I was told that Norte was the place to go, and this couldn't be further from the truth. I couldn't order off the dinner menu in the bar!! When I moved the the dining room I ordered just fine, but the server forgot to put my order in the computer. After 45 min, the server finally came over, after avoiding me the entire time and said my food would be right up. It promptly was delivered, I asked the poor delivery boy, in Spanish, what happened, and he laughed. I will never go back, and I would highly recommend Garcia's Mexican Restaurant on State street. It's better, bigger, faster, and where the locals go. I'll try anything once, and Nortes will be a distant memory.

My wife and I have been going to Norte, previously Fidel's, since Moby Dick was a minnow. The people are Great, the service is fabulous and the food is the best Mexican food we've ever had, and we've eaten at a LOT of Mexican Restaurants in the 40 years we've been married. Our entire family goes to Norte, sometimes one family at a time and sometimes as a whole tribe. We have NEVER been disappointed with the food OR service. One thing my wife and I REALLY enjoy is during the work-week on the way home from work at least once or twice a week we stop in for our favorite dish and a nice relaxing atmosphere to wind down from the busy day. I hope Norte is there for many more years to come.

Pros: Great food, service and spectacular views of ocean

Cons: There aren't any

My favorite mexican food in Oceanside! Since I was a little boy on vacation with the family to a young adult grabbing drinks with friends, I always insist on Norte (Okay, I still call it Fidels).

This place has a great patio, yummy salsa, a nice bar and a menu full of variety. I enjoy the lobster burrito or a classic chicken quesadilla!

This may be weird, but I really like their glasses - the brown, classic spanish feeling glass.

I went to Fidel's last night and was very disappointed. I went to the restaurant with a group of 12 for our friend's birthday. After we sat down, it took about 10 minutes to get our drinks and 25 minutes for our server to take our order. When he finally he came, he was actually saying things like "come on" to us so we would order faster. I ordered a virgin strawberry daiquiri that had almost no flavor in it. 10 minutes later I saw our server and complained about the daiquiri. He then tried to convince us that that is what a daiquiri is supposed to tast like. Apparently daiquiris are supposed to taste like watered down cool aid. When my plate of chips, cheese and guacamole came, it looked good. But when I tasted the food it was lukewarm. It was like they had made the food and then let it sit for 10 minutes till it wasn't hot anymore. During the meal our server just gave up giving us water refills and we didn't see him again till he brought the check.

I know other people have had good experiences from this restaurant, but based on my experience I will never come back. The restaurant's building is pretty interesting. It'd be worth it to go in and look around. But I wouldn't spend money there.

The food is authentic Mexican food without crossing the border. With a friendly atmosphere entangled with great flavorful food, its definitely a change from Taco Bell.

Some of the best chips and guacamole in the Carlsbad area. You can walk right around the back and take a walk on the beach until sunset. If your into fajitas look no further.

Not much cheers me up more than sitting outside on Fidel's sunny patio, consuming a Tostada Suprema at a leisurely, south-of-the-border pace. This corner (Carlsbad Boulevard and Carlsbad Village Drive) has to be the happiest place in Carlsbad. Everyone is on vacation, enjoying the sunshine, tired from a hard day at the beach or poolside ?? you get the picture.

I love to walk on the beach, get coffee at Vinaka and eat dinner at Fidels. Something about the chips and salsa they put at every table is absolutely addicting. It's a high quality, sit down restaurant with hold in the wall prices. Go during happy hour and get great margaritas at small prices and get some chicken floutas while you're at the bar. For dinner I recommend the crab burrito-I always substitute the salsa verde for their yummy burrito sauce. They're chimichangas and tostadas are also a favorite! The only thing I recommend against is ordering a hamburger, go to knock out burger up the street.

Cons: Parking can be difficult during the summer

this place is the best! my personal favorite is the fish burrito. chimichanga is good too. also the tostada! its huge!, you get a lot of food for the price. the tortilla chips are really great, fresh too. the salsa is a little weird, because its runny, not chunky, almost like spaghetti sauce, but i have gotten used to it and love it now. great outdoor patio seating, and indoor too. great atmosphere! this is a must place to go.

I've been going there since 1980. Been looking for a place that has food (especially the sauce) like it but nothing comes close from Los Angeles to Texas. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu but I really like the chicken burrito. The tender meat and the way the flavors are cooked in with that sauce is unbeatable.
