This is a great place. The runs are very wide which is great for begniners. I only wish they had more wooded runs, as in long trails surrounded by woods.

I took my family to Northstar in the beginning of March for 3 days and we had a great time. We put our kids (age 5 and 3) into the ski school program and they really loved it. The 5 year old was riding the bunny hill lift and skiing down green runs by day 3 and the three year old enjoyed the magic carpet and doing her "pizza" down the the small grade they use for little ones. Both kids loved the hot chocolate breaks and my wife and I loved that we got to ski all day on our own. I would have to say that on Saturday the ski school was a bit chaotic and when we watched our kids they weren't always getting close adult supervision. On Sunday however it was a different story with excellent ratios (4 to 1). I suspect that as the kids get out of levels 1 and 2 and get up on the mountain the instructor to student ratio improves a lot. That said, our kids loved it and want to go back again - so we'd do it again. To avoid long lift lines be sure to head directly to Lookout Mountain - a relatively new part of the hill that seems to never have significant lift lines and offers great skiing. I particularly liked Prosser, Stampede and Boca runs which are moderate black diamonds.

The Village upgrade is outa this world! Freakin' GREAT places, drinks and fun! Great for families still (after 30 years there)! Hangin' by the Ice Rink fireplaces with a beverage is awesome!\r\n\r\nBoarders know this is now the top board park in NoCal!

Pros: Best Terrain Park; Best Village BY FAR!

Cons: A little father from SF & Sacto than some other resorts

Northstar is a great resort for any type of skier or snowboarder. If you've never been there before, it might be a little confusing, but there is literally something for everyone. The biggest downside is that they are starting to become really snotty. The employees are still nice, but there are certain clubs that are members only, and the with the construction of a Ritz Carlton underway, it'll only get more pretentious.
On the upside, they have great snow-making, so even during the beginning and end of the season, it's pretty good conditions, and the mountains block most of the wind, so on stormy days you'll be way better off here. Parking is a bit annoying, because even in the closest lots, you still have to walk down and through the village area. The beginner slops get pretty crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, but that's pretty much to be expected.
As far as prices, there are always good deals out there if you look, check out your local ski/snowboard equipment stores for cheaper tickets.
Tip: When you turn onto Northstar Drive, keep going past the 1st round-about for parking. There is free parking closer to the Village.

Northstar is a complete skiing or summer resort. They have very nice accomodations, good summer sports, and excellent skiing during the winter. The resort is minutes away from Truckee, where you will find good shopping and restaurants.

I have been skiing at Northstar at Tahoe several times, and have never been disappointed. The skiing was always great, and it had a lot of blue intermediate runs.

On a nice day, you can see the lake from the top of the mountain.

The base of the mountain has a variety of shops and restaurants. When I visited, the base lodge was under construction, so they had a temporary one up. It was not that big. However; there are several places to get a bite to eat on the mountain - at midstation and on top.

Another great thing about Northstar is that they offer free group lessons for intermediate level skiers. This is definitely a nice perk, as lessons can be very expensive.

Northstar can get crowded on weekends and holidays, and is a little pricey (a lift ticket was over $60). However, it is definitely a good mountain with great skiing, especially for intermediates.

PROS: Good snow, nice views, lots of intermediate terrain
CONS: Expensive lift tickets

Great skiing, especially if you're an advanced intermediate looking to conquer black diamonds for the first time (read: you're getting bored with intermediate blues, but not quite ready to challenge double blacks). If that's you, this is the perfect place for you to practice on Northstar's nice long, and relatively wide, single black diamond runs on the backside of the mountain.

Parking is easy, especially with their frequently running shuttle service. Additionall, there is a run that you can ski that takes you right to the parking lot at the end of the day.

In Short
Known initially as a beginning and intermediate mountain, this resort has expanded in recent years to add a wide selection of advanced runs. Still, skiers won't find much double-black action here. The main draws are…
