Message from House of Prime Rib

House of Prime Rib sprawls over five rooms with comfy banquets, spacious tables, and fireplaces. There are two fresh fish dishes on the menu but we have been known for fine prime rib since 1949. We serve only the best beef available, the top two percent of all beef marketed. Although this incurs additional expense, our USDA Eastern corn-fed beef, aged for 21 days, is the most tender, juicy and flavorful beef available. The House of Prime Rib has been many times imitated but never duplicated.

The Scene
With its wingback chairs, thick carpets, brass-studded leather banquettes, wood paneling and fireplaces, the House of Prime Rib looks like a British country manor. Especially popular for special occasions, the restaurant has multiple dining rooms that are almost always crowded, usually with a family-oriented clientele that makes the trek from all over the city and greater Bay Area.

The Food
The name says it all. Although the menu offers a variety of traditional meat-and-potatoes dishes, the real focus is prime rib. The warm, juicy roasts are served tableside--showmanship is big here--from large aluminum carts that are wheeled continuously through the dining room. Entrees come with mashed or baked potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, horseradish and salad. Like the meat, salads are served tableside, with the greens and dressing tossed together in a spinning chilled bowl. A seafood entree is also available, varying each night according to season.

Key Points

  • Bar & cocktail lounge
  • Ribs & salad
  • Private dining

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - If you order either the House, English or King Henry VIII Cuts, you can get slightly slimmer seconds for free.

House of Prime Rib is great

by miles w. | insider Insider | Rank: 15,242

Love the House of Prime Rib. Definitely a go to place for special occasions and with out of town visitors. Had my usual - the English cut - and was not disappointed. First time I have ever made it to desert, but that was also excellent. Rather expensive, but worth it.

Ho Hum....Snore

by Booney E.

This place had a great prime rib but it appeared as if the staff was just a little to busy checking their cell phones to check to see if we needed any more wine. I wage much of my decision on the service being poor and not so much on quality of food.

Best prime rib in California

by Emma S. | insider Insider | Rank: 28,725

My family celebrates important life events in this place, so obviously I am a fan. The servings are huge, and you can always ask for seconds. My husband always takes advantage of this, and he comes out filled up and happy! I often spot quite a few 49er players here... seems like they get a good source of protein at this place!

Delicious!

by Elayna N. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,029

My family and I have been going to House of Prime Rib for special occasions for years! House of Prime Rib serves some of the most delicious and tender prime rib you will find. Not only do you get a slice of prime rib, but if you are still hungry, you can get multiple slices! The price is around $30+ a head and do not go here if you are not planning on eating the prime rib because the other dishes are not quite that good. The salad is amazing and they mix it right in front of your party. The creamed spinach is also very creamy and tasty! I recommend trying the bread with a little of the table salt they provide. Parking around here is hard to find so don't expect to find one right away. Also, I would say make reservations if you can because this place is always busy.

BEST PRIME RIB AND EXCELLENT SERVICE

by Stella Werley

I am from Texas and I can tell you that I know my beef. The House of Prime Rib serves the most tender and succulent prime rib that I have ever tasted! There are some restaurants that give you a small serving and charge you a fortune, but .the cost of the meal is reasonable in comarison to the large portions of meat and side dishes that you are served. The service is extremely friendly and efficient. Too bad that this is the only one in existence. Would love to have one in Texas. I heartily recommend this restaurant to everyone!

Pros: Best Prime Rib and excellent service

TOURIST TRAP

If you would like an evening of screaming across your table to your dining companions, surrounded by LOTS OF loud single man: well this is your place!
To make the dining experience even better : you can count on barmaid Jennifer (her personality is sort of a 19th Century Schoolmistress at a Catholic Nun's school)
Plus you have the patronizing austrian manager,to help you.
WALK !TO HARRIS STEAKHOUSE ! :QUIET, LOVELY ROOM,SUPERB FOOD & CLASSY SERVICE WITH A POLITE, FRIENDLY STAFF

Pros: Beef cuts are OK...not great

Cons: Noisy, crowded, rude employers

Old-school deliciousness!

by unzipped

This is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. Old-school charm, lush red leather banquettes, professional well-dressed waiters, a sweetheart of a maitre'd, and a great bar. The prime rib is succulent and done to a turn, just how you like it (they even offer yorkshire pudding, something you just can't find anymore)! Portions are large and the service is impeccable. We have our holiday dinner here with friends every year, and invariably everyone loves this place. It's expensive, but for special occasions you can't beat it.
Highly recommended.

Pros: Delicious food; sumptuous atmosphere

Cons: None--really

An oldy but a goody. Amazing Prime Rib.

by MrMoose111

This place hasn't changed since 1949. Dark style steak house like mood. Old red seats, fix ens that make you say, I remember eating that when I was a steak houses 20 years ago. The creamed spinach, yum. Lots of bacon flavor, the mash with the extras yum, wine selection is reasonable with the more expensive topping off around $110. The star of the show is the prime rib. Melt in your mouth goodness. Dinner for 4 was a bit over $300. A bit expensive but I guess for SFO not too bad. I'm impressed they don't serve french frys, even for kids.

Enjoy!

Pros: Prime Rib in a classic environment

Cons: Do the valet. Shady part of town at night.

Excellent prime rib!

by jen163

I've been here countless times and I absolutely love it. If you like prime rib, you've come to the right place! The portions are big, the meat is juicy and delicious, the salad is good (and I don't normally like salad), the creamed spinach is SO good!
BUT you must be patient with this place. It is very crowded, especially on Fridays and weekends. Get a reservation if you have more than two people in your party, otherwise you can just walk in. I've gotten reservations a few times and I noticed that you end up waiting anyway, so you might as well walk in, put your name down, and have some drinks at the bar. Shaken drinks are especially good because they give you the shaker with practically another drink's worth in it.

Here are some warnings for people without common sense (everyone who gives this place a rating of 3 stars or less) as well as a few overall comments:
1) This is the House of PRIME RIB. If you intend to order fish or chicken, DON'T come here.
2) The meals are at least $35 a person (definitely worth it to me), not including drinks (which are pricey as well) so cheapskates should steer clear.
3) The portions are quite large, yet if you finish your meat (and I always do) you get a extra thin slice for free. (The people who said the portions are small are pigs because I am always stuffed walking out of this place. And I'm not a skinny person!)
4) This place is crowded and obviously for a reason, so use your best judgment. The waitstaff is incredibly friendly every time I go, however I can imagine it's quite easy to get irritated in such a busy environment. I know that waiters and waitresses are there to serve you, but that doesn't give you the right to treat them badly. Be kind and courteous and you shall receive the same treatment.
5) This place is loud, so if you're looking for a quiet dinner, go somewhere else.

ENJOY! :)

Pros: prime rib, drinks, service

Cons: be prepared to wait regardless of reservation

Best prime rib in the world

by jsavell

This is the best prime rib I've ever had, but I love the sides even more! I've gone too many times to be wowed by the ritual, but the salad is the greatest. I vow not to eat too much bread, but the steaming sourdough is so good. And the creamed spinach is wonderful. Skip the mild and "sharp" creamy dressings offered- there are three more if you ask- hot straight, raw grated (which is sweet) and red grated pickled. Spear a piece of meat covered with the grated, spear a piece of Yorkshire pudding, dip in the au jus mixed with hot horseradish swallow and finish with a gulp of Sinskey pinot noir and you have the finest taste experience of a lifetime.

Some like tasting menus with every dish 2 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall, where you can't remember what you ate ten minutes later. I prefer repetition, with each bite reinforcing the memory of the last, making House of Prime Rib my favorite restaurant of all.

So if you want the best food in a restaurant that makes you feel special, you have found the place.

Pros: Great prime rib and sides, ambience

Cons: Wait even with a reservation

Seriously... the House of Prime Rib is that good.

by SDfoodaddict

Went to SF for the weekend and tried House of Prime Rib based on all the good reviews.... SCORE!!! The prime rib at this place left me and my wife determined to find a comparable prime rib joint in our home town (San Diego). Prime Rib was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I'm a horse-raddish fan and they had 3 and I had each one (mild, medium, and hot)... beware, the hot one is no joke... my sinuses almost exploded. The meal comes with sourdough bread and a salad with house dressing that was tasty. HERE'S THE KICKER... if you are NOT full after your prime rib, they will serve you another cut (WHAT?!...perfect gimic since the average eater will get SUPER full beforehand).

In addition, the service was great - friendly and warm. The atmosphere was relaxing and welcoming. House of Prime Rib is a guaranteed fulfilling dining experience. Enjoy.

Pros: Very good prime rib, lots of food, if your not full...get another slice on the house!

Cons: Reservations fill up early... call in way in advanced.

GREAT Prime Rib and salad!! A real part of San Francisco. People who don't like it either don't know great prime rib or are NOT SF Natives... It has been a tradition in our family for 30 years.

Cons: the wait

What a hoot!

by sesquialtera

This place was okay, but the salad ritual was hilarious! Spinning around a bowl of iceberg lettuce and tinned beets on ice cubes while sprinkling it with bottled garlic salt...and the results looked like they were being eaten for the second time! The waiter really seemed to enjoy it, although questions posed in the middle of his patter and choreography really seemed to throw him off track. The food was, again, okay. Much better to be had at half the price elsewhere, though. Still, the salad dance was worth the cost of admission. Take a camera, it's priceless! I still laugh my head off thinking about it!

Pros: Somewhat festive.

Cons: Could use a few velvet paintings.

What can I say? If you want the best Prime Rib ever, go to this place. Very friendly staff and great food. Too bad they book up so fast, but if you remember to make a reservation in advance, it is the best. A lot of excellent food for a good price. 8 Dollar Valet is also the cheapest in town. Cons: loud

Prime Rib Galore!!!

by baggyboy

My friend told me that they remodeled and have a new wine room and new bathrooms. So I went with a group of 6 and wow were we impressed! The wine room is the most beautiful thing in the city. Right in the center of the restaurant with glass walls, so you can see all their great wines they have there. The new bathrooms are great too, much more spacious and clean! The Prime Rib is awsome as always and the salad is getting better every time we go. Their dressing is the best! I always get two bottles to take home since they won't tell me the recipe. Friendly staff too! Can't wait to go back!!!

Not Worth the Hype

by sammikins

My family and I have been eating at The House of Prime Rib (HOPR) for my brother's birthday every year, for the last 15 years. Service has been slipping the last few years. However, this year (2008) the dining experience was so abhorrent we all agreed to NEVER return.

We made reservations 3 weeks in advance for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The whole party arrived 15 minutes early. We waited a total of 45 minutes past our reservations and complained numerous times before we were seated. Whoever heard of waiting when you already have reservations?! We made our complaints known to the manager and he knew that we were angry. He actually said "I will come back to speak with you when you have calmed down." I've never met a manager who cared so little about his customers and was unapologetic. I don't know what he said to the waiter because when the waiter came to take our orders he was condescending and rude, blatantly trying to rush us out.

The famous house salad was limp, soggy, and old - with telltale brown spots throughout the greens. While I understand beef is their specialty, the other entrees (chicken and fish), in the past, have at least been satisfactory enough to eat. On this visit, I ordered the sea bass. Like the salad, it was not fresh. In fact, when the waiter brought out the fish (with it's dome cover on), I could smell the "fishiness" before he even approached the table. After a few bites, I discovered the fish was still raw. To pacify us, the manager brought out complimentary desserts. Even that was terrible. The strawberries were hard and sour. The creme brulee was still cold (even beneath the caramelized top). The only dessert worth mentioning was the bread pudding.

I used to recommend HOPR to friends and family, but no longer. I heard that the 49er organization used to eat at HOPR regularly, and then they stopped going. Now I know why.

Pros: bread pudding

Cons: wait, management, service, seafood

It was okay, nothing special

by CYCYCYCYCYCYCY

It was my first time going to the House of Prime Rib this past Monday (3/3/08.) It was a spur of the moment so we did not make reservation. That was a mistake on my part cause we waited for over an hour and a half.
My expectations were higher since a friend recommended it. The place is nicely decorated, friendly atomsphere, and the salad was the highlight of the meal. The prime ribs was good, but not good enough for that price and the portions were not "Massive". Two person, two dinner and wine costed just a little under $100.

Pros: Atomsphere

Cons: Value

Worst We've Had, What Happened?

by Wizard32

I used to come to this place for special occasions when my wife and I lived in the SF Bay Area. However, since I moved to Tracy (about 60miles away), I haven't been back here for about 8 years. A lot has changed in those years, and unfortunately for the worse. I brought 8 of my friends and my wife last Saturday (02/18/08) for our valentine's celebration, even rented a limo as we wanted it to be special for our wives, and drove all the way from Tracy to have dinner here. We were all very disappointed, and I am throroughly embarrassed for taking them there. What happened to the old place? That night's service was cordial with but a bit of rudeness, and you can tell they were not genuinely polite. Our server (Jason) *tossed* yes, tossed a piece of yorkshire pudding into the plate of my friend's daughter, her plate being a foot out of reach. After being confronted with it, he said how else was 'he going to get the pudding in her plate?' given the size of the table. Very tacky for such a place that's supposed to be one of the better places to eat in SF. Also, I don't know what reviewers here refer to as 'large portions'? Each person in our party ordered a different item from the menu so I had a glimpse of these 'large portions'. Let's just say, I was not full when I finished. The English Cut is just paper-thin slices of meat (the premise being that some folks say that thinly-sliced prime rib is supposed to taste better). Yes I may agree to that, but one would think it would at least have the same amount of meat as the House of Prime Rib cut (same price of $34.85) but no -- and the House of Prime Rib cut was not even that large to begin with. My friend's daughter (18yrs old and petite) had this to say about her fish dinner, and this sums it all up: "This is it?". Disappointing. Very Disappointing. I'm not taking anyone there again, ever. We should have gone to our other place we were considering, Hs Lordship's accross the bay in Emeryville.

Pros: Ambience

Cons: Service, Food Portions

best prime rib of my life ... y punto!

by openville

I agree with all the reviews for The House of Prime Rib. This is THE place for prime rib. Please note, that the only choice you have in meats is what cut of prime rib you would like. That's right, no filet mignon, no bife de chorizo, or sweatbread here. The House of Prime Rib does one thing, one thing only, and one thing very well! I've had my share of prime rib, and the flavor of this beef and its sides is hands done the winner.

You should also come to the house hungry, because you will need a couple extra belt holes before you leave. I was full or sourdough bread and salad, well before the main dish made its dramatic appearance. One should note, that you can order a veggie platter, ask for steamed spinach instead of cream of ..., or have have fish of the day. But why? Why would you come here to eat fish ... really?!?!

The only con was the $20 corkage fee ... c'mon ... Other than that, we had a great meal.

p.s. - Make sure to allot a few hours for a nap after this meal.

Pros: the prime rib ... best ever!

Cons: corkage fee

Great food and great service SOMETIMES. It depends on your waiter. Some waiters are very cool, they will give you an extra piece of prime rib without you even asking for it. Other waiters will pretty much just ignore you your entire stay there. I've always been asked if I wanted an extra slice but one waiter just stood in the back and chatted it up w/ another waitress. Pretty annoying.

None the less, great food, best prime rib in town.

There is better food in San Francisco

by lyss61

If you have $35/person (without drinks) to spend, don't go here! It was an interesting experience but the food was only average. I wouldn't go back. Service was good but not genuine. Their wine list is pathetic and incredibly overpriced ($30 for a bottle you can buy at the supermarket for $12). There are much better places to eat in San Francisco. It's a lot of food for you money, but I'd rather go to Houston's for steak than House of Prime Rib.

Pros: Interesting decor (but could use an update)

Cons: average food

Mediocre knock-off to Lawry's

by racklecan

My husband and I love prime rib. We live in LA and frequent Lawry's Prime Rib in Beverly Hills. When we stayed in San Francisco, we were so eager to try House of Prime Rib especially because of the many raves we've heard. Honestly, I've never been so disappointed in my life. First of all, the carts, the spinning salad, the Yorkshire pudding all resembled what Lawry's did -- except it fell short in the area of taste. It was just missing something. There isn't the option of any other accompaniments besides creamed spinach and potato. I'll give them props for their corn bread -- at least that was original. Otherwise... it's just a bad copy-cat.

Pros: Nice corn bread

Cons: Loud, simply not as good as Lawry's

Good even on a busy night!

by cshiba

Took my girlfriend and her family there for Father's Day. Of course it was busy because where else can you go in the city for a great meal? It's best to have reservations, believe me; however, where I was thinking that the wait would be a few hours was really under 20 minutes. As always, the service, the food and the atmosphere was great for our party of 6. We were promptly attended and never felt as if we were being rushed out of there. Even on one of the busiest days to go, it was still worth it.

Best Prime Rib

by missamyq

Goodness. When I walked into this place, I knew my mouth was in for one heck of a ride. The entree comes with this deliciour salad (romaine, beets, bleu cheese...with raspberry vinagrette) freshly tossed at your table. Then they have this delicious corn bread and sourdough basket you can't resist. The plate of prime rib and creamed spinach is heavenly with an extra serving if you have that appetite. And lastly, their baked potato is icing on top of the cake loaded with sour cream, bacon, green onion..you know the works. I walked out of this restaurant with the biggest smile and slept very well that night. Very nice wine list also. :)

Cons: Parking (but hello...you are in San Francisco) WALK!
