I went to Sur to celebrate a friends birthday. The staff was very accommodating, and attentive. I wouldn't say the food was as good as their sister restaurant Villa Blanca, but I would go back again.

This place is worse than school food.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at this LA fantasy decoration romantic uptempo restaurant last night. We are well traveled and laid back South Bay people, so it was fun to enjoy the energy of this good looking restaurant. We cannot understand the negative reviews about Sur and its glamorous staff - as we received great, personable and attentive service throughout the entire evening. Maybe it's the attitude and expectations of the unhappy reviewers who create a negative experience for themselves?
We were early for our reservation, and so handed our bottle of champagne to our host who took it away to keep it chilled for us. We had a drink in the cozy little bar, listening to happy people with international accents. We could have been back in Italy, or somewhere along the Cote d'Azur. Soon we were escorted to our table in the middle dining room. Tables are packed in, but it works, as the decibel level is so high that one can easily have a private conversation without feeling that the couple next to you is listening to every word. One of the highlights of our evening was our wait person, Kristen - one of the nicest, warmest and most personable restaurant people we have ever had. She was very pretty and animated and down to earth all at the same time. She made us feel very welcome and at home. The other 2 ladies that assisted her were also very personable and friendly. Overall our food was good, with the Chilean Sea Bass absolutely outstanding. The blackberry cobbler was the other great food highlight.
We had a really nice time and will definitely go back!

I have to say I am so excited to find such a beautiful restaurant that treats guests with such gratitude and utmost respect. I took my mom here and we were both treated like princesses, with incredible service and beautiful presentation of fine dishes of exotic aromas, textures and flavors. Muy delicioso! Thank you, SUR. Will be visiting again soon! Ciao.

I usually don't write reviews online, but after my experience at SUR last night, I was compelled to do so. I had planned a very special dinner for a dear friend's Bach-ette. 10 ladies ready to celebrate and have a great time. I had been in contact with Nathalie who is in charge of private parties since I decided it would be best to have a pre-set menu. We agreed on the terms and our menus were set. Upon arriving our table was ready and very beautifully done. That's when things took a turn for the worse. According to our agreements, we were supposed to have 4 appetizers for the table to share, 1 Entree per person and 1 dessert. The food was fine. Nothing to rave about, and nothing horrible to comment on. The portions are very generous, that's a plus I guess. We ordered lots of drinks, wine, etc and were having a lovely time. THEN..... comes the bill. They charged us for the apps which was not what we agreed to. I went back and forth with a very rude manager who proceeded to tell me that I was making a mistake and that the apps were additional. Nathalie was not at the restaurant herself, so I asked the manager to call her. Once I got on the phone with her, she completely tried to make it seem like it was MY fault and that I had made a a mistake. We went back and forth for about 10 minutes and which point she said that I had misunderstood and that there was nothing she could do!!!!!! WHAT THE ##$%$#@!??? We were totally screwed and they have no idea how to run a good restaurant. The concept of having customers leave happy and satisfied means absolutely nothing to them I want to make it clear that this was not about the money. It was principle. We agreed on terms and then last minute she changed everything around. I am NEVER going back to this horrible place and I would urge anyone who is considering visiting SUR to take your business elsewhere. Not worth it at all.

Wow, Wow, Wow, By far the most amazing restaurant I have ever been to. My sister who happen to be best friends with the owners told me to go check it out. My fiance and I went and asked for the owners and they gave us an awesome table. While they were getting our table ready we had a drink at the bar.
Once at the table we had the most amazing food and the service, out of this world.
The design of the restaurant was to die for and the music was amazing.
The owners are the nicest people I have ever met.

My new husband took me there on our Wedding Day after eloping at the Beverly Hils Courthouse with our 16month old...It was beautiful the food was absolutely excellent, and the service was very nice it was surprisingly descently priced (alot less than I thought a place like that would be) Also we got there for an early dinner so there weren't too many people it was more quiet and romantic but when people did start showing up, luckily LOL they turned up the good music which was good with the little one getting ancy.

We had dinner at Sur Restaurant while on vacation recently in LA. We were fortunate enough to be seated on the patio which is really beautiful. The food was great. We had the goat cheese appetizer along with the steamed chicken and shrimp dumplings, both of which were fabulous. The server was friendly and made great recommendations including her wine choice. I would highly recommend this place.

I had heard such great such great things about Sur, that I was so looking forward to my visit. My wife and I are foodies and restaurant snobs. We went a couple weeks ago for teh first time with our friends before attending a show and we had the best time. We were seated right away and our waitress, Pandora, was so beautiful she could have been a supermodel. In fact all the waitresses were not only beautiful but genuinely nice, attentive and considerate to the fact that we had to get out of there on time. I ordered the Sea Bass which was amazing, cooked to perfection. The Pino Grigio our waitress recommended was exquisite. The dining room is absolutely beautiful. It was one of the first warm nights we were getting in Los Angeles so we sat outside. The fresh breeze , the flickering candles, and the intoxicating aroma is so magical you almost feel you are in a movie or have traveled back to some romantic time and destination. I could not wait to go back again. So we went back again tonight. The food both times was amongst the best we have had. And the desert was ourof this world. The service was friendly, warm and very professional. I will definitely come back a few times this summer and would love to try everything on the menu. The food reminds you of an authentic European restaurant ( if your mom was the Chef). Beautiful people, beautiful food, beautiful Celebrities ( we were sitting next to them). I am addicted.

A wonderful and charming bistro with good food and good attitudes from staff. While definitely popular in the gay community, my boyfriend and I were treated well and the food was excellent. Eat outside on the covered patio---nice ambience.

Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. To my surprise we were the only straight couple on the patio. The atmosphere was beautiful, the decor inside was very romantic. The sangria was the best I've ever had. Everything was great, except for the fact that they allow smoking on the "enclosed" (it had a roof and four walls) outdoor patio. Some people started smoking right when we were finishing our meal and when I asked the waiter if they were allowed to smoke there, he said "yes because it was on open patio." I wish I would've known that ahead of time so I could have eatten inside, smoke free. We quickly left after the smoking started.

Beautiful restaurant. Our waiter had a bit of an attitude which we overlooked because this place just makes you want to have a good time. The spicy shrimp soup had zero spice was lukewarm and tasted a little like Cambells. I ordered the blackened chicken entree which was fabulous but my veggies on the side were undercooked. The wild salmon entree was perfect. I would definitely go back and hopefully get a different waitress or waiter and steer clear of the soup.

it has an alarmingly-ambiatic & very hauntingly-romantic decor, w/ tons&tons of candles (& central a/c to accomodate for the excess heat emitted by all those candles) everywhere, w/ what has to be the most attractive group of wait staff we'd ever seen at any other restaurant (and we've been everywhere) in town or out of town. the food's nothing to talk about, but you go there for their killer-ambience, the choice selection of their music playing in the background (which actually heightened being there) , and to be served by their super-friendly/LA model-actor wait staff. key word: ambience!

The night started out with my girlfriend making our reservation days before, she asked for a nice table...we got anything but. The 1st table was at the entrance to the main dining room and right by a server station, no way too much traffic, so we asked to move. The next table was right near the main door (off the street, cars flying by) and the table sat at a terrible angle (sauce running almost off the plate). We felt sheepish asking for another table because we were told they were fully booked (we saw 2 other nicer tables sit unoccupied for the next half hour). Undeterred, we ordered apps. We ordered the special soup (carrot/ginger) and a lobster crab cake. We asked to have the soup split. It came out in one bowl, so we sent it back to be split. It came back out with the lobster cakes (no plate spacing). The soup was worse than the soups you can buy at trader joes and the lobster cakes (aka potato cakes for $12) were almost all bread. Our backs are starting to ache a little at this point from the table angle. We order our meal with apps on the table. Not even 5 min later my rib eye and her ahi tuna come out. How in the world can you cook a rib eye in 5 min? In shock we cram our plates on the terribly angled table with the app plates. Even our waitress is shocked at the speed of the arrival. My rib eye was half fat (not marbled - good steak house fat...pure fat), and her ahi tuna was passable but nothing special. I told my waitress that half the rib eye was fat (showed her) and she told me no one else had ever complained. Um, that didn't make my dish better so I sent it back. This time, a fillet came out (full price, more expensive than my original order) - mediocre at best. The sides were average, mash potatoes plain (no garlic, seasoning) and the carrots were barely cooked. Nowa we are laughing at how bad everything is, especially considering the terrible angle of the table and chairs (back and neck hurting now). Please save your money.

My fiance' treated me at Sur Restaurant for my birthday. First impression of the place...WOW! Beautiful setting, nice ambience. We were greeted and seated promptly. Had no problem switching us to a different table. Our server was courteous and helpful. Glasses are always filled up to the rim. Food was awesome. Very romantic. You wouldn't notice the place unless you are really looking forward to eat there. I love their red wine sangria and crispy chicken entree. Just the best...would 100% recommend the place. Next time we'll try it with group of friends.

For a truly beautiful place with a crowd of beautiful people and staff this place is very welcoming with very little attitude. I have actually come in without a reservation and been treated well. The owner seems to be there often and he really has a great friendly attitude. The food is pretty good, not fantastic but on par with a good neighborhood restaurant. Strangely, they only serve beer and wine, no mixed drinks. The music is a little on the loud side later into the night, but good music. Service is friendly and tries hard...very good-looking in skimpy outfits, not super professional but passable. Setting is very romantic.

My boyfriend and I were impressed with the decor and atmosphere as soon as we entered- but it seems like that was the highlight and everything seemed to go downhill from there. Our waitress took our appetizer/drink order and then seemed to have forgotten about us altogether, instead, tending to a larger party and taking their full order- seems odd that she would forget about us since we were the only two parties in the restaurant. The main dishes were OK- portions were a good size, however, they billed us for the wrong (more expensive) appetizer. Although a little overpriced, its worth a try if even just to enjoy a romantic atmosphere and a night out. Hopefully, your service experience won't be as bad.

My new favorite restaurant! SUR has an expansive menu with unique dishes. I had the Belgian salad and it was great! Fresh pears, caramelized pecans-YUM! A friend of mine had the Crispy Chicken and she also loved it. We finished our meal with a Pecan Pie and the Blackberry Cobbler. They were both very warm, right out of the oven and topped with what tasted like a vanilla bean ice cream. The atmosphere is very lavish and lit by candlelight. A fun place to go anytime.

I'm a very picky person only because the rest of you feel it's incorrect to expect what you pay for. In the case of SUR, I should pay them because they went so far beyond my expectations. I expected excellent, I got superb. I expected tasty, I got exquisite. I expected modest portions, I got the full deal. This restaurant operates at a standard few in my experience have even dreamed of yet alone attained. It's perfect in every single respect. The food is unreal, the ambience is --- yes, I'm going to use that word --- magical. From the moment you step inside to the moment you step out, you are transported to a rare world, one where everything is as it should be, but better. Call now, go there before it gets overrun because of reviews like mine.

What a lovely experience! Its restaurants like Sur in West Hlwd that keep people coming back for more. In over 20 years of dining out in LA, I would say that the beauty and decor of Sur ranks near the top! There's an air about the place that takes you away to some exotic, pristine tropical island and our waiter fit this bill perfectly. Sharp, smart and attractive(a combo hard to find in eateries today) he directed us to specific items on the menu and started our group of four off with some red sangria. Wow! The mixture of fruits and wine tingled our senses and got our party off on the right foot. We started with a couple of salads that we passed around the table to rave reviews: the fresh crab & lobster salad and the warm arugula w/ chicken. The crab salad was intertwined with mango and cherry tomatoes and was just mouth watering, while the arugula had a delectable sauce that we savored. As the sangria kept coming our food got better and better. Specifically, the chicken enchiladas were like no other! Served with an avocado garnish and cabbage I was thrown for a loop. They were downright tasty and should be recommended to all. Same goes for the rib-eye steak. I had longed for those days vacationing in Buenos Aires and having meat cooked to perfection. Sur was up to the challenge! Medium rare and muy delicioso! Talk about being away in a far off land and loving it! Sur restaurant was all I imagined and more. Judging by all the people clamoring to get in, Im not alone in my high praise.

The place is beautiful, but that is about as far as the experience will take you. First problem is the oversized menus which are too clumsy to be functional. When you only hire pretty servers, they may not be that smart. Our waiter was clueless, but not all the problems were his fault. Food delivery was slow and 2 dishes were not right. An appetizer came out only as a half portion but was corrected by management right away (thank you). The waiter kept telling us how they only had one person in the kitchen and he was overwhelmed. On a holiday weekend? Informative, but not my problem. When my Chicken Risotto came out chicken and rice in soup he agreed that it didn't look right and went in to a description of how it normally looks. Thanks for nothing! No attempt was made to fix it on the table or on the bill. Other's had minor problems with their food as well (party of 5). We left wondering why we paid $50 per person and were so unhappy. The wine list is limited and very expensive for what they are offering (I'm in the food and wine business).
If you want a pretty environment, go, if you want the complete package, look elsewhere.

This place is right in the area where you want to be if you want to be with all the supposed hype/trend. The food was okay, nothing too great or extraordinary. However the service was horrible. The hostess wanted to seat my party and I in a corner outside the restaurant. Then when I asked to be seated they gave us a nice table, only to tell us we could not have it becasue it was reserved for another group of people. So intead the table that I did end up with was the worst ever. People, including the staff kept hitting the back of the chairs. When the manager was notified he did nothing but want to sit us back in the corner. As for the other great table, it was empty for over two hours... and until about 5 minutes before we were leaving did the "reserved for guest" arrive.

Not only is Sur absolutely beautiful, it's food, prices & service measure up. I ate here the last week in January with 2 friends. There is a large outdoor seating area that would be delightful when the weather warm up. The inside is white & chic. There is candlelight everywhere. Each table has fresh cut flowers & candlelight. They do not serve hard alcohol. The wine list is nice. I highly recommend the sangria. We split one of the specials of the evening: crab & lobster salad. It was to die for. It was a very large salad & there was plenty of crab & lobster. I tried the soup. It was delicious. For my entree, I had the pork chop. It was succulent & cooked to the perfect temperature. I really liked that you get to pick two sides with your entree. I chose grilled vegetables & mashed potatoes. They were wonderful as well. Everything was pleasing to the eye & the pallet. I highly recommend the blackberry cobbler. Yum! We received personal attention from the owner. Sur is wonderful. Go & see for yourself!

Sur was a big surprise for my birthday. Everything on the menu looked to be a wonderful eating experience. The wine list was exquisite and tasteful. I love this restaurant. I would recommend it to everyone I know who wants a great restaurant experience.

Pros: The best restaurant so far this year.

.

I came here with 7 close friends on Friday November 17th, 2006 to celebrate my birthday, and I had such a wonderful experience. I have nothing to say but great things about this restaurant. I haven't been to this place in 3 years, and it has gotten, like many people in L.A., quite a facelift. The place is gorgeous and romantic with candlelight and white interior everywhere. This place would have made the "Fab 5" guys proud. The servers are pretty hot too! Which would also make the "Fab 5" guys proud. The host, extremely nice and welcoming. I think the place is so much classier than the circuit music playing in the background, I would love to see this place play some classical music or old school jazz, rather than the thumpin and bumpin sounds, I thought I was at the Abbey for a bit. But let's talk about the food and drink. The sangria (white or red) was delicious and potent. We shared fried calamari with a chipotle mayonnaise and hot tomato sauce as an appetizer, nothing spectacular, but it was very good. Their chopped arugula salad is really good, it came with a yummy balsamic dressing. For the entrees I had fried chicken with mashed potatoes. It was tasty! I also tried my friend's roasted filet mignon, which was also good. We then closed the night off with a sorbet dessert. It was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. But overall this was a wonderful dining experience. A great place for a romantic dinner or intimate birthday occasions. They also have a very helpful website.

The food was good, but the service was not so great, the server was obviously in a rush and was not welcoming at all, it also took a looong time to get our food and we had to ask several times just to get a glass of water. The atmosphere is "hip" as some have said, but I care more about the quality of the food and elegance of the environment, rather than the overdone decor, waiters wearing pink sequined t-shirts, and club music playing too loud in the background. I am a 20-something and I do go to clubs, but i don't want to be at a club while i'm eating dinner. So, if you're looking for tasteful dining, this is probably not the place for you.

I heard a lot about Sur (usually the best) but didn't have time to check it out myself. Well, mission accomplished: I had the best experience in a long time, last night at Sur.
First of all, the place looks absolutly fantastic, a lot of antics from all over the world, chandeliers and candles everywhere (so romantic!). Service was great : waitresses and waiters are friendly and casual. I had the best chicken ever , two big pieces in a lemon and caper sauce and my boy friend ordered the special of the night: roasted racks of lamb; he is still talking about the flavor of it!
We met the very handsome owner Guillermo who gave us a tour of the restaurant and specially showed us a private dining room. Oh, so sexyyyyy..........the dining room... I can't wait to organize my next birthday party there.

Location is great: corner of Robertson and Melrose

Oh, did I mention the white sangria ??? You HAVE to try it!!! Absolutly Delicious

Atmosphere is fabulous -- manages to be equally hip and romantic. In fact, the decor and the staff are so attractive you'll be waiting for the food to be mediocre at best. It's not. Most of the dishes we've tried from the shrimp over spinach to the sea bass to the meatloaf were expertly prepared and delicious. The servers made up for some early snafus with quick fixes and attentive service. Not a full bar last time we were there, but a bottle of wine, a beer or kir royal compliment most selections.

Food was OK, not the best, but good enough, the service was horrible. They put a plate in front of me with a piece of fish on it, as I was about to cut the first slice, someone ran out of the kitchen, grabbed the fish and said this is for someone else and went back to the kitchen. 10 minutes later, after everyone was half done, MY fish arrived. Had to ask for things a few times before getting them. The entrée prices were reasonable but all other items were so hiked up that the total bill got to be the magical $150 for 2 (1 glass of wine each).

Ate there in May. The restaurant and staff were beautiful, but the food was mediocre at best. I am writing this review because I see so many positive reviews, I don't understand how it is the same restaurant. Our server was honest and said the best thing on the menu was the risotto, which was decent but nothing special. I had the seared ahi tuna, which arrived completely cooked through. It was promptly replaced with appropriate apologies and what seemed to be a certain level of embarrassment. Although the replacement was cooked properly, it was flavorless. I heard the restaurant had recently reopened after remodeling, so maybe it was just a bad night and the kitchen was still working out the kinks--the food experience was very amateurish. I am not sure if I will try Sur again, but if the positive reviews keep coming in, I may give it a second chance in hopes that the kitchen was just beginning to get its act together. The restaurant did not have a full liquor license.

We loved the exquisit food and the hip atmosphere....yet Sur didn't have any pretentions or hyperness that is often associated with those attributes. There's a charming casualness that works in their favor. I loved the Rib eye and my partner love his filet. Yummy blackberry cobbler at the end too. The white on white interior and patio is lovely.
we'll be back!

If your answer is yes, you'll LOVE Sur. The white sangria is to die for. But, be careful, it tastes so yummy, you don't realize how much you are drinking.

The food is equally as good. My party and I shared the crab and chicken dumplings. Very good. For dinner, we shared the salmon, ahi tuna, and a dinner salad. All of it wonderful. If you have room, try the blueberry cobbler.

The wait staff is very attractive (males and females). The ambiance is perfect -- white table linens, fresh flowers, and candles. Reservations are a must. Try to get one around dusk. It's beautiful in there at night (especially on the patio). Only drawback is the restaurant faces a vet's office, so the scenery on the patio isn't that great.

Overall, great place for dinner with friends, family, or a date.

After walking out of a terrible experience from the restaurant next door, it was amazing what a difference true service can do.

We were promptly seated on a Friday without any reservations. The servers are beautiful, the ambiance is refreshing and new, and the food is so full of flavor that it becomes an instant favorite.

This restaurant is quickly become a Robertson Hot Spot!

My wife and I were visiting LA from South Florida and were in the mood for a nice Argentinean place. We had no reservatuions but that was not a problem... a very nice waitress told us to wait a couple of minutes to setup a table for us, and then another beautiful waitress took us to our table. The ambiance is very romantic and I must say unique... you will enjoy every corner of this place, the decoration will be hard to find anywhere else and the food is awesome... worth every penny!

my boyfriend made reservations to take me to sur at 8pm...we arrived and were told to sit anywhere...we chose a table(nothing was reserved for us). the waitress came over to take our order. everyone around us had beautiful baskets of bread and water, except for us...5 minutes after we ordered our food arrived(how was it cooked made to order, i have no idea!) noone ever asked us if we needed anything and how our meal was...i was still eating and my plate was taken away...we were completely rushed! why? i don't know, it was not even busy. the service was extremely rushed and impersonal and looked very disorganized...they did not even try to make valentine's day special at all...if you are looking for a fast food joint with a romantic atmosphere, this is it!

Intimate, interesting, different, cool, hip, delicious. We are always looking for something new and unique, and we were lucky enough to stumble upon Sur. The menu is theoretically Argentinean, but there was a varied and eclectic mix of enticing flavors and styles. The atmosphere is a little euro, a little laid back, and a little romantic. Candles are everywhere and the linens are relaxed and alluring. It is very open to the outside, so there is a sense of space, but it is cozy at the same time. The food was very good. I highly recommend the corn fritters and the crab risotto was very nice as well. The staff was beautiful and capable, and the owner friendly and charming. A great place for a date or just something different.

It is a beautiful Friday night in Weho. I'm an "out of towner" - with no reservation. I thought "I'll never get in to this place". This gorgeous waiter (turned out to be the gorgeous owner) made room for me - he had a full restaurant including 2 large parties in this serene, sexy oasis. Guillermo and his team make it look effortless - connecting with each guest feel like they are a special friend. It really does not matter what you order, you cannot go wrong. Whatever you do, have the white sangria.

Just a block up ROBERSTON BLVD from Morton's Restaurant, where the Vanity Fair Oscar Party takes place, this eatery is truly a gem! NO attitude, friendly service from the Argentine owners, intimate dining...great for a business dinner or a romantic dinner with someone special. Plus the prices are resonsable and the food, EVERY DISH i have ever eaten there is mouthwatering! Cooked healthy and BIG portions, from salads to the main course - you almost can't go wrong with any of the dishes. There's a nice selection of wines, from the Mendoza region of Argentina, and the deserts are too good to pass up. Really, once you eat at SUR, you will want to make it a weekly habit. I look forward to an expanded menu...since I have tried almost everthing on it!

Sur is a find! Awesome cooking full of flavor and unique presentation - try the goat cheesed stuffed chicken or the pepper covered Ahi tuna - both excellent. start with the belgian endive salad which is outstanding. Wine selection is limited - but does the trick as the Argentines do know how to serve up some strong cabs. Wait staff is friendly and professional without being stuffy (and they're gorgeous too!). Outdoor patio for warm nights or intimate lowlight indoor space with cool local artist's work on display. Sur rocks...give it a try.
