I loved it,food was excellent. But the customer service was the worst. Managment needs to retrain the staff, very rude with attitude. But will still go again for the food. Thanks to the kitchen STAFF,very GOOD.

The Basinis is the best run, best food, best atmostphere and best service resturant in Saratoga. I have visited them on a number of different occassions and they have always beenoutstanding, Andrew , the owner, has greeted me almost everytime I have visited his establishment and he always comes to the table, as he does with all the tables, to find out if eveything is to our liking. I have been served by Todd on a few occassions and he is a true professional. He is a wakiing encyclopedia on foods, wines and spirits. If you want to have an outstand experience everytime The Basin is your best choice.

Pros: THE BEST RETURANT IN SARATOGA

Cons: I live 40 miles away

The Basin is consistently great - both the food and the service.
The owner Andrew keeps the place humming along.

This past Saturday evening (6/7/08) I held a private 50th anniversary dinner for 23 in The Basin's warmly-lit private back room. I arranged the whole party from Los Angeles with owner Andrew whose kindness and attention to detail were evident from his emails. I told Andrew we would have 18, and at dinner time we had 5 extra people -- without hesitating, our main waiter Bruno snapped up another two tables, fit them into the room, and seated us without ever losing his smile or patience. Custom menus were printed for our party, delighting the guests of honor. The food reminded me of the authentic flavors of Spain I'd enjoyed only a year ago: Croquetas, jamon serrano, olives, warmed nuts, and Spanish cheese started our adventure. I had the cream-free carrot-ginger soup and a savory line-caught Sea Bass with perfect texture and lovely plating. The steaks ordered by some of the guests are the thickest I've ever seen, and I've been to Ruth Chris, folks. These were better. The Dungeoness crab pasta had a little kick, perfect with the red wine being served. Exacting standards of flavor from the chef were balanced for everyone all around -- a true symphony. The food arrived quickly, the wines were outstanding, and Andrew and Bruno's leadership of the team helping with our party made the evening a night to remember for the rest of our lives. Hats off to this unassuming five-star gem, worthy of a visit from the folks at Michelin.

Cons: parking is tricky -- maybe a valet would help?

This is our favorite Saratoga restaurant. The food and ambience is great and the owner, Andy, makes everyone feel like part of the family. It's sort of "Cheers" with great food and fun. It's quite small though so seating is really tough if you don't have a reservation. A lot of people go there before the Mountain Winery concerts so a later reservation might be a good idea.

We happened to try The Basin before a concert at the Mountain Winery and were very pleased. They managed to squeeze us in on a busy concert night and provide attentive service and excellent food. We will definitely go back!

I never used to be a fan of mushrooms until I experienced mushroom nirvana at The Basin. This dish (described as a signature dish) was chalk full of exotic, wild mushrooms such as chanterelles and morels, plesantly light cream sauce, and al dente rigatoni pasta. Our waitress was knowledgable and food savvy. She explained that the meat and produce come from organic and if possible sustainable local farms. The fish is rod and reel caught and they could even name the fishing boat that it came from! The beautiful skirt steak is hormone, chemical free and grass-fed. The owner greeted everyone that walked through the door, gave hugs to his well known guests as they left and shook the hands of the patrons he did not know. The restaurant was full of positve energy and was obviously a delightful local hang out spot for anyone looking for an epic glass of wine (or even better a bottle), a pint of beer or a good stiff martini.

Cons: I wish I didnt have to fly across country to visit the basin

went here tonight and was dissappointed in the crowd. The food was okay and the beer was good, but I like people watching and this place was dead on a wed night. Not a place for a great scene.

A group of my friends and I decided to dine one night due to a friends graduation. We weren't very knowlegeble about food or wine so we decided to search restaurants online and came around to The Basin. The main dining room was lit with a very soft lighting excluding the beautiful candles on the table. Andrew, who I believe to be the owner of the establishment was very generous by letting us have dinner without reservations. He mentioned that next time we come back reservations would be a good idea. The service was great, our server helped us paired our food with our wine and was extremely helpful with the descriptions of the food/wine. The pork chop was phenomenal. It wasn't dry at all! the bourbon whole seed mustard sauce was to die for.. thinking about it makes me want to come back for more. Overall, it was probably the finest dining experience I have ever came across. Thanks to the staff of the Basin and Andrew for a great time!

We went there based on several different recommendations, and were sorely disappointed. The service was good, the prices were high, and the quality of food was mediocre. The paella was one of the worst I have ever had, and the foie gras tasted horrible. We also had the chicken, again mediocre, the ahi tuna which was ok, and the lamb shank which was nothing to write home about. All in all, a very average restaurant, one would expect a lot more, just because of the quality of neighboring restaurants, if nothing else. Would not recommend, unless you have absolutely no other choice. Definitely not worth the price or the reputation

We went to The Basin to celebrate finding out we were going to have our first baby. I made the reservation and we have a very good dinner. The service was good, steaks were very good and to top it all off they remembered I had just made a simple request to have a nice table as we were celebrating. At the end of dinner they made a nice gesture to us and my wife and I appreciated it. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Nice place, excellent bar and very good food. Try the seared tuna - OH my favorite. And if they have it the butternut squash soup is very good.

We always have a good time and good food when we go there.

Great date night place.

I must say that my first dining experience at The Basin was nothing less than spectacular. I was greeted by the gentleman at the front door, I believe to be the proprietor, and felt welcomed from the moment we walked in. Our server was very knowledgeable about food and wine to make our experience even more special, this is what dining out is supposed to be like. The ceasar salad is one the best that I've ever had! Hands down the fresh Seared Ahi and Grilled Alaskan Halibut will keep me coming back for more. The fresh ingredients and sauces were out of this world. The atomsphere and service are warm and welcoming, I look forward to sharing this little slice of heaven with my friends and family.

First of all the food is mediocre and overpriced. Paella was awful (chicken rice with strange taste, no scent of seafood). Service was slow. never again!

The food is really very average at best. We ordered the "basin" salad, paella, and the turkey crepes (small plate). All dishes were nothing special whatsoever. I don't think we'll

We had a fabulous meal, superb service, and overall excellent evening at "The Basin." The food was fantastic, and the price was appropriate (on the more expensive side, but worth it, unlike many places in the same price range). Each of our appetizers, salads, and entrees were so delicious, I was actually sad when I was full! Our waiter was very knowledgeable...when we asked for a Port recommendation, he actually recommended the LEAST expensive port, and it was delicious, so that was nice. Some places would recommend the most expensive...

Our first experience with this restaurant, and it was wonderful. Andrew, the proprietor, greeted us at the door. Todd, our server, was extremely helpful in food and wine suggestions. The food was outstanding (Paella and Barramundi dishes). Ingredients we wouldn't have thought to put together resulted in a perfect combination. The wine list is outstanding. Be sure to ask Andrew about recommending the cheeses for dessert - it was the perfect ending to a great meal.

While the rest of us were enjoying our amazing steaks and superb fish dishes, what would usually have been a difficult situation was turned into an example of what dinning out should be. My daughter, who is vegan, normally has a very difficult time going out to eat. The wait staff and manager at The Basin were totally attentive to her desires and prepared her not only something that fit with her lifestyle, but something that she truly enjoyed. I was amazed at how good the vegan prepared meal really was. What an amazing experience. To know that a restaurant is conscious of its dinners desires, and then excels at it, is what truly sets this place apart!

Price was a bit higher than initially expected, but well worth it. Other than the Basin salad, which was nothing special, everything was very good. I recommend the bread pudding for dessert, not normally a fan of it, but I would get it again. The NY Steak was truly medium well, and excellently flavored, and if you can, get the butternut squash soup. Despite having a lot in back, for a Tuesday evening, it was tough.

Looking for a truly unique dining experience some where south of SF? The Basin is the place for you! The attention to detail and heart felt love for the restaurant can be seen in every little thing. The service is tremendous, attentive and knowledgeable staff do not over whelm you. The cocktail list is varied and has some new twists on usual favorites. Where to start with the food! Only the single best and freshest ingredients go into every dish there. There is no dish that is not simply an excellent choice. Fresh local seafood! The best choicest cuts of meat! All of this in an environment that is welcoming and makes you feel a part of the family. To top it all off is a dynamic wine list that has had more attention and care given to it then most places will put into a lifetime of operation.

I got there at 7PM, with seven of my best friends, to be greeted by Andrew and his other wait staff in the most professional manner. The area where we sat was decorated beautifully with candles and they had two bottles of my favorite champange already chilling. We started off with oysters from Tamales Bay and they were the best oysters I've ever had. Then we had seven other dishes paired with wine, all amazing. They included salmon, butternut squash soup, excellent cheeses, clams, and more! The ambience and service was exceptional. They really showed us girls a great time with great food! I highly recommend experiencing THE BASIN!

This is a great little spot for dinner. The service was friendly from the moment we walked in the door. Our waitress was friendly without being intrusive. She noticed that is was my birthday and without even asking brought us a truely wonderful chocolate cake with a warm gooey center with a candle on the plate! It made the dinner even more special! Also their martini's are really great if your looking for something out of the ordinary.

The buzz at The Basin is, in itself, welcoming. Proprietor, Andrew Welch personally greets each guest, and the fun and palate pampering begins. My friends and I first sampled the fare after a 15 minute wait to be seated, and it was well worth the short delay! Make reservations, or drop by and enjoy. The capable and attentive staff pays attention with respect; the menu offers a blend of familiar and exotic influences, and each and every ingredient is obviously the freshest.

The Basin offers an established repertoire of favorite dishes, as well as a delicious variety of evolving cuisines. Tantalizing appetizers, delectable entrees, and scrumptious desserts are consistent choices, and make celebrating with a group, or, as I often do, dining and relaxing solo, a real treat.

For quality food and preparation, and the atmosphere of a casually elegant supper club, The Basin provides an unmatched celebration of dining.

Folks,

Please do not consider any comments from someone who thinks parmesan cheese goes on paella (8/04)! The great thing about Andrew Welch's restaurant is that upscale comfort is what Andrew and his knowledgable staff excel at. Yes, upscale and comfortable. The Basin is a perfect example of what makes Northern California so great. Beside organically growing most of his spring and summer produce, Andrew only uses purveyors who are keenly aware of what is available at the present time whether it be fresh wild salmon and dungeness crab caught near Half Moon Bay or mushrooms picked locally in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Andrew and his staff use their great talents to create a seasonal experience that is not readily available in most restaurants. Combined with an exceptional wine list from all around the globe, the Basin's Mediterranean and Asian influences always have me wanting more!

I think the Basin is an awesome place for just about anyone. Not only is the staff friendly and helpful, they go out of their way to make you feel welcome. It is one of my favorite places to go and think that you will agree. The food is over-the-top and their selection of wines is epic. Not only do they have amazing cheeses to accompany your wine, but the menu will please any type of appetite. The menu is sure to have something for everyone and they are more than happy to accommodate anyone. I can't say enough positive things about this place.

Andrew Welch's restaurant, The Basin, has set a standard for incredible and consistent seasonal gourmet fare in the Bay Area. This unpretentious, yet casually elegant location in tawny Saratoga has never disappointed me or anyone who I have dined with at the restaurant. Andrew's insistance on fresh, seasonal produce and seafood is always demonstrated in the simple, yet innovative menu offerings that span the globe for culinary influences. The staff at The Basin continually strives to please the varied clientele with a friendly demeanor and a very good knowledge of food and wine. The nice thing about The Basin is that you can make it as casual or as formal as you would like. Your experience will be the same; it will be fun and incredibly delicious!

One of the few Sebastian of the south bay. A great place to go after a hard day at work. The ambience and staff are great. Food is excellent and the bartending staff makes unique and special drinks. Reward yourself and try it out. Regulars already know it and keep coming back. Take a date and treat your friend to a nice evening. For businesses, use the atomic room for post staff meetings.

The Basin has never ceased to satisfy us. Always great food, service and atmosphere. Andrew is fantastic with wine suggestions. Their latest cocktails-The Creamsicle and The Mango-Majito Martini are awsome. We sometimes go just for their Chocolate Bomb dessert. Saratoga is lucky to have them. They accomodated us for an early dinner on Mother's Day, we sat on the patio and had a great time with our children.

The staff has their act together. Water glasses filled as soon as we sat down. Napkins immediately replaced with a new one if someone got up from the table. Warm, friendly service...The decor is very cool, tasteful, yet with a twist. The atmosphere is ideal for any situation. They really do have good martinis and an interesting cocktail menu. The food is very good and has a lot of bold and interesting flavor - chilled canteloupe soup with mint oil...oooh ahhhhh yummmm. This is a winner!

Pros: service, food, atmosphere

Cons: price

.

The Basin is by far the best restaurant in the south valley. If you haven't tried it out yet, don't hesitate. It matches up (and in many cases) beats the best restaraunts in Palo Alto and SF...Incredible fresh food, service but an atmosphere that is casual rather than stuck up...
