At one of the largest restaurants in L.A. that's still run like a mom 'n pop shop, Kate Mantilini's second location has a remarkably more modern vibe than its popular 90210 address, along with a slightly more diverse menu than the original. Owned and operated by the Lewis family since they birthed the concept in 1987, the more youthful sibling further extends Kate's idea of culinary Americana, possessing homegrown classics such as meatloaf, chicken pot pie and warm apple pie. Tucked away in the former Houston's location, it's easy to spot remnants from a noir-ish interior that retains almost the exact decor of its darkly-lit, southwestern-styled predecessor. Offering a colossal selection of comfort foods sure to appease both old souls and young, you can taste everything from the Signature White Chili to the Eastern Shore Crab Cakes to roast prime rib.
It's OK - but overpriced

The food at Kate's is always OK - there is something for everyone with a very long and varied menu. The seating and lighting is nice. I am always shocked at the cost. It is just over priced for the kid of place it is. I think there are better options in that exact area. If you do end up going, the white chili is yummy.

My boss took me here during my first week at work and it was very impressive. Not loud. Nice business lunch and the hamburgers were great. I need to go back, because everyone says the artichoke is the best.

The artichoke appetizer is the best here as is the chocolate pecan pie. It's nice for date night and you can still wear jeans. :)
The service is always good and the movies are right across the street.

Yummy and Great Atmosphere
by Marie N.
The food is very good but priced a bit too high. The atmosphere is soothing and very nice for a date or ladies' night out. Staff is very friendly. I will definitely return again.

If you have problems with gift cards
by ravenwoods
I had a problem with expiring gift cards and took it up with the owners. If you have gift card which does not have an expiration date printed on the card, and yet they will not honor the card, remind them that the owners have promised to comply with the law, which says that expiring gift cards must have a clearly printed expiration date on the card.
Pros: good food
Cons: If you have a problem with Gift Cards

They don't do chicken right
by rickrickrick
went for a business lunch. Had the Buffalo Chicken Salad. What a disappointment. Way overpriced $16.50 for what amounted to a mound of lettuce and 2/3rd's of a lifeless chicken breast dipped in sauce. A better version can be had at Denny's for half the price. The waiter was present but not connected to us. We were his only table.
Pros: Nice Space
Cons: Dis connected servers, Overpriced

Bad Food and Horrible Service!!! Save you money and AVOID this place!!!!!!!
by laalphafemale
After reading a couple of reviews I decided to take my mother who was visiting from out of state to Kate?s. We were greeted by a hostess, after she finished applying her lip gloss and sending a text message of course, who rolled her eyes when I requested a booth, saying ?ummm, they?re all booths.? After the warm welcome I had high expectations for the food, after all with all the good reviews this place had I figured it definitely wasn?t for good service. Our waitress who looked intoxicated and slurred her speech kept twirling her hair as we tried to order some drinks. After ignoring our table (the restaurant was EMPTY by the way) for about 20 minutes, and forgetting to bring bread, the waitress finally came back and took our order. I ordered a $40 NY Strip Steak that came out looking like a $4.95 Sunday Special Steak at Denny?s. The portion was extremely small and thin, I ordered it rare, it came out half medium and half well-well done. It wasn?t even edible!!!!!!! My mother ordered the crabcakes which despite the small portion ended up being pretty tasty. I DO NOT recommend anyone waste their money on this place, you?d be better off getting a steak at Denny?s or Norms!!! I couldn?t figure out how this place got such good reviews, but now I think I?ve figured it out? the dates, the place got killer reviews a year or so ago, but it is definitely not worthy of the praise now-a-days. This is my first time being so disgusted and disappointed that I?ve actually signed up and written a review, so please take my advice and save yourself from a horrible dining experience.
Pros: Comfortable Booths
Cons: Food, Service, Parking, Price.... did i mention Food?

WORST turkey burger in the world, drinks -no buzz, veggies overcooked
by sartori2
I used to live around the corner in beverly Hills and went to "Kate's frequently, untill the turkey burger! Shocked, disillusioned, horrified, I could have soled my manolos with it and prayed that anyone i had refered there, never actually went. I considered selling them my own recipe, but decided against it. The decor is refreshing. The tables widely spaced. It looks clean. However one looks over one's shoulder more than once in hope of making an appointment with wait staff. The food is definitely overpriced and by the way, indeed it isn't Mack Donalds. It isn't the Four Seasons (NYNY) or La Gavroche ,London, or Brasserie Lippe in Paris either.
Pros: decor is fresh . Looks clean
Cons: It aint what it used to be. hard, dry burgers. just slipping....like all of us

Excellent food and service, definitely worth visiting!
by mnirivero
This location is by the same people at Kate's in Beverly Hills, thus I knew I had to visit on my way through town (since I so rarely go up that way). AND I AM GLAD I DID; I ordered the avocado burger with beer-battered fries and was in heaven! I don't know what kind of sauce they use but it is delicious and fresh. I was surprised that the avacado was so good and salty, which added just the right flavor to the burger and the fact that it was not mushy was fantastic. I met a girlfriend of mine there and hadn't seen her in a long time, so i was nervous because I had ranted and raved about the Bev. Hills location and didn't want to disappoint. Turns out she had been wanting to go to that place for a while,so she was went in with a very critical mind-frame. Now this is a gal that is SO picky about food too, so i was extra worried. But as soon we walked in we were greeted by a very friendly gal who went the extra mile to accomodate us: when I told her we were old friends visiting for lunch she said "in that case, let's seat you two in an area where you can chat". She then took us to a quant area of the restaurant where it wasn't too noisy, which I really appreciated. The waiter came shortly after and said "I hear you two have a lot of catching up to do...alot of talking means you'll be thirsty" and had waters in hand! They really put there best foot forward so we left a big tip. We are certainly going to make that our reunion place from now on!!!
Pros: The above and beyond service and delicious food
Cons: That people have said the prices are high; this isn't Mcdonald's people!

Horrible, don't bother!
by encinogirlrocks
Horrible, don't bother. The famous Mac and Cheese was more like dry and old. Really really awful. And the manager acted like, yeah so what. Total attitude. Uncalled for. Sadly, they are not customer friendly at all. I wonder if Kate herself knows how lame this location is? The Bev Hills location is far superior.
Pros: Nice holiday lights
Cons: The rest of the place.

Great Food but consistently WORST SERVICE.
by jkspade
Have eaten here 8 times in the last couple of months. 5 sit downs & 3 take outs. The food here is fantastic. As many people say that it's over priced comfort food, it is somewhat justified. THe food is very good. My favorite is the sauteed mushroom burger. Their white chili (white bean, white meat, white cheese, white rice) is good also. Their beer battered fries to me is the best fries I've ever had. Their mac & cheese is also the best I've had. Their flourless chocolate cake is made just right.
Now their service is totally the opposite. Every single time I've eaten theere, we've always had to wait a long time just for the server to first come up to our table. The worst being about 10 mins of nobody coming up to us. None of these times had the place ever been packed either. The worst server was this bald guy with glasses. One time we sat down & when eventually somebody came to our table, it was another server dropping us the menu & telling us that our server will be with us. So we're waiting a while to place the order & when we finally got someone to take our order, it was another server taking our order & then telling us our server will be by to take care of us. When the food was finally done, a bald guy came by to drop off the food & walked away. I found mold on one of my lettuces & when I was trying to find our server, I had to ask another server who my server was. They pointed out to me that it was the bald guy. He never even introduced himself to us. I told him about the mold & he just came back with the check later on when we were finished & never told me anything about the mold. When I asked, he said the chef in the back was crazy & that the chef told him it was wasabi. Anyways, that's just one story.
During 2 of the 3 times I got take out, they only gave me one packet of ketchup for my fries. Ridiculous. Anyhow, there are other stories to tell. But the bottom line is the food is very good. Just don't expect any service.
Pros: Great food. Great Variety.
Cons: Consistently BAD SERVICE. Kind of pricey.

Great space
by sfyoung
Went here quite a few years ago,the food was on point and the interior space was modern and spacious. Had the spinach dip app & fresh guacamole which was very tasty. I'd agree with the other reviews a little pricey but the food was good & the design of the restaurant was impressive.
Pros: Beautiful interior
Cons: Food was good but nothing cutting edge....

Nice place

Not a bad place. Good service, good atmosphere. Bit pricey. Not outrageously so, but definitely noticeably pricey. The food was OK, but I can't really recommend the place.
Pros: Service and Atmosphere
Cons: Prices

Some great food!
by dhmarcus
Thick burgers, extra clams in the chowder, tangy lemon box pies, perfect prime rib, pot pies to relish, great salads, delicious fresh fish - just a few reasons plus great service and friendly management make me relieved that Kate is there!
Pros: meat is their forte, entire staff, unique dishes
Cons: a tad pricey, no kids menu

Incredible Taste
by lesly
Very nice ambiance, but not pretentious. My husband met me there after work and he thought he would be under dressed. There were several people dressed down, casual atmosphere. The food is incredibly delicious. Our server promoted the pot pie, but came back to say they were sold out-that was our biggest disappointment. There are selections for vegetarians and lots of choices if you are watching your weight. I had chicken paillia (sp?). Layered rice, spinach and chicken. Outstanding! Just great food. Plan to spend some money, but the portions are perfect-not too much, not too little!
Pros: Menu Selection, Ambiance/Service, Validate St. Parking
