I ate here with a friend and was very impressed with their lunch menu. I had salad and she had a turkey pannini and they were both wonderful. They had great dessert selections too. A fun lunch day out.

This is the place for the ladies who lunch. Wonderful salads and sandwiches on the lunch menu and a tempting assortment of desserts and baked goods. Also nice for a morning coffee and treat. They serve a full dinner menu (largely different from the lunch menu).

Seating can get crowded, particularly during the summer, but they will take reservations, or make you your meal to go.

Delicious sandwiches and bakery items. Very upscale bakery with friendly and efficient service. It's small and popular so can get crowded, but they also have some outdoor seating and a small counter with bar stools.

Tartine serves soups, salads, pannini and tartine sandwiches, and has a wine bar with 20 selections from around the world by the glass or bottle.

Tartine is a little cafe with a sophisticated look. I was blown away by the intense flavor and texture found amont the food there. It is a relaxing place for pastry, coffee or a light meal. Tartine has beautiful natural light, and expanses of creamy walls accented by Wayne Thiebaud's pastel dessert pictures.

The strongest part of the menu is the sweets.

There's no dessert list. The owners want you to come in and see what Massey has created fresh each day. You're likely to find strawberry and vanilla or savory goat cheese and chive scones, sour-cream coffee cake, creme brulee, cookies and coconut macaroons that form little cones. And there's always some flavor of cheesecake, such as caramel pecan, pumpkin or chocolate mousse.

With a name like Tartine, I expected to be delighted by the namesake menu item, but was extremely disappointed by the elemenatry nature of the Gorgonzola tartine I tried. It could have been put together by a 4th grader. it was simply gorgonzola cheese crumbles, pear slices and a little dressing drizzled on top of a roll (that wasn't even crisp like a baguette). Boring. This was accompanied by a simple salad. So basically, I had a salad in a roll accompanied by a salad. Lame. I tried my fellow diner's quiche. Again boring and relatively flavorless, but better than the Tartine. I thought, ok maybe dessert will redeem this restaurant, but again disappointing. We had a guava cheesecake which didn't have an inkling of guava taste to it. Perhaps drizzling a guava coulis on top would have brought out the guava flavor more or been a better accompaniment, but no, they drizzled this cheesecake with a carmel sauce. Completely overpowered the dessert and didn't work. Some positive notes: nice wine list, beautiful view and pretty atmosphere. The best quiche, desserts, & artisanal bread, and overall casual breakfast/brunch/lunch place I have found in SD so far is Bread & Cie in Hillcrest. Not as pretty of a locale as Tartine, but the food is beyond compare.

Pros: view, atmosphere, wine list

Cons: food, dessert
