few weeks ago using the Keratin treatment and I have been raving about it ever since. I have extremely, extremely curly hair (ringlets) and it is very time consuming to dry and style it every day. However, I was a little hesitant to get the Japanese thermal straightening, which they also do here, because I like having body in my hair. I went for a free consultation and they were very helpful and not at all pushy. They suggested doing Keratin, which is a semi-permanent relaxer that holds for about 3 months and it still leaves body in your hair. It's also better when your natural curls start to regrow at the roots. It blends better than the Japanese thermal straightening. They also told me in my consultation that it would take about 3 hours. I went back the following weekend and Ken did my hair. He was super nice and kept asking me if he could get me anything, if I was comfortable through the whole process and what I especially appreciated was that he did the treatment in exactly 3 hours on the dot. He recommended products to use and also explained what ingredients I should avoid in shampoo in case I wanted to buy products elsewhere. Now my hair is easy to manage, super shiny and feels so much healthier. If you have ever considered Japanese straightening or Keratin GO HERE!! And if all of this wasn't perfect enough .. THEY ACTUALLY HAVE PARKING. Thank you Taka! I'll see you in Feb. for my next Keratin treatment.

Pros: friendly, professional staff; keratin treatment!

Cons: none whatsoever

Ratings_icons my fave salon!

nabiya

i wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair! i usually request kiyoko and she's fantastic! on a couple occasions i've had different stylists and i have always been happy with my experience. they are really meticulous and i love that they don't try and sell me products. i actually end up picking up a few things anyway :) they have bumble and bumble and this one japanese shampoo that's great for people like me who insist on washing their hair everyday. they also have different promotions and specials each month that are worth checking out.

Pros: took a picture of a hair style that i wanted to try and they adjusted it to work with my hair type, looks great!

Cons: expensive but it's worth it

Ratings_icons BEST SALON IN LA!!!!

Ellieburke

I have been looking for a good hair salon for a long time and I finally found it. The salon is so clean and what a great atmosphere! The hair stylists are meticulous and they really know their stuff. The girl that did my hair cut and color did EXACTLY! what I wanted and did above and beyond an amazing job. The salon is in sawtelle the heavily Japanese area, I am of mixed race half Japanese and half white so I have very difficult hair. They were great! I was afraid they would only know how to handle Japanese hair but they did an amazing job. There is also a bit of a language barrier that makes it kind of awkward at first but you get really comfortable really quickly and everyone is really nice and sweet. It was a little more expensive than I thought it would be but totally worth it and I will be a repeat customer! I am going back in 2 weeks for the Hair straightening they are famous for!
Just a few good things to know: they prefer their tips in cash and unless you speak Japanese it is kind of quiet so bring something to read.

Pros: ambiance, air conditioned, friendly, great prices.... pretty much everything

Cons: none

Ratings_icons Excellent service and knowledgeable staff

luciacaldera

I went to Taka for a Japanese hair straightening and LOVED it.

I have a busy schedule and needed to book my straightening for the day after my consultation. Not only was the person at the front desk was able to make room for my 6-hour appointment on such short notice (!), but I got an amazing stylist who did a wonderful job on my hair. She turned my stubborn, tight curls into smooth, silky, straight hair. And she gave me an awesome haircut, too! I have NEVER been happier with my hair.

The staff is helpful, patient and meticulous. They definitely know what they're doing...Taka is simply the best!

Pros: Friendly staff, excellent service, free parking.

Cons: A bit pricey, but worth every penny.

Ratings_icons These people really know their stuff!

jbouey

They were ready for me when I arrived. The service was awesome. I went in to have my hair colored to cover up the gray and was really worried because when I had it done once before, I got to pay over two-hundred bucks for red hair that was supposed to be brown! Not only did he do a perfect job - he explained every thing beforehand. Oh - and I paid a lot less.

The atmosphere was warm and friendly. There is ample parking and it is free. Prices aren't a secret. The people were genuinely warm and they don't take shortcuts like some other places on Robertson that charge twice as much! I am sooooo happy to have found Taka Hair Salon. I will never go anywhere else!

Pros: skilled, excellent parking, more than reasonable prices, friendly staff, clean

Cons: NONE

Ratings_icons precision cuts at a great price

cdisip

finally, finally, my long, tedious search for a hair salon is over! I've gone to practically every 'hipster' salon on the eastside, and although I got good cuts, they weren't exactly what I wanted. Where, oh where, can I find the perfect Japanese-layered cut? TAKA! Maki was great, took her time, and gave me exactly what I wanted. $60 for a cut was well worth it. Although highlights were a bit on the expensive side ($80 for partial color), I am still extremely satisfied and will be coming back. my search for a salon is finally over!

After your salon visit, be sure to stop by remo next door, as well as giant robot and black market across the street.

I LOVE LOVE this salon! I will forever continue to go to Taka Hair Salon! I have hopped around from salon to salon for years, but not anymore since I found TAKA! they are the best! they really take their time to make sure they do a perfect job! They are all very friendly, the environment is open and relaxed and the prices are reasonable for the amazing service they give! They also have top of the line products! I love their YUKO line, i am using the shampoo and conditioner and they make my hair soo soft and not frizzy at all! HIGHLY recommended! I am counting the days until i can go back to get the YUKO SYSTEM done to my hair, I can't wait! they are all pros!! PARKING IN THE BACK!

Pros: They take their time with you and don't rush you!

Ratings_icons Attentive, careful service

We have been going to Taka for about six years now. We originally started going there because we lived in the neighborhood, and we have continued to go even after moving to another neighborhood. The staff are conscientious, meticulous, and really friendly. While their advertising emphasizes their more specialized services like thermal straightening, they do an excellent job on a plain old shampoo and cut. The shampoo includes a scalp massage, which is a nice touch. I'm not sure how their prices compare with other places in LA, but my impression is that whatever they charge, its a great value. I have paid a lot more for haircuts in LA and have never been as satisfied.

Ratings_icons Really attentive service from the moment you walk in the door

alreadymadeup

Having just moved, I needed to find a new salon. My old one had great stylists, but the front desk service was terrible. This place is really great! The receptionist greeted me with a big sincere smile and immediately offered to take my coat and purse. I was a little early and they offered me tea and coffee. When the stylist was ready she came over and introduced herself. She sat me in the chair and we talked about what I wanted. Shampooing also included a miniscalp massage--usually the washing is really unpleasant for me, but this was pretty relaxing. Cut was great! It took about an hour and was very decently priced, the stylist also showed me some products she used, but really wasn't very pushy at all. They had a really good promotion when I was there, so I got that for someone else, then, when I left, EVERYONE said good bye! It's mostly Japanese people. Note to singles; a lot of cute guys there. Definately going back.

Pros: really friendly staff

Cons: some art on the walls is a little kitschy
