Ratings_icons BEWARE!

Leslie L.

I read the other reviews about him and it confirmed my feelings. He is cold and indifferent to children and should find another profession. I will go with my first impression and instincts in the future where I or my children are concerned!!!

Ratings_icons Great!

Some of these reviews confound me -- if you don't like his manner, that's fair, but to say the office is "dirty and disgusting" and "overbooked"? Absolutely untrue! I've been taking my kids there for 6 years now and I'm always impressed with the cleanliness and efficiency of the office. I can honestly say that it's the most highly efficient medical office I've been to for anything in 20 years! The time of your appointment is the time you get seen. As far as his manner, well, he isn't cuddles and coddles, but he is very professional and kind. My daughter has bad enamel and has had to have a few crowns and extractions, and they have all been done extremely well and she has no fear of going to the office. I do have well-behaved children, that's all I'll say.

Ratings_icons Not So Bad As Some of These Reviews Would Lead You To Believe

My child has been a patient of Dr. Serxner for nine years, (since he was 3 years old), and I understand the negative reviews. Dr. Serxner is definitely not the warmest guy -- he strikes me as sort of obsessive/compulsive, like someone who runs marathons -- however he is a FINE dentist. You just can't take his brusque manner personally! He's almost a Saturday Night Live character -- it's kind of hilarious how anal he is. In any case, for the 15 minutes every six months we see him, it's fine. And he is clearly very competent. I will also say my child has never had a cavity, and is (no lie) an exceptional teeth brusher... his orthodontist (Dr. Skip Hudson) always mentions it!

Ratings_icons Wonderful Dentist -- Great with Kids

Jaimi Z.

Not sure about the other reviewers or how they manage their children, but I think Dr. Serxner is wonderful. I have a child that is high functioning autistic and I have had problems with other dentists in the past. We have been going to Dr. Serxner for over 5 years and he is exceptional. He is direct, but VERY GOOD with the kids. Wouldn't even think about taking the kids somewhere else.

Ratings_icons Beware, he is cold & doesn’t console kids

Annie C.

Absolutely terrible. He is very rude even to the most well behaved children. They do less than five minutes of cleaning on my kids teeth. The office is disgusting and dirty, toilet is disgusting and gross. He over books patients. Worst of all, during his procedure he spoke down to my son and did not comfort him. My kid is no wimp he had multiple stitches on his eyelid and if he can handle that needle w/o crying then a simple cavity should be fine. The doctor was aggressive with him and my son was sore not from the procedure but from his roughness with him my own doc doesnt dare treat me like that. He is inhumane to the kids. Good for the parents whose kids like him, but for my kids never again. Beware, he is cold & doesnt console kids. Its frightening enough just to watch him, he is barbaric! I felt so bad for my son & the other kids who were crying too.

Ratings_icons Simply terrific!

Melanie K.

My 14 yr. old daughter has been going to Dr. Serxner since she was 3 years old. He is a terrific dentist and I could not disagree more w/ anyone who states otherwise. The thing that I like best about Dr. Serxner is that he speaks directly to my daughter. She is in charge of herself and he treats her as a mature human being. We always get the scoop after the appointment - yet, again, my daughter is always included .... there are no mysteries for her regarding her dental health. Additionally, the staff (even when there is turn over) is ALWAYS super nice and accomodating. We like Dr. Serxner so much, that even when we moved from the La Canada area to Valencia, we make the drive down, every 6 mos. for my daughter to have her check up w/ him. He is simply terrific, A+, and we highly recommend him!

Ratings_icons I love my dentist

Erica B.

I am twenty years old and have been going to Dr. Serxner since I was only four! He is super nice and understands that kids are scared when they go to the dentist. In my lifetime i have had about ten cavities filled, all by Keith, and everything went great for a cavity filling, which isn't supposed to feel great. On that note a previous poster stated that her son was making noise during his cavity filling and Keith got mad and it turned out the kid had to spit... well i call shananagins on you "anonymous," he keeps the sucky thing in your mouth during a filling so there is never a need to spit! Anyways Dr Serxner is the BEST dentist and he has the BEST staff!!! Nobody should hesitate to take their kid there, unless they don't really want a great cleaning and checkup. Oh and remember... I am not some mommy complaining about how he hurt my kid's feelings, I am one of many patients of Keith's that has been using him as my dentist for more than sixteen years.

Ratings_icons A wonderful pediatric dentist

Jennifer S.

I couldn't disagree more with the negative reviews of Dr. Serxner. He has always been so kind to my daughter and I, and because of this my daughter actually gets excited about going to the dentist! In addition, he has the most efficient medical office I've ever been to -- we are always in and out in 20 minutes with no waiting, and the office staff is so warm and friendly. He does stress good oral hygiene, but because of this my daughter has become a great at brushing and flossing, and anyway isn't this a dentist's job?

Ratings_icons BADside manner - negative reviews have disappeared!

Dr. Serxner may be skilled and accomplished but he could sure use a dose of humanism! He is terrible with kids, my kids NEVER want to go to him, in spite of the toys and arcade games! He is COLD and IMPATIENT and NASTY when kids behave like kids. He talks down even to the parents. When my kid had a filling, he chastised him so much I was hurt and angry. He doesnt let kids say that something hurts, that is looked upon as misbehaving and he immediately threatens that he will make mom go away. My husband wont even accompany the kids..cannot someone thaw out this cold fish??

Ratings_icons Not very good with children

Anonymous

We went to Dr. Serxner 3 times. Each time I found him to be condescending and cold to my son. He doesn't listen to what is going on with the child. He assumes the child is going to behave badly and has a pat response to any problem the child is having. For example, my 5 year old son was having a cavity filled in the chair and was making noises as best he could with a mouth full of stuff. Dr. Serxner sternly told him to calm down; that this is what has to be done, etc. . . I knew something else was wrong. "Do you have to spit?" "Uh, huh". That was all it was. On another visit my son started to cry. Dr. Serxner went into the whole routine again with a "tone" in his voice. All my son was trying to say was that the mint toothpaste stung him. I intervened to have him switch to cherry and he was fine. Dr. Serxner is probably a fine dentist, but he seems a bit jaded and not sensitive to children. We are switching dentists.

Ratings_icons Beware - Several NEGATIVE reviews were removed.

Anonymous

I was astonished to see that several negative reviews had been removed indicating Dr. Serxner's anger control issues. I'm not sure how they were removed but now, in addition to his temper and lack of respect for patients and their families, there is dishonesty. I am also disappointed by the previous reviewer who claimed that Serxner will only show you respect if you are diligent in your child's oral hygiene. This is absurd, simply because any parent who takes their child on a regular basis to a pediatric dentist in a family-oriented community is showing great responsibility and is undeserving of disrespectful behavior. The fact is this - kids get cavities and that does not equal neglect. I think I speak for most people when I say that bedside or "chair-side" manners are still very important. I am happy that we decided to find another dentist who treats us with the respect that EVERYONE deserves.

Ratings_icons Not Your Typical Dentist

Anonymous

My familys first experience with Dr. Serxner was intimidating, I must admit. Dr. Serxner was extremely structured in his approach even toward my young children. I did not feel confident that this was the best approach for a three and a four year old nor did I feel comfortable myself. In fact, I outsourced the task to my husband going forward. He had a similar reaction and did not want to return but somehow, like me, felt obligated to. After several years of being patients of Dr. Serxner we have discovered what that compulsion to return was all about. With Dr. Serxner it boils down to respect. Theres no two ways about it. If he doesnt respect you (which can be driven by a number of things; dishonesty, the neglect of childrens dental hygiene) you probably wont have a good experience. Dr. Serxner is an expert in his field. He is also fully invested in making sure your children understand and follow a disciplined regimen where it comes to dental hygiene. He has little tolerance for excuses, of which I am sure he has heard his share. The most important thing about Dr. Serxner is that while he may not instantly rub you with warmth, he will NOT be radiating sunshine as he continues to take your money on return business. Dr. Serxner seeks to ensure you understand what needs to be done, why it is important to do and that you are committed to what you say you are going to do. The education and understanding of it all is what matters to him and that my friends, is a great dentist. He has become a trusted and reliable source that we are always happy to see, children included.

Ratings_icons Very Unhappy!

K. J. | insider Insider | Rank: 26,805

We are very unhappy with the care that we received by Dr. Serxner. He has a short temper and a superiority complex. I work in pediatrics, have multiple college degrees, yet he still talked down to me as if I were some idiot parent who didn't know a toothbrush from a hairbrush. After watching certain attitudes, behaviors and mannerisms get worse over several visits, we decided to pull our children out of this practice and not return. I have asked three other dentists about him, and although they have all maintained a sense of professionalism by not saying anything negative, they have all sighed, rolled their eyes and smiled when they told me that they didn't feel that they should discuss the matter. That says more than enough for me! There are much better dentists in town, including several 'family' dentists who do really well with small children. (It should also be noted that several lower rated reviews have been removed from this site over the past year. Personally, this will be the third time that I have posted my review during that time.)

Ratings_icons One of the Best

Christopher N.

As a prospective dental student and dental hygienist, I have shadowed many different offices and my time with Dr. Serxner was the most valuable experience of them all. Dr. Serxner cares for his patients as if they were his own children. He and his staff are so friendly that even the most timid kids warm up to the idea of sitting in the dental chair within the first hour of arriving. Once in the chair, he never goes beyond the capabilities of the child. If the child will not sit still for the appointment, thats ok, hell take care of it another day. After shadowing for 6 months in his office, Ive seen that all his patients love him and never dread going to the dentist. They truly enjoy coming to his office and some of them dont leave when the parents call for them. Dr Serxner is a great pediatric dentist and I would love to work with him in the future as professionals and peers.

Ratings_icons Great Kids Dentist

David D.

We started going to Dr Serxner on a recommendation from our pediatrician. It was a great move for my kids. He has treated them with love and respect and humor for 15+ years. My oldest daughter is now 25 and still sees him for her exams. Let's face it...no one likes going to the dentist, but he has made it an enjoyable necessary evil. I highly recommend his services to our community, and now consider him a true friend.

Ratings_icons DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTIST!

Nancy E.

This dentist has a terrible reputation in the La Canada area, and there is a growing list of parents who are reporting him to the state board. He was not only rude and abusive to my children, but he was well known by the dentist I subsequently brought my children to after our terrible experience. I agree with the other review that he has an amazingly short temper, which is a bad characteristic when dealing with children. I have heard from many other dental professionals that they have no idea how he can stay in business with so many complaints against him. I personally know of more than 7 families who have all had similar nightmare experiences with this guy. I cannont express enough NOT to go anywhere near this office. He is anything but professional, and should be banned from pratcticing pedatric dentistry.

I have been coming to Dr. Serxner's office for about a year. I have a 7 year old handicapped son who is in special education. After seeing several Dentists no one was able to work with him. Working with special ED kids you need to have patience and love. I found love, patient and well trained who was able to treat him. I am thankful and grateful. God bless you.

Ratings_icons BAD experience here

Ann E.

When we first moved to this area, we tried this dentist. My son loved the pediatric dentist where we used to live, so I wanted to find another who specialized in kids. Dr. Serxner seemed OK, kind of like Mr. Rogers in a way. My son had a couple of visits for cleanings/xrays, which went smoothly. But the day he had to have 2 teeth pulled was a nightmare. Dr. Serxner became ANGRY and very IMPATIENT because my son was scared about the procedure. He ordered me out of the room and said I was only making it worse. That is NOT OK. By now my son was in tears, terrified - the dentist told his mother to leave? I SHOULD have left - along with my son - but I did not, I just wanted the whole thing to be over. After that appointment, I vowed never to go back.

Ratings_icons Best Dentist Ever

Rebecca W.

I am 21 years old and Dr. Serxner has been my dentist for the past 19 years. He says that when I turn 30 or when I have my first child, then I have to go to an adult dentist. Well, I dread that day. I would not want to go anywhere else. Dr. Serxner is so nice and makes people feel so comfortable. When I was a about 2 years old, the first time I went to him, I learned that day that the dentist was not a scary place. I will absolutely send all of my children there, no question. He is the best dentist around. He is very caring and he is great at making children feel brave and unafraid. I recommend him to anyone and everyone with children. Take it straight from one of his long time patients, me. He is absolutely, positively, without a doubt, THE BEST.

PROS: Caring, Gentle, Kind, Family-Oriented
CONS: None at all!!

Ratings_icons good dentist, nice guy

Charlie M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,398

The office has tons of old school arcade games. And little treat bags every time for the kids. I play asteroids while my kids are in the chair. Um -- I mean, I work hard on my laptop. Nice guy -- a little unrealistic, perhaps, on kids' brushing -- timing the kids every night? Ok, I do it maybe half the time. If Monica G says he's good, well then, he's good.

PROS: good dentist, nice guy, pediatric only, video games, treat bags
CONS: none
