I have been a member for the past three years. I liked Gerrish before, but I LOVE it now. All of the staff are so friendly and helpful. The people working at the Grill went out of their way to accommodate my son's food allergies. I love having the choice to bring food from home or buy at the Grill. Having the TV's with the sports package gets my husband there more often. They now have security in the parking lot. Seems like the new management has addressed all of the previous concerns. Love it! Hope they don't raise the price because it is already very high.

Having driven past Gerrish for 20 years, it was time to stop in and check it out.
Amazing facility and staff. Some people who left prior negative reviews must have an axe to grind, or have not been there recently. This place is clean, well laid-out and feels like a mini-vacation every time we visit.
We read the reviews here beforehand and were slightly put off until we actually visited firsthand.

Pro: Renovated, new management, updated facility including BBQs, TVs, good food court, many lifeguards on duty all the time, well-laid out facility that is not too big

Con: Expensive

Gerrish Swim and Tennis is looking great. The new management is a breath of frest air and much needed. The 2010 season looks to be filled with exciting events and new fresh club.

Upon entering the grounds @ Gerrish Swim and Tennis Club you immediately recognize that this is a wonderful place for family fun. 2010 holds in store many new and exciting events for Gerrish members. I will sign up early this year! Meet the new "Director' what a treat!!! Stop in for a visit... the office has been opening by 10am, as the Staff prepares for a new season.??

Gerrish has a BIG problem with cars in the parking lot being broken into. It has been a problem for at least two years but all they do is post warnings that immediately blow over in the wind. They need a security guard or a survelance camera at least.

All in all Gerrish is a great place but DO NOT join until they get serious about this problem.

I love Gerrish, we have been members for 3 years and I must say it is a great place to learn how to swim. My kids are on the swim team and love the coaches. The coaches and lifeguards are well trained and very good to the kids. Kelly is easy to deal with just ignore her, the paperwork was easy and once you pay you don't have to deal with management at all. I would much rather have the ability to bring my own food and beverages than have to spend money on the same menu over and over. Overall a great experience.

I worked at Gerrish the last 2 years, and think I can fairly give the pros and cons for anyone looking to join.

For starters, the club is very well taken care of on a day to day basis. The staff of lifeguards work hard each day before the club opens vacuuming and maintaining the pools. The clubs manager Kelly (attempts to) micromanage the facility, and appoints lifeguard supervisors who take on a large amount of the workload around the club, namely training the lifeguards, and keeping the club running smoothly. The barbeques and dining area are pretty cool, but only one of the two tennis courts is a real option. As far as applications and payments are concerned, you will have to deal directly with Kelly, who I'd generally advise you to avoid.

The supervisors and office girls are very helpful if you have any non-financial questions or concerns. The lifeguards and supervisors are both well-trained, and the only common concerns are rattlesnakes that will occasionally stray into the club. The pools are also strongly chlorinated, to keep the pools clean with the amount of kids going in and out, so if you have sensitive eyes; goggles or good luck!

In summation, this is a fun and safe club, though the rate for the full 6-months is quite steep. Avoid the frumpy manager if you can, and take advantage of having helpful employees!

We've been members for going on 10 years and have rejoined this year. Gerrish is a great place for the price! The teens who work as life guards are very lucky to have those jobs, talk about cushy! Overall, they do a good job lifeguarding (I was an LA Co lifeguard), but tend to try to close up the pools and club earlier than they are supposed to because they want to go out. When members complain, the manager, Kelly, sets it right. I've found her to be responsive to any issues I've had, and very easy to work with. It is patently false that they have been understaffed and the manager was working as a lifeguard.

There are 3 pools, a covered pool for kids under 5, a large pool for laps, diving and playing, and the play pool with a slide, etc. There are two tennis courts, and a camp for kids. Most of the families have been there for many years, the kids play while the parents hang out in the adult jacuzzi and chat or barbeque on the grills.

There is not a bee problem unique to Gerrish - the bee population is typical of the area. There are not several bee stings per day -- my kid attracts bees and is sensitive to stings, so I'm well aware of the situation. Yes, there have been snakes at the perimeter, the club backs up to Eaton Canyon -- everyone around here has snakes in their yard, including me.

As far as thefts, there were a few, nothing major, but stopped after an employee was fired. They posted flyers around the club so everyone was aware of it, rather than keeping us in the dark I've seen done elsewhere.

We also belong to ATCC, but Gerrish is a more fun place and the price is reasonable. It's a place to relax, have a nice meal outdoors, and know that your kids will be safe.

I used to work as a lifeguard at Gerrish and believe me when I say that the comments are true about the discrimination that goes on there, the thing to recognize is that the manager is two faced and talks about the members as soon as they are out of earshot. I would know because one of my duties was to work the office window. The lifeguards basically keep that club running while the manager comes in late and leaves early nearly everyday of the season and surfs the internet during the short time she is there at only getting up to use the bathroom. Also, while I was working there, about seven or eight cars were broken into that weren't even in the street but in the club's parking lot (which happens a lot since the lot can only hold about 40 to 50 and fills up very quickly) and the other guards told me it happens every year during the season. In addition there is a bad bee problem which results in several kids per day getting stung during the busy part of the season. On the upside, the grills and lounging areas are nice..One example of the ridiculous things that go on here is this: Near the end of the season several guards quit because they were fed up with the manager due to ridiculous schedule changes. This caused the club to be understaffed and so the manager would sit out on a lounge chair with the office phone as a fill in guard. This woman is in her late 50's to mid 60's, not trained by Redcross or Ellis, no whistle, and is about 300 pounds. If there was a member that needed rescuing she would not be able to do it.Pros: Friendly lifeguards, clean pools, grills/loungingCons: Terrible management, bees and snakes, car break-ins/theft, discrimination, overpricedDo not give this place your time and business

I was a member of Gerrish for 9 years. While going through a divorce my enrollment check bounced and the manager refused to accept my cashiers check and wouldn't let me join for the season. "She said to complicated." After 9 yrs of membership and the place of comfort for my kids during a horrible time, she said NO! The woman has no heart! let me know when you replace her.

We have been members of Gerrish for over 10 years and continue to enjoy the Club even with our kids now teenagers and in college. Like any club it has its occasional problems and areas to be dissatisfied about, but overall it is still a good value. Management can be a little cold and authoritarian, but what matters are that the lifeguards are attentive and well trained and the facilities are clean and well maintained. The claims of a discriminatory atmosphere are not true. We are a Latino family and have never felt any type of animosity from anyone, including management. There are many other Latino, Asian, Armenian, African American members and it is not dominated by any one group. One benefit that we believe distinguishes it from other clubs like ATTC is that one can bring their own food and alcohol and is not relegated to using a snack bar or Club food only since there is no restaurant or snack bar. There is ample refrigeration, BBQs and tables most of the time, although it can get a little crowded on holidays. The swim team is a great resource for children and is not a hyper competitive experience but welcomes all levels of abilities. We continue to enjoy the social atmosphere and people we have met at Gerrish. Gerrish has not changed in my view over the 10+ years that we have been members and is still a good value, even considering that it is only open from April-October.

I grew up at the Gerrish swim club and it saddens me to hear such negative things. I have wonderful memories of the club. There was so much for kids to do and we hated to leave when it was time for it to close at night but looked forward to the next morning when we could start the fun all over again. I am now 47 and have kids of my own and was looking into having them be a part of the club history. I really hope it hasnt changed that much.

My grandchildren love to go to Gerrish. So what if doing the paperwork, dealing w/the management took a little time? We are going for the kids, not for the management. Lifeguards are great, very attentive to the kids. People of all nationalities so not sure how someone determined it to be "discriminatory" And for the blogger who wants to remain anonymous, why would anyone pay attention to someone who doesn't have the courage to stand behind what they say?

The club is poorly managed and a nightmare to deal with paperwork or money with the manager, however the lifeguard supervisors are wonderful to work with and are always very vigilant. They do a good job enforcing rules and helping the members with whatever they need. I feel safe to let my children swim at this facility and enjoy spending summer afternoons here, once I have made my way past the office.

This place is a discriminatory nightmare - not the place you woudl want to have your children grow up around. Do you really want to give your hard earned money to a place (and a bigot owner) which discriminates against local Pasadena families - think again beofre your spend! Don't join.

Gerrish has three pools -- 2 of which are geared to children. One is for toddlers and the other has a jungle gym with water slide and other toys for kids. The main pool has some lap lanes and then other general play area. On the weekends, the place is packed with families.
There are also two tennis courts -- though one seems to be dedicated to basketball most of the time.
The club has a number of grills and picnic tables but no snack bar. Lots of local restaurants deliver, however.

PROS: great for kids
CONS: slightly expensive
