Koji at the Market Street location is a true artist. His cuts are beautiful! I have never received anything but the best from this salon.

Well, I just had a terrible experience with Dearinger before I set foot in the door. I had heard from two long time customers that this was a wonderful place and to ask for Kate. I bought a $40 Groupon certificate for $100 worth of service. I wrote down a 3:30 appointment. I DID NOT receive a reminder call. The day of my haircut I received this call from the salon that I my appointment was for earlier in the day. When I called to find out the problem, I spoke to David who told me that the "fine print" of the coupon states that if I miss an appointment, the discount coupon is forfeited. I feel this is a bit of a scam. Did they generate too many
new customers? How did I get the wrong time and never get the reminder call? It's not so much the money is the way that David treated me. He was very dismissive and rude. I called back to ask for Dan the manager. So far no response. I can't really talk about the capabilities of the various stylists....as I said this all happened to me as a "potential" customer.

This is the worst salon I have ever been to. My advice is to run as fast as you can away from Dearinger. Your hair will thank you. The owner does not care about his clients at all. Dearinger should be ashamed posing as a nice salon!!

first of all i dont typically write reviews online about the places i receive services from, however, this time i wanted other people to know that Dearinger does not live up to all the hype. i was a customer of Dearinger for over a year and referred many new customers to them - which i regret now. Crystal the salon manager is completely unprofessional and did nothing to address my concerns after receiving a less than satisfactory highlight. She clearly does not care about client retention. I dont know why i kept going back to the salon, probably the convenience of location, but every time i left i was upset with my services and more upset for swallowing a huge bill on top of receiving services I was not happy with. They schedule appointments basically on top of one another so you might have your hair washed by one person then your hair brushed by another then cut by another and dried by another. All in all that makes for a very impersonal experience - more like a car on an assembly line just waiting for the next worker to attend to me. So not only was my colorist overbooked and never on time they left during my service to consult on another client - very, very unprofessional. This is the usual routine for this salon - clearly Mark Dearinger is not concerned with quality and building true client relations rather pushing as many people through the salon as possible and spitting them out just as fast. Not to mention every time someone washed my hair, who was never the person who had colored my hair, washed it so hard it became so insanely tangled it took the hair brusher like 40 minutes just to detangle the mess they had created. And most importantly the salon services i had done were not that great - i was never satisfied and left just feeling angry. Not to mention every time i went to salon i spent 3+ hours there, which is just too long. With all the overlap in booking i spent a great deal of the time waiting for the next "assembly worker" to address my hair. So instead of feeling good about my hair i was just ready to heck out of the salon (it usually was not until i was home that i realized i was also unhappy about my hair). On top of that the salon workers are constantly throwing new magazines on your lap - which have other people cut hair in the margins like they had swept the floor with them - absolutely disgusting. And on top of the poor service the stylist are constantly trying to get you to buy products from the salon. It was really distracting and made the situation awkward. Most people have a hard time spending 50 more dollars on some fancy shampoo after spending 150 dollars for a less than par salon service. I am all about giving people a second or even third chance to make things right but Dearinger does not seem too concerned with keeping loyal clients. This is amplified by the salon manager Crystal's unwillingness to address customer's concerns.

I went to the La Jolla branch. Had a cut with foil highlight (half head). Be sure to print off the new customer special discount from their website, so you can try them out without spending a fortune. (20% off cuts, 30% off color). My cut was $43 with discount, $60 for the highlight.

I saw Laura for the cut, she's very precise and seems to know about the trends. Everyone here wants to do the best job for your hair type (I have fine hair). So don't expect them to give you a bouffant do if your hair will never do it naturally.

My colorist Kathleen is very easy to talk to, however I really didn't notice much difference in color compared to my natural shade. She put some blonde & strawberry blonde streaks in. I suppose I did say to not do anything too bold for my skin color (I have rosy skin).

I don't know why prior reviewers got such bad service. I went in on a Friday afternoon and they were very attentive and un-rushed. Both of my stylists did their own work entirely (didn't pawn me off to a trainee). It's not a super-fancy salon with wine, but their prices aren't that high either. Very low-key atmosphere.

Pros: good cut, service, friendly

Cons: color was too subtle, so be specific about what you want

I have been going to the dearinger in La Jolla for about 2 and half years and cant see myself going anywhere else. I don't always go to the same stylist since everyone can follow a simple line and even add to it to make it even better. The front desk staff is awesome to, they always know my name and remember little things about me as in how my daughter is doing? Kelly is great with things like that. Its just a great friendly place to go that always makes me feel comfortable and has me leave looking like a million bucks OK well maybe at lease 2gs :)

At first, I really liked this salon. I do like my haircut, but I feel thrown around. They always seem HORRIBLY disorganized. My friend and I joke to arrive 30 minutes late and you'll be perfect. The last four times, my stylist has had someone else finish my hair. One time, the receptionist blowdried my hair and didn't even notice that I was flinching everytime she touched my head, it felt like a mild beating. (I have also had the gentleman that appeared to be there just to sweep hair finish my blowdry). Last time, my stylist accepted a walk in over finishing the blowdry himself. They were 30 minutes late with my friends appointment so they offered her a conditioning treatment that they made HER pay for! Not even at a discount! I DO think that they are very skilled stylists, but seriously lack service. Sadly, I'm not going back.

I went to Deringer for a couple of times since I moved from L.A. My stylist in L.A is great and told me what kind of color and the proportion to mix so that I can color my hair the same color in San Diego. But the third time I was at Deringer, David was out of my brand so he used a different brand of colour and added more ash tones to darken it; all without telling me... I ended up with dark unsatisfactory color. I only cut my hair once there and was not happy at all since, after describing to their "top stylist" how I wanted my hair cut, he went ahead and cut it completely the opposite way. I'm sorry to say I will not be back.

First time venturing out for cut and color in SD. La Jolla location to the point: not warm and fuzzy, in either decoration or service. Colorist and Cut did not talk to me at all- which I loved. Both did a great job. I would go back. Cheapest cut and highlights I've had in a long time!

I would have rated it even higher if they didn't have lame message answering the phone and if they paid more attention to decor, especially in their La Jolla store, which used to be nicer. Have a person pick up the phone! Get some plants or art!

The boys are cute to look at, but I've gotten better cuts, consistently, from Galena. I've even had color work there and have always felt well taken care of. Maybe it's because I tip well. HINT: When you pay Mark Dearinger himself to do your hair, traditionally you don't tip the owner, which makes his prices a little easier to take.

I came into the salon after reading reviews on-line and was extremely pleased with my haircut. Koji was very professional, listened to what I had to say and offered suggestions as needed. My hair is long and naturally curly and he gave me the best hairstyle. My hair hasn't looked this good in over 5 years. I would highly recommend Koji to anyone interested in obtaining a great stylist!!

Great salon to go to if you want healthy hair! I waited a little longer than I would have liked to, but I got a great haircut. Next time I will go for color.
