Aux Delices was established in 1975 at its Potrero location, across from San Francisco General Hospital by Sinh Luong. The second family-owned restaurant relocated to its present location on Polk Street in 1987 and has been part of the quaint Russian Hill neighborhood ever since. Aux Delices translates as "At the Delights" and is considered French Vietnamese, because Vietnam had been a possession of France from the late 19th century. Vietnamese cuisine is light, crisp and fresh. Chef and Owner Tina Nguyen offers quality dishes that include herbs and spices, such as mint, cilantro, basil, lemongrass, ginger and garlic. The Nguyen family invites everyone into their restaurant as if it was their own home and is loyal in their commitment to creating quality and flavorful food. Dine at San Francisco's Aux Delices tonight for dinner!

Great neighborhood Vietnamese restaurant

by HaNguyen

A great neighborhood Vietnamese restaurant. Try banh xeo, the Vietnamese crepes there! The prices are good and the service is quite good considering it's more of a family neighborhood restaurant.

fresh!

by finickyflower

I have been going here for years. It is consistenly good food with friendly service in a nice place. It is unique as it is a value with a nice ambiance. They are anice family who has been doing this for years. They have done little in the past to advertise and that is the only reason I can think of that it is not crowded on a regular basis.

Pros: great food and service

The food is good here!

by foodielover

The restaurant moved from Potrero St to this location 19 yrs ago. Altho' they no longer serve my favorite lemon chicken porridge, the food is very good. The chao ga (chicken rice porridge soup) is the same comfort food served at Chinese restaurants with a soupy rice flavor and chunks of chicken. We didn't sample the imperial rolls or appetizer starter but the diners next to us looked like they enjoyed theirs. The garlic noodles were delicious, with just a hint of garlic and not as starchy/saucy tasting as the infamous garlic noodles at Thanh Luong in the Sunset. I especially enjoyed the Ga Chien (crispy fried strips of chicken breasts with a sweet, spicy, garlic sticky sauce, just like the orange chicken at those mall Panda Express. The Bo xao gung va xa (beef sauteed w/ginger/lemongrass was good, but too heavy in sauce and salty. A container of tea for $3.50 was enough for 2. There are lots of restaurants nearby including La Folie, but if you're looking for good Vietnamese food, this place is worth a visit. The waitresses were friendly and cordial.

Pros: Nice restaurant, good food, friendly wait staff

Cons: parking

All the reviews are true!

by cherryblossom525

I found this place on citysearch and thought I'd try it out. I took my 10 friends here for lunch recently, and all the reviews are true--it's a fantastic restaurant! We ordered three appetizers sampler platters ($10), each person got a thai tea ($2.50) or vietnamese iced coffee ($2.75), and an entree (between $7 and $9). It was very reasonable; their lunch menu is not on their website, so I was prepared to pay a couple dollars more per entree before realizing the great deals. My crispy chicken with garlic sauce was very good; three of my friends ordered the same thing and said likewise. My friends said the other dishes were great as well (I can't quite remember what was in them, but I do remember the number 44). The Vietnamese coffee was very interesting; you basically let a contraption on top of a glass drip coffee onto condensed milk, which you then stir and pour over ice. Fun! The service was courteous and friendly; I had a birthday cake and the man who worked there (who had also called earlier to confirm my reservation and offer a pre-set menu) refridgerated it, and later put it on a plate, lit a candle, and basically got everything ready! I even offered him a slice, he was such a great host. Even though the restaurant closes at 3ish for dinner preparation, we didn't feel rushed, eating lunch at 1 and opening presents at 3. Of course, they didn't shoo us out. If only this restaurant were closer, I'd eat there every day! The only thing is, turn your cell phone off--there is a sign at the door. But that also means it's a great place for quiet conversations feeling sophisticated.

The best for a reason

by marrkoss

Although I still don't know how to pronounce the name, I return time and again for the friendly service and great food. My girlfriend and I have been to Aux Delices a number of times (you could call us regulars) and every experience has been impeccable. The service is very warm (we have a particular waitress that we have taken quite a shine to). The food is very reasonably priced and quite varied. I have had steamed vegetables (a healthy but delicious treat) soup (great on a chilly SF winter day) and steak (surprisingly good and only $16). This restaurant is one of my favorites in the city!

Pros: great food, great service, quick seating, cheap

Cons: can't think of any

Great service, food, and atmoshpere!

by quentinludwig

My girlfriend and I eat in the city often and this is one of our favorite places to go. You can't go wrong by pointing anywhere on the menu and saying I want that! Each dish is as good as the next. And if you are lucky, you'll get Ha as a waitress. She is one of the reasons we keep coming back. She is so nice and knows everything we need before we ever have to ask for it. Giver her a raise!

Fabulous

by m_violet

Fabulous Vietnamese food and they're growing a great wine list.

Perfect service, delicious fresh foods prepared fantastically. I suggest trying something different and talking to the owner of the establishment who has been on hand whenever I've eaten there. He'll assist with food and a wine pairing and you'll leave with a happy palate.

Some of the best Vietnamese food in SF, including Slanted Door and others.

Pros: Price, freshness, wine list

Cons: can't think of any.

Proud to be in the vicinity

by sandala622

This is one of my neighborhood favorites because they never fail to bring great food and customer service to the table. Also, their garlic noodles are the best Ive had. Other places put too much butter, not enough garlic and/or they use spaghetti noodles, but Aux Delices has it just right. And you have to try their shrimp and sugar cane roll. The sugar cane absorbs the taste of the shrimp so after youre done with the roll, you can chew on the sugar cane for some really good juice! And their catfish claypot has this delicious caramel sauce that has just the right sweetness and is too spicy. The only dish that needs work is their lemongrass chicken, which was too salty. Otherwise, this restaurant is great and it deserves more recognition than it seems to get.

Pros: food, value

A family affair

by tincan758

I've been going to Aux Delices for a few years now and it's the best Vietnamese place I've found in the city (that's a lot coming from a fellow Vietnamese person). The portions are great, and they'll add more spice if you request it. I love their thom rang mua (salt/pepper shrimp), BBQ chicken, poridge and seafood soup. They're extremely kind and it's a family establishment. It's a great place to go to if you've never had Vietnamese food before and you want a introduction.

Pros: yummy food, good price, lunch & dinner

Great food, great environment, great family

by ems11

I can't say enough about this restaurant. I have been going here for years, and have never been disappointed. The family owned restaurant treats you like family, and serves up great, delicious food, for moderate prices. If you are planning a party, or want something quick to go, this is the place. I love the catfish in claypot and the spring rolls. I've had about everything on the menu, and I can say it's all yummy. Check this place out, there's a reason why all the reviews rave about this place.

Pros: Food, Family, Fun

Cons: Parking tight, valet

I'm going again tonight

by philologia

Whenever I'm tired or sweaty after the gym, this is where I eat. The food is generously portioned and incredibly tasty. I highly recommend the caramel pork in a clay pot. The owners began recognizing us on our second visit, and now welcome us as if we were family.

OMG!!!! ITS THE GREATEST!!!!

by sanfranciscoant

I was first introduced to this incredible restaurant in 2000. My boyfriend at the time had been doing some work for the family that owns the restaurant and they brought us lunch. The lunch consisted of rice and the crispy chicken. One bite and five years later I still wake up in the middle of the night haunted by the amazing flavors, shaking because I NEED IT. The family, the Nguyens, are some of the best people I know and truly know how to make you feel at home. If you do decide to check this place out just know that there is no turning back. Once you're in, you're in for life!!!

Pros: FOOD/ATMOSPHERE, COST, NGUYENS

Cons: NONE, NONE, NONE

WOW!

My wife and I have eaten here dozens of times. Everything is wonderful. Christine and her family are great! This family owned restaurant deserves the academy award of dining. If you eat at Aux Delice once, you'll unavoidably eat there twice... or more!

Pros: Food, prices, Staff

Best Delivery

by junior1

Everything I have eaten here was wonderful, except the dumplings. They use very high quality meat and I have tried many different dishes and always been happy. The portions are a bit smaller than your usual Chinese place, which is probably why the quality is superior. Great food that is cheap.

Pros: inexpensive

Addictively Delicious!

by russianhillbilly

The only Vietnamese food I had exposure to before coming here was Pho noodles. This place is tasty, the portions are generous without being too much. I highly recommend the Beef Satay Egg Noodles and the #57 (seafood and vegetables in a tasty garlic ginger sauce). I tried this place once because it was so close to my house. Now every time I have out-of-town visitors (or any other excuse!), I take them here for tasty meals with pleasant service and comfortable atmosphere.
