Hello Coaches:

I lived in Ventura twice-- once in the early 80's and then later in the early 90's. I really liked Ventura for the same reasons that people like Santa Barbara; only then, Ventura was more working class. I wanted to make Ventura my permanent homestead except the economy forced me to relocate.

I could walk to the Bench Warmer and it was great. I fell in love there once in the 80's and I could tell it was true love because the woman who first invited me there decided to wear very little and she bought the drinks. NO JOKE- She was attractive and 'intelligent'.

She went away too fast. But when I came back 8-10 years later, I made sure I could walk to the Bench Warmer. The crowd was great. My recollection is that the Bench's tarbender had recently won 50 Grand in the lottery and had bought a Corvette with the money. I don't remember his name but when you walked in he always said Hello Coach!!

My favorite nights were when we would watch the late-night laundry across the street. The tarbender had a pair of binoculars and the laundry's pay phone on speed-dial. When it was appropriate, the crowd would call the laundry and invite gals over for a drink. I remember two rookie Oxnard elementary teachers who became regulars. For all I know, they could still be regulars, which is a good thing.

The only down-fall is that the Fuzz watched the place when Humans left. The MAN is always around because they are not huMANS.

Twenty years and kids interfered with my homesteading plans. Now I am in rural Mendocino County and it's reputation is relatively true-- the ganja is ubiquitous and the humans open.

Still, Canada might be next. Enjoy the Bench.

This place is hilarious! The bar is awesome, and they have darts which makes for a fun night out. Cheap happy hour and drinks keeps my office coming back. It's small, the bartenders are awesome, and it's quite the unique crowd. Come for cheap beer - and darts!

I've been going to the Bench Warmer for close to 20 years and in that time it has changed very little. It's definetly a neighborhood regular's kind of place. Newcomers are welcome though, if you're female maybe a little too welcome as there are a few hard core drunks that pester the ladies. There's darts and a pool table but you won't find any food, dancing or live music. Thank God they got rid of the karaoke, it was brutal. The bench is a good place to go for a drink and relaxing.

Pros: Safe, quiet.

Cons: Quiet, some drunks.
