Lard

by Edwin D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,623

Been here numerous times but I only have one thing that bugs me about this place-they use lard. Taste very heavy on me but overall, I give it a four star as their pastries and sandwiches are tasty, delicious and excellent customer service.

Great place for pastries and deserts!!!

by Daphne W. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,639

Porto's Bakery is a great place to get great deserts and pastries. I highly recommend their fruit tarts, meat pies and potato balls. It may sound pretty plain, but they're really good. I would try to either go there early or at least not during the lunch hour, because there'll be crowds of people waiting in line. But it is definitely worth the wait if you love all kinds of pastries!!! Highly recommended

Couple of observations

by Izzy Q.

I am a long time Porto's fan, I don't mind the long drive. However, this year I've had 2 bad experiences.
1) Hard and un-biteable fruit tort crust. I had to drive back the next day to exchange for a different type of cake all together.
2) I bought a cake for my sister's birthday, she is a merengue nut, but when we brought it home we noticed the cake was all bread and a very very thin layer of icing, that in some areas revealed the bread. I am just afraid that the quality is flying out the window !!!

Long time customer

by Xochil R.

I have been buying baked goods from porto's for ever, even as a child all the cakes for special occasions came from porto's. You can never go wrong with porto's from having a simple lunch to planning a party. Hands down best bakery in LA county, and trust me I eat @ allot of places.

You can't go wrong!

by Patrick H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,742

You can't go wrong in ordering the wrong pastry! Everything is great. I don't think I have ever seen this place empty. The sandwiches are terrific, the potato balls are great, and of course all the pastries are delicious. The price for everything is well worth it. I would recommend this place to everyone.

Much more than a bakery

by Suzanne K. | insider Insider | Rank: 25,691

Spectacular cuban cakes. I buy all my special occasion cakes from Portos. The cakes are fresh, delicious and beautifully decorated. We love the fruit cake with Italian meringue and the mini fruit tarts. I arrive at 7:00 a.m. to avoid the crowd. They have a great website.

On the cafe side, my favorite is the pan con lechon cuban sandwich. The moist pork with the fresh bread always hits the spot. Service on both sides is efficient and pragmatic which is fine by me.

Lemmings to the sea!

by Matt L.

Dissapointment. Drove to Pasadena to pickup custom birthday cake, icing was droll and cake was flavorless. Some of the icing fell away revealing a tear in the cake and flour residue.

great selection and reasonably priced

by Linda T. | insider Insider | Rank: 21,367

I found this bakery by accident and noticed that it had a crowd and huge lines. There is a huge selection of desserts and they also serve meals. It was confusing to figure out which line was for what, but the food is very high quality. I always go here to get food for special occassions and parties.

Great bakery with original desserts and catering

by mitchell s. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,669

We buy all our birthday cakes at Portos because they are simply the best! The place gets really crowded on Saturdays so I find that it is best to get there when the store opens to avoid the rush. Parking is limited and the wait can be long - but worth it.

PROS: Great food, great prices, original desserts
CONS: Very Very busy, long waits, limited parking

A Must-Visit Bakery!

by Anonymous

Porto's is absolutely one of my favorite bakeries. I love just walking by and taking a whiff of the air, as it always smells of delicious fresh-baked bread. They have a great party menu of appetizers, such as potato balls, empanadas (meat pies), and ham croquettes. Their pastries are also to die-for; the chocolate croissant and the spinach-feta croissants are my favorites. They offer a lunch menu of various Cuban sandwiches, and the prices are very reasonable (the portions are somewhat small though). For more information, visit http://www.portosbakery.com

The lines tell the story

by Young H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,082

This place is always crowded. Lines out the doors. They remodelled to double their size a while back and it still can't contain the traffic that comes through. Parking is hard to find, the wait is pretty long despite the enormous staff they have running around doing their best. The fruit tarts make it all worth it. No complaints because their bakery treats are awesome and sitting down for a tasty sandwich at a great price... well at least when you get to that point you can forget about the parking and the lines - if you can find a place to sit.

Portos.

by Tracy N. | insider Insider | Rank: 20,131

This bakery has been featured on TV before. Definitely very popular. The baked goods are too pricey. Definitely not worth it. It's good, but I didn't enjoy the long wait. It's too noisy in there and not worth the wait. There are many other great bakeries out there.

Great pastries

by Chris H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,180

The fresh baked meat and potato pastries, as are the sweets. If you bring in a box of this stuff to the office, you'll be the new hero. The lines can get long and the wait even for a couple of things will be a few minutes, so give yourself plenty of time when you make a trip out there.

Great pastries, big crowds

by Jane K. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,594

Porto's has extremely good pastries, especially the fruit tarts, flan and tiramisu. The pastries aren't too sweet, but full of flavor and freshness. The cuban sandwiches aren't too bad either. The crowds get pretty hectic, so make sure you get there early to beat the rush. Prices are very good, especially for the quality of food you get.

Yuummmyyyy!

by Carolyn J. | insider Insider | Rank: 20,086

I love portos! I don't go there alot, because I might get too fat, however, they have great food, and baked goods. I love the light frosting and fresh fruit they use in some of their cakes. It can get crowded however. Best to order cakes in advance, just in case. I've been there when the lines are out the door!

PROS: Excellent Quality food!!
CONS: Can get overcrowded and confusing.

The best bakery ever!

by Tiffany P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,410

My boyfriend drove twenty minutes out of our way just to take me to Porto's bakery. This is a Cuban bakery that started in Manzanillo where it ran for six years before moving to the United States. It has grown and moved to where I've experienced it, and all I can attest to is how delicious everything looks and tastes! We had a hard time deciding what to choose from the endless rows of beautifully decorated treats, but ended up with an amazing fruit tart and very tasty guava danish. The prices are great, too. Definitely make this a stop if you're passing through the area.

Best Bakery in Southern California

by Marilyn P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,557

Portos is hands-down the best bakery in Southern Californiaand business proves it. You can stand in line as long as 30-40 minutes on a Sunday to get your baked goods. Why do people wait? Outstanding baked goods at incredibly cheap prices. A large chocolate croissant will run you just over a dollar (and its made with Belgian chocolate!) Other exceptional baked items include the hot ham and cheese croissant, the spinach feta croissant, the strawberry cheese croissant, napoleons, cream horns (less than a buck each!) and tres leches. This is just the beginning of the great baked items they offer including breads, rolls, desserts and specialty cakes.

Porto's Bakery has a tremendous selection of cakes and desserts at a great value. We have ordered from Porto's for every party or dinner that we've hosted in the past few years and are never disappointed. Though you can get a wide variety of items, they speicalize in Cuban pastries. It's always crowded so get their early and grab a number.

This is the best bakery ever. Too bad it is in the Glendale area. However, it is a Cuban family run establishment. They have an array of Cuban treats and baked goods. Also they have your traditional goods as well. They recently expanded their place as well as their menu. You can also get yummy sandwiches too. It is definitly worth the trip their.

However, they have found a great system for getting you in and out of there pretty quickly. Everything is SO good. We always love it when someone gets a cake from there for a party. They not only look good but they taste great too! They have these cheese danish things that are to die for!

Fantastic cuban bakery, with a small but decent lunch menu as well. Though the lines are long, it's well worth it. The baked good are all well worth the trip - fresh and inexpensive, my favorite is the almond danish, or the meat pies. It's a bit confusing when you first get here - there are three lines here, one for just baked goods, one for cakes, and one for the 'lunch' menu, but it's worth the headaches (and wait!)

Even though this bakery is close to my home what I do not like about it is that you have to wait. You cannot call in your order but you just got to come here and wait. It is well worth the wait because their pastries are awesome

This is one of the absolute best-known bakeries in the Los Angeles area. Authentic Cuban treats offered year-round for all to enjoy-but be ready! The environment is loud and busy, and you are expected to have your order ready when your number is called. The big questions is---pastry or sandwich? Maybe both. The milk cakes and guava danishes are to die for, but so are the meat sandwiches. Take a cake home for a party, and you will be the star!

Seriously, this place is amazing. The potato balls are terrific. Somehow they make a turkey and cheese sandwich taste better than any sandwich I have ever eaten (I think it has something to do with the glaze on top of the croissant. The cakes are works of art. If you go for lunch, you will find a HUGE crowd, but they know how to manage it well and your wait will be reasonable. Add to that amazing low prices on sandwiches and finger food and you have a world class place. Do spend some time lookingat the cakes. They cater as well, bringing you and your guests some amazing treats.
