Cha-Am, an old province in the south-western part of Thailand, is the city famous for its lovely beaches, great seafood and unique Thai herbs. Cha-Am restaurant in San Francisco, in keeping with tradition, uses only the finest ingredients sought every market day, to create a variety of delicious and authentic dishes. Chef and proprietor Utid (Gary) Srisawat is proud to follow the footsteps of his successful brother, owner of Cha-Am Berkeley, a popular East Bay spot for 11 years and going strong. Since June 23, 1993, Cha-am has secured a pretty regular crowd, and the restaurant truly speaks for itself.

Good Thai Option in SOMA

by Erica O. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,006

As much as I like going to Osha on 2nd Street, the wait is often long and the prices are a little high. Recently, my coworkers and I stumbled about Cha Am when looking for an alternative.

I was skeptical the first time as the restaurant was almost completely empty. The food, however, was a pleasant surprise. It was not the best Thai food I have ever had, but was definitely a satisfying and tasty meal. Service was fast and the prices were on par with most other Thai restaurants.

Great for vegetarian dishes

by awags

I had their vegetarian Pad Thai and it was the best I've ever had. The vegetables are fresh and cooked to perfection. Also for appetizer you must try the golden triangles ; they are delicious! Friendly service and nice atmosphere. This is my favorite Thai place in the bay area.

Best foods, Friendly Staff and Great Customer Service

by r545

I have been going to Cha Am Restaurants for almost 8 years. I enjoyed the variety of foods. Most of all, the staff are always very nice and friendly. The owners make you feel welcome and comfortable. They always smile when you come in the restaurant. Kenny, the bartender , is very good and he makes sure that everything is great. He mixes the best cocktail drinks. You are going to love him.

Cha Am Thai Restaurant have the best variety of foods and a very friendly Staff

Decent Thai Food, but not the greatest

by nlim

Food isn't bad, but you tend to get more vegetables than meats in the stir-fries. I think Koh Samui Monkey is much better, but a tad more expensive, or Osha which is a few blocks down is about the same price and has much better food. I have been there a couple times and have not had the urge to go back there once I have tried Osha and Koh Samui.

Pros: Quiet, quick dinner if you feel like Thai

Cons: There are much better Thai restaurants within the vicinity that I would rather go to

Fried Whole Fish with Mango Salad

by ngamjoel

WOW!!! An absolute MUST is their Fried Whole Fish with Mango Salad! Everything about this dish is 5-STAR! Also their Spicy Tofu with Mint Leaves is scruptuous! And their bartender Kenny realy knows his drinks! Plus the staff is so courteous and efficient -- everything you would expect Thai people to be. BTW, the restaurant has a partially separated alcove that is perfect for parties of 20-30 diners. I'm obviously preferential about Cha-Am -- I've probably eaten there 100+ times even though I have to drive across town to get there. And although parking is a bummer, they do validate parking in the garage for 2 hours.

One of my fave Thai places!

by deanosaur

I've been going to this place for several years and I love it. The imperial rolls are outstanding. I also love their red chicken curry and their spicy tofu dish. I've taken several out-of-towners here and I STILL hear about how much they loved the meal at Cha Am. The decor is cheesy and the location at the intersection of Third and Folsom isn't all that scenic, but the food is tops. Great lunch or after-work dinner spot. Enjoy!

Pros: Food, Value

Shotty service, average food

by spadams

It's priced and designed like a nice restaurant, but the food and service just don't stand up. Maybe I'll give it another try? The full bar is nice.

Super Duper

by rschick69

Stylish interior (a bit 90's) but nice sets the scene for very clean and distinct flavors. The selection of meals is semi-standard, but it's the execution that makes this place shine. The soups and curries are especially well done. It's a great lunch place too. Also, 2 hour free parking in the building!

Pros: Free 2 hour parking, Great Soups & curries

Good Lunch Spot

by cheryllbradley

Cha-Am has pretty good food - I like the pad thai and yellow curry dish (with chicken) although it can be pretty spicy. The fresh mango with warm sticky rice is tasty as well. I would recommend it to those who are looking for a new lunch spot but probably wouldn't go out of my way to go there for dinner.

Pros: Tasty food, Variety, OK Service

Cons: Little bit pricey

Good Food, Bad Service

by leeloo_1313

I've been here numerous times: lunch, dinner, weekdays, weekends. The food is always very good (spicy Tofu, veggie pad-thai, chicken curries) but the service is always slow. If you are not in a hurry and don't mind asking for drink refills, this is a wonderful place and well priced.

Pros: food!, prices

Cons: slow service

What Appetizers??

by gwentree

This place is just AWFUL! I have eaten lunch here before and because i was the only one in the resturant, the service was O.K. I went back for happy hour and dinner, NO free appetizers!! The service was slow even thought there seemed to be a lot of people working. The water was served in finger bowls and there was something floating in mine. I will not go back here. There are so many great Thai resturants in this city, and this is not one of them!

Cons: No Free Appetizer, Bad Service

Best thai near Moscone

by wastrel

I've seen several negative reviews of the restaurant, but I've always liked the place. Fresh ingredients and a lot of fare that goes beyond red and green curries.

Pros: good thai food, reasonable cost, fresh ingredients

Cons: crowded, sometimes slow

Dreadfully bad food.

by Bill_C

The food at Cha-Am is, to put it simply and to the point -- DREADFUL! It bears absolutely no resemblance to the fine tastes of Thai cuisine. Add to that, the service is very slow and rude. It is a place to be avoided.

Pros: Noner

Cons: Poor food, Poor service, High prices

One of the worst

by fnordpig

I can't imagine how this place was rated as high as it is. It's awful. With a Thai wife and having spent years in Thailand, I can spot pretty authentic Thai food and restaraunts. Authentic isn't everything: I think that there is a certain amount of interpretation that is necessary for it to be great Thai food. The food at Cha-Am Thai is awful, consisting of inappropriate vegetables and poorly flavored sauces. The primary flavors of thai food are (of course) chillis, sourness usually from lime, saltiness presented by preserved sea foods, and sweetness. These ingredients are not hard to find in San Francisco. Yet the don't use them appropriately. The service has always been exceptionally rude in my opinion, and the prices are very high compared to the quality of food.

Pros: Near to the theatre

Cons: Expensive, poor ingredients, rude service
