My aunt, my wife and I went to Clara's yesterday at lunchtime to celebrate my aunt's 84th birthday. It wasn't the first time to dine there. We had been there a number of times for lunch and at least twice for dinner, all of which were more than two years ago. This time, sadly, the meal was not even close to our expectations.

We had Crab Cakes for an appetizer. We found them to be quite tasty, though they had been a bit overcooked on one side and then rather undercooked on the top to compensate. (The blackened side was on the bottom, wouldn't you know!)

I ordered Chicken Marsala and received by far the smallest chicken breast I have ever seen in a restaurant, measuring no more than 4" x 2 1/2" x 1/2". It looked totally lost on the plate! The Marsala sauce was much less tasty than I expected as well. With eight or ten green beans making up the rest of the dish, I must say that the bread rolls had to satisfy the belly of a man 6'6" tall, weighing 200 lbs.! At $10.95, the meal was decidedly overpriced!

My aunt and my wife fared no better. Each ordered Eggplant Parmesan. The portions were meager, the presentation lackluster, and the flavor bland. Once again, had it not been for the rolls...

On the plus side (yes, there is a plus side!), our waitress was friendly and attentive. She was helpful in answering our questions about what to order and kept our coffee cups filled. However, when my wife asked our waitress for more water, the young man who a short time later came around to check the water at all the tables somehow missed ours. My water glass was not in need of refreshing, and my wife's was furthest from his view. He evidently didn't see hers, so we had to hail the waitress again.

All in all, a very disappointing meal for a special event and the last time we will dine at Clara's.

I have been here many times. Sometimes the food is good. Yes, the servers are great, but the decor is falling apart! It's outdated, rundown and the owner doesn't seem to care. I met the owner several times. Once as he was belittling, yelling and humiliating a server in front of us. (The poor girl) Another, as we were being seated by him, with the WORST customer service known to man. Lastly as he was walking from table to table acting as if he was friendly and picking and choosing the customers he actually cared about. I have called for information and whoever chooses to answer just says in a very annoyed/fast tone, "Clara's!" If you ask a question they usually respond by saying,"what?!" several times. Ending the conversation by just hanging up.
I have many other choices of places to eat, that I never need to go back there again. I suggest you do the same, keep looking. This is just my suggestion, but I want to know I didn't go just once or twice. I have been quite a bit. I finally decided to not leave from where I am eating completely stressed anymore! Out of a 1-10 I give it a;
2 for Environment
5 for service (only because of the servers)
3 for food (which by the way is made by a chef who doesn't wear a hair net, sticks his fingers in the food and takes a shower about once a week.)
2 for location (hard for new people to find the front door.)

Thank you

Being a Redlands local eating out can be a challenge. The town is not known for it's food. There are a couple of high end places that are nice, Clara's is not one of them. First I found the decor completely outdated. I would not have been out of place to pull up in a Delorean. The interior was dark and unwelcoming. It took a while for our waitress to get to our table and seemed flustered when we took our time ordering. I could not decide because there really was nothing on the menu I wanted to eat. We settled on a calamari starter that came out surprisingly quick. It was clumpy and had a texture like rubber. Our entrees came with salads, that's if you can call iceberg lettuce an unripe sliver of tomato and a smattering of cheese a salad. The roasted garlic dressing tasted like Asian dressing too sweet and the garlic was poached not roasted. The entrees came and were too salty and small for their price. I would not go back on a bet!

My family and I usually go to Clara's saturday evening. Often I drop in without reservations and we get a table right away. The hostess is very charming, and not only at the entrance, but during the meal will come by to ask if anything is needed? The staff are friendly, and are eager to answer all questions. They're very thorough of what is offered on the menu. I love the lamb, but the rest of my family like the prime rib, or steak. We all love the coffee. They have a great wine list, and the desert MMMMM! Try the creme brule. Clara's is my favorite place to go in Redlands. The service is great, and so are the prices.

We were treated to this restaurant by two distinguished ladies who had eaten here many times, one of whom had hosted her son's wedding rehearsal dinner here. Upon arrival we were seated in a booth for four. Our waitress brought us a bottle of wine but only brought three glasses. It took 15 minutes for us to get a fourth glass for our table and we had to track down another waiter to do so. Meanwhile, the table next to us, apparently were VIPS, friends of the owners. Our same waitress, was fawning all over them, offering them all sorts of VIP services, including free upgrades to their meal, excellent service, and free deserts and after dinner drinks. We, meanwhile, were ignored. Our appetizer plates and our salad plates sat on the table for close to 15 mintues each. I almost felt the need to bus our own table. Eventually our hostesses expressed their disappointment to several other waiters and then to our waitress herself. She became very belligerent and said "If you have a problem with the sevice, you can take it up with the hostess at the front desk." Apparently, there was no manager on duty in the entire restaurant. It's bad enough to give the back of your hand to your dedicated clientele, but to have no manager present is beyond belief. The liability alone is a serious problem for this business. What if a waiter spilled hot soup on a customer? or if someone fell? or if there were a fire? The hostess told us to "call the manager at 9 a.m. in the morning!" Hold onto your hats Redlands! Clara's is OUT OF CONTROL!
