This place has a huge variety of Japanese food. I've never been to the food court but it's always crowded so I figure it must be good. Prices are a little high but some things you can't find anywhere else.

Coming to San Diego from Tokyo, I had a real need to find a quality Japanese market. Local stores such as 99 Ranch Market almost exclude every kind of Japanese ingredient.

Finding Mitsuwa Market has been a coupe. The prices are high, but not unfair. The selection is really good. They have one of the only shops that serve Japanese ramen inside, as well as a Japanese bookstore and other small shops.

On the downside, their rice is a bit expensive, and their fresh fried good and meals are a bit weak... although their katsudon is really nice and not too expensive. And it's always busy. To top it off, it's layout is in the classic Japanese design--busy, crowded, and narrow.

Overall, it's the place to go for Japanese groceries in San Diego.

PROS: selection, prices
CONS: atmosphere, crowds

If you're looking for tempura, udon, mochi ice cream, ready-made bento boxes and sushi, japanese hair and beauty products, etc. this is the place to go. Mitsuwa Marketplace has all different Japanese specialties ranging from snacks to grains to produce to other goods. You can get food prepared already or get items to make your own authentic Japanese meal. The best part is that there are little stores/sections inside like a Sanrio area, beauty supplies area and kitchen tools even. Some of the stuff is a little pricey but you can't find it anywhere else!

Mitsuwa has everything you need to make Japanese (and other) dishes, including the actual dishes. Inside is a grocery store, bookstore, tablewares, restaurant, and convenience-type stores. But the best thing is that everything is half the price of what you would pay at your local grocery store and they don't have everything you need.
