My Daughter took me to Harold & Bell on Saturday May 1st and I thought the food was great. The beans were a bit salty, However I did enjoy my meal. The only complaint that I have is that there are many non blacks working there and if you are to keep within the tradition of what the restaurant was meant to be, you should have the proper people representing you. Such as Mexican restaurant, Mexican people, Chinese restaurant, Chinese people.

Maybe my hopes were too high for this place. My wife and I stopped in for lunch and she had the jambalaya, served with red beans and sausage, which consisted of a scoop of jambalaya over a big plate of red beans and two large sausages - twenty-two dollars. Although it was certainly authentic cajun/creole food, it was very salty, which maybe goes with the territory, I'm not exactly sure. But for that price I'm thinking it could have been more on the jambalaya/shrimp/cajun spices, etc, and less on the salt. All I know is my wife was not thrilled with it and I ended up eating most of it myself. I had the meatloaf sandwich -- also quite salty, but still decadent and tasty, which came with some very good fries; I devoured it. Obviously cajun/creole food is not meant to be healthy, I get that. But it is meant to have a medley of distinct flavors other than salt. There's probably other stuff on the menu I would enjoy more, maybe the chicken, ribs, or fish; not so sure I'll be back to find out (I know my wife won't). On the upside, our waiter was friendly and fast even though it was busy.

Pros: Authentic, decadent Cajun/Creole food in a city where that's hard to find

Cons: Too salty and too expensive

Harold & Belle's has been in Los Angeles for many years now. They serve up delicious creole foods. I make really good red beans and rice. Yet it's always a treat to eat them here. My favorite meal is their oyster loaf. They must do something special because I've never had one better. The prices are a little high.

We were a party of 18, I ordered the CatFish Dinner with Fries, I was the frist to order.. My friend seated next to me ordered a Comb. Plate.. Everyone got their food but me, My friend got the wrong order (CatFish with Coldslaw) after 15mins it was taken away and her Comb. plate was given to her. My plate came with out the fries and cold fish, it was the plate my friend had with the cold slaw gone, but the mark of the bowl still on the lettuce. This is a place that I have all ways love to eat at because of the service and the food.. This took all the joy from our Christmas Party... We won't be going back....

I LOVE this restaurant!! Just returned on Sunday afternoon. I had no complaints about the service, our waitress was friendly and attentive and refilled our soft drinks when empty. The Southern fried chicken is the very best I've ever had--a half bird with thick, flavorful breading and juicy meat. YUM. Meals are served with a green salad (or clam chowder), cole slaw, french fries (or another choice), corn on the cob, and warm buttery garlic bread. You won't go hungry! It's the friendliest place around. It's just about the best restaurant around!

The food was very authentic but our server was slower than molasses. We were visiting Las Vegas for the weekend and decided to drive to LA just to try this restaurant. I was satisfied until I saw that the server maybe came by one time without having us flag her down. Every time we needed a water refill or requested another soda we had to flag her down. You would think that when it came time to pay the bill, she would have been "Johnny on the spot", nope. My husband had to get the bill and take it to her and stand there to ensure that she ran the credit card. I think this establishment needs to hire another type of staff; I noticed that other diners experienced the same type of service. I understand hiring individuals from the neighborhood to ensure jobs in the community but please make sure you hire the right individual.

I will definitely return when I go back to Vegas this year but hopefully some staff changes have been made and I don't experience the same type of slow service that I have in the past. Once again, GREAT AUTHENTIC FOOD, VERY SLOW SERVICE.

Food Recommendations: Gumbo, Spicy Sausage, Catfish (2 can dine off of one plate with this entree), PEACH COBBLER WAS AWESOME.

I took my mom to Harold & Belle's for her birthday. I have been here several times and usually love the food. This day the clam chowder tasted like cream of mushroom soup with a few clams dropped in. The jambalaya was horrible but the catfish was good. I pretty much could have fried fish at home though and opened up a box of Zatarin's for more flavorful Jambalaya. We all agreed that the quality of the food seems to have decreased. There was only one server in the restaurant along w/people cleaning tables and bringing water so of course everything took forever. The parking though is what sealed the deal for me. I pulled into the valet paking lot and the guy told me to pull forward into an available space. The lot was practically empty. Now he did not park my car or take my keys after I parked so when I left I went to my car and was about to leave. He ran up to me demanding the $3.50 valet fee. I wanted to know what I was paying him for when he neither parked my car nor brought it to me. He said that I should have parked on the street which I very well should have had I known they were so rude. Anyway, I responded again that he did not valet park my car. He took my license plate number and got on the phone to call the police on me. Now, I just want you all to know I did not cuss him out, threaten him or anything. My bill was well over $100, which was to be expected so the money was not at all an issue. I am a professional and am college educated so please dont' picture me as a trouble making chick causing drama over $3.50 because I definitely maintained a respectful demeanor the whole time. It is just that I have never supposedly, valet parked my car and still had my keys in my possession to go and get my car to leave at my leisure, so I did not see the sense in paying him a valet fee for a service I did not receive. This experience along with the fact that the food was not so great this time has made me decide never to patronize this restaurant again.

I went there on Tuesday 5/13/08. The food was good and plentiful. Not my first time. A bit pricey for where it is located. The parking or shall i say no parking is less than desired. Three of us visited the restaurant. We took a visitor from another state. He like the chicken wing dinner but not the corn on the cob or the mashed potatoes, The other party found nothing special about the cajun spices. I liked my chicken and red & rice.

I have been to this restaurant once and wasnt overly impressed. Everyone talks about the huge servings which is great. But what I look for first is customer service and this restaurant is lacking it in that regard.

If you can handle bad customer services skills but good food, go for it!

Okay I love the shrimp and I am from NOLA and it is okay. The bread pudding is not like my grandma's but, if you don't know what good pudding is then it is okay. The service is the worst especially if you get Terri's table. Pure g***to, slow and not one apology.....the asst manager is my buddy and if you are a female you get better drinks from the bar than the guys lol....

I haven't been here in awhile but I do remember the food being really good. The problem with this place is that it is so small, you feel like you are eating with the whole restuarant and not just the people you came with. And the prices are really too high for the amount of food you receive. I love to eat and I have no problem with spending good money on good food. However, I do have a problem with not getting enough of what I order but plenty of stuff I can make at home (i.e. white rice). And the parking is absolutely the WORST. Now the parking and the size of the place can't be helped because as far as I can tell, there isn't any surrounding land to purchase so unless they are planning to move, at the very least, they could give you more of what you paid for.

There is no other restaurant in Los Angeles that has Red Beans and Rice like Harold and Bell's. Always order them, with anything you order...you'll never be disappointed. I'd love to know how they make them. I would eat every night at this wonderful restaurant if I didn't care about my weight. The crab cake sandwich is to die for. The fish is unbelievably fresh and the the warm, cozy and inviting ambience makes coming to this establishment all worth the trouble of driving through the traffic to get there. I love the service and the servers (all of whom have been there forever) and the light and friendly attitude is contagious. I love the bar with locals hanging out and having a drink, watching a college or professional game of some sort and everyone cheering...very cool. This excellent 'comfort' food is just plain fabulous and consistent....I love this place because it never changes. I can count on it being the same every single time I go in. The portions are huge.
Every time I go with friends or family I feel like I've stepped into a New Orleans restaurant with the best food in town. An absolute gem of a restaurant in the middle of Los Angeles. What, seriously, could be better than that?

I'm from down south, so maybe that's why I'm surprised at the prices of this place. I was told that it was an upscale soul food haunt, but I've never had to pay so much for a soul food dinner. Aside from the price though, the food was tasty and the portions are large. It's a nice place to go, but it might not be a great value.

I love food. And for $30 a plate I expected Harrold's and Belles msut be amazing. The food was ok but it was not worth the price. I went with a group of 6 people and no one was happy with their food. I felt so bad I payed for everyones dinner since I chose the place. We had gone to the House of Blues to have dinner a few weeks earlier and we absolutely loved the food and the prices there were half what they charge at H & B and the plates are bigger. At H & B I ordered the jambalaya and got a small litte bowl with rice hardly any meat in sight. My friend ordered the Shrimp creole and she got 6 shrinps on top of a bunch of white rice same goes for the shrimp scampi. Not even the cajuned seasoned rice just plain white rice. My cousin ordered fried frog legs and they were just fried in plain batter there was nothing worth $30 for that plate. What happened to the Cajun Spices. I would not recommend this place at these prices. If you want Great Cajun, Huge servings without breaking your wallet I suggest the House of Blues in Sunset. The restaurant atmosphere at House of Blues add on to the Cajun theme. Enjoy

Let me start by staying that I like the food at Harold and Belle's. Because I like the food, we made reservations for my book club which consisted of 20 women to go there and celebrate. Reservations were made way in advance. When we called to confirm the reservation and to discuss details for our 10 year celebration, they told us they gave our reservation away to a party of 8 people. When asked why, they told us that it was due to the fact that there was no deposit made so that the room technically was not ours. Trying not to go off, we informed the business that when the reservations were made, it was never mentioned that a deposit was needed and if so, that would have been taken care of.

Remember this is a celebration for 20 folks.

Well we tried to support black owned establishments and it is with this type of foolishness that you wonder why bother.

Exceptional customer service is what determines where I will spend my money.

Let me close by saying we took our celebration to El Chollo's. The bill was about $600.00. The waiter received a tip over 20% and everyone in the group was very happy with service, food and the fact they they were able to accomodate a large party at the last minute.

Harold & Belles is one of my family's favorite restaurants. We especially enjoy the seafood combo. But be warned, the portions are huge. The seafood is never overcooked, is seasoned perfectly and is always fresh. We joke that they must have live fish swimming in tanks in the kitchen because that's just how fresh the seafood tastes. Yummy! I typically shy away from potato salad, but make an exception here. They do a pretty decent job on their potato salad. Their chowder is excellent! Not too thick, not to runny. Not overwhelmed with too many potatoes, and just the right amount of clams. You taste the delicate blend of celery and other spices used in the chowder.

The ambievance is always upbeat and fun. Lots of good energy. The service can be slow sometimes, but is consistently friendly. We've been going there for years, and have noticed they do not have high turnover with their servers.

The drinks are never watered down. As a matter of fact, they're pretty potent, but delicious. I'm not a big bread pudding fan, but have made an exception here. They actually do a really decent job on bread pudding!

Only drawback would be the parking. They do have valet parking, but it can get a little packed in at times. But the valet employees are always courteous and nice. Highly recommended, especially for big eaters and/or for large groups. Reservations are a must!

In a neighborhood where one wonders if there are any good sit-down restaurants at all, Harold and Belle's is a gem. There is a prerequisite: you must not be on a diet or have any known heart blockages... The food is very tasty and don't even bother to avoid the fried stuff. If you don't eat fried food very often and you want to indulge, do it at this place because you will not regret it. We went on a weekday with reservations for four. We had clam chowder, crab cakes, spicy chicken winglets and soft shell crab entrees. The corn batter was perfectly crisp and tasty and the corn on the cob was also very good. The clam chowder borders too salty, but did not bother me much. Mashed potatoes were very rich and the red beans and rice even more so which is overwhelming for me, but may suit some. We didn't try any desserts because the portions are very huge and we were stuffed so if you have a sweet tooth, pace yourselves. Count on leftovers and don't see the entree price as a deterrent. This is fried food that actually did not give me any heartburn after which is a mark of artistry. I am a whole foods/farmer's market/eat healthy all week kind of person, so this place is a luxury I don't often enjoy. This is no greasy-spoon and there is a classy old-world feel to the place from another era. Atmosphere was relaxed and could also be a fun date place, especially on a live music night. Very old southern comfort. Staff is friendly and quick and the host was also very nice and warm. I will definitely return for lunch one of these days. Valet is convenient for busy nights.

We have been to Harold and Belle's twice and both times the service was amazing! Their Gumbo was amazing! The Spicy Crawfish Popcorn Po-Boy was enormous and tasty! The Jumbalaya was a creamy masterpiece! The Pork chops with Red Beans and Rice was delicious! The Shrimp and Crawfish Etouffee was stupendous as well! The Fried chicken and Clam Chowder were also delicous. If we have to drive out of the way, we always order extra entrees or sides. This is the best Creole/Cajun food we have found in the Los Angeles area. We have tried many. Many do only one thing well. Harold and Belle's does EVERYTHING well. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get and for the quality of food. Well worth the drive!

... that actually still lives up to the hype. Delicious creole and southern food in gigantic proportions. A wonderfully stocked bar that mixes stiff cocktails that rev up an already lively party scene. No matter what part of the country you're from you'll recognize the real soul food going down at Harold and Belle's!

where do i begin? first off, the portions are HUGE! i ordered the grilled pork chops with rice and beans -- it came in TWO PLATES -- one for the 3 chops, and one overflowing with rice and beans. i thought the chops were done nicely and the beans were really, really yummy! someone else got the catfish dinner and it came with 10 or so pieces -- and again, it was really, really good. the shrimps, apparently, were also good. i had the peach cobbler for dessert and the ice cream was good; but, i thought the cobbler was a little bit over average. our server was also very nice, friendly, fast, helpful with questions and pleasant -- someone who has manners -- it makes me want to send all servers in los angeles to her for a crash course on what service should be. i would definitely go back!!!!

The neighborhood is not the most glamorous, but since they have a big valet parking lot, you don't have to worry about getting into trouble. We definitely stuck out as first timers to harold and bell's when we walked in. But everyone was really friendly and we were soon enjoying our southern fare. The portions are definitely huge and impossible to finish. The interior is nice, but I wouldn't say first class, like some of the trendy places in hollywood. So if you think you are going to get a fancy martini with a twist of fruit, I would go elsewhere. But the atmosphere is great and comfortable, I would think it is great for groups as well.

This is by far the best Cajun/Creole resturant me and my husband have come across. Harold & Belle's seems so out of place in the area it is in. You would think it would be a resturant in a fancy neighborhood. Don't be fooled. This place is worth going too. It can get a bit crowded, but the wait it worth it. They have a pretty good menu with anything from sandwiches-frog legs. Their jamabalaya is to die for! Ever peice just melts in your mouth. And the portions are quite large as well. I've never been able to finish the big dish of jambalaya each time we've gone. Top your meal off with a nice glass of wine and you're set.

I'm from the South, and this is the most authentic Southern food I've had in L.A. I had the shrimp and crawfish etouffee, and it was pretty awesome. The clam chowder was also some of the best I've ever had. It was a little on the pricey side, but the portions are huge. The servers were friendly, but rarely came by our table. But overall, it was a good experience. I would definitely go back.

I love their Crawfish Etoufee and I order the same thing everytime I go there. There's a bar at the entrance and a small live band playing in the front. It's definitely nicer and larger than it looks from the outside and has valet parking. I love going there, but because my boyfriend's a conservative Asian guy and the dining crowd is almost 100% African American (I have nothing against them, please don't get me wrong), he's always reluctant to go with me, although he does admit the food is good. It's not that he's racist or anything of that sort, it's just that he feels like an oddball in the restaurant since we're usually the only Asian people in there and he feels he doesn't belong. But if it were just me, I'd care less because the food is totally irresistible and the waitresses are very nice. The customers seem to be a wealthy crowd (sometimes famous) and the setting is classy.

I'd say their prices are in the mid to high range, but you get A LOT of food in your plate. So proportionately, it's not that expensive at all. I do wish that they offer smaller portions for less so that I can try a variety of things w/o spending a fortune. For those w/o a monstrous appetite, I'd recommend sharing an entree w/someone else.

PROS: Incredibly delicious Cajun-style entrees
CONS: Lack of diversity in the restaurant, high price for huge dishes

There is no better Cajan food outside of Lafeyette, LA, I insist. However, this place is the real deal. The gumbo was loaded with Cajun sausages and seafood, but most importantly, it tasted like gumbo. They don't skim on anything. Every food item in here is loaded with ingredients that were cooked just right. The crawfish etoufee had so many crawfish that every bite was heavenly. The fried catfish was so crispy on the outside and moist in the inside that I wondered if they had a tank swimming with catfish in the kitchen. The price is a little high for Cajun food, but they made it up with over-sized portions. This is a great restaurant! (We had so much food that I didn't order the oyster po' boys. I shall return.)

I grew up eating cajun food, and have been searching for an excellent restaurant to enjoy my perrenial favorites at, and I recently gave Harold and Belle's a try. While it may not seem to be fair to judge an entire menu off of one item, I'm a firm believer that any Cajun restaurant's food can be based on the quality of the Gumbo. And I have to say, it was amazing! The portions were so big, we weren't able to eat much of our entrees. Leftovers are always good though!

The food was delicious and in large portions. Although we got there pretty late on a busy Saturday night without a reservation but we were surprised that we were sitted very quickly. The service was great and we had a wonderful time. I was so happy with the service that I am considering having Harold & Belle's cater my wedding.

I have been to Harold and Belle's Restaurant on numerous occasions, and the thing that strikes me most is the generous amount of food that you get with your meal. I usually leave with a doggy bag, and the folks here are always ready to oblige with one. Also, the food is home-style, and tastes like it was made by the owner right on the spot. Cajun oriented, this place is comfy and roomy inside. Prices are in the medium to high range, but you don't get cheated on portions for the price. I recommendthe pork chops with red beans and rice.

I've heard alot about this place and after going a couple times I wouldn't say I recommend it. The food is great. No question about that, but the service always overshadowed the experience both times for me. Bad service once is somewhat understandable, but the two times I went the staff was unfriendly, apathetic even, and the food took forever. If you can look past that, the food is wonderful.

I love this place. The portions are huge. The food is great. And while the service can be slow at times, the waitstaff are so friendly. They made me feel comfortable and at home. (I especially loved being called, "Sweet pea"!) I took eight co-workers here for lunch one time--all with varying degrees of Southern food experience/knowledge. Each and every single one of them loved it. It can be somewhat pricey but I think it's worth it.
P.S. I was in Savannah once and talked to a Savannah native about Southern food. I told her I was from LA. She told me she'd been in LA once--and this was the only restaurant in LA that came close to the real deal.
