I agree with the other reviews but they might make it sound like the selection is more heavily political than it actually is. Don't get me wrong, it's a great resource for books on many topics that are political in one way or another, but they also have the basis of a good, well-rounded selection, not unlike City Lights.

The Green Apple is one of my favorite bookstores in SF. I love the selection, the peeps who work here, and the space - with its charm and character, old hardwood floors and narrow rows of shelves stuffed to the brim. They offer a wide variety of art & photo books, magazines, comics and you can often find deals on used CDs and DVDs. Be sure to check out the employee recommendations too.

This is a very cutsie bookstore in the mission district in San Francisco. There is a great selection of different kinds of books that you can browse through. And the salespeople are very helpful in seeing that you are satisfied with the books. The store is very clean and well lit. Parking is a little on the difficult, but not impossible. Wonderful addition to the Mission District.

I've been to this place a few times while my friends were in the surrounding area. It's a great place to read or research. I love how you are welcomed to just sit there for hours. They have tons of magazines and newspapers too. The workers are always so nice. Another plus is that parking is super there.

I like this little bookstore. It is located in the heart of the mission district and parking is not so bad. I often come here do research for my politics classes. They offer a wide range of books that I can use. I like the fact that they offer many books on he same topic with different viewpoints. Its a great place to visit and they often have community events. Great little bookstore with a big ambiance.

Yet another relic of San Francisco's radical Past, Modern Times is dedicated to being a resource for the progressive community in these troubled times. There are all kinds of author and community events, readings, etc. Check out their gender/sexuality sections and their Spanish-language resources above all. Strangely enough, there's also often random academic music books that I need/feel I should read just sitting on the shelf, waiting for me to buy them.
It's stores like this that make the Mission a great place to walk around and browse in.

If it's fiction you're interested in this may not be the place, but for progressive left-leaning politics it can't be topped. This store is worker owned and operated and stocks titles from todays finest culture critics on a wide range of topics from feminism to the anti-globalization movement. Unfortunately there is little in the way of used books here.

If you love current political writing, you'll love this place. Everything from books on vegitarianism to Buddhism. Great selections and wonderful quirky books! They have a nice space set up in the back for book readings and a few chairs throughout the store (a must!). Stop in to pick up this week's Communist newsletter or just for a look.

Pros: great selection, political books, reading space
