Nothing like a good thick cut of Prime Rib. This place serves one of the best! I ordered mine medium rare.

This place is excellent. I threw in some little cream spinach and mashed potatoes with gravy on my prime rib, it was very yummy. Expensive dinner but worth it.

I have to say I love this place! It's loud, and just a happy atmosphere. No need to dress up for The House and kids are welcome. Beside the rib, the sides are not bad at all. Prices are medium to low.

Awesome Ribs. Truly spell binding, mouth watering ribs. But the service though...oy veh!
The waitress was great. It was the hour and a half wait that sucked. I even called ahead (because I've been there before) but it'd been a while. I was told by the pleasant hostess that we could make reservations but it wasn't likely we'd get a table.

After a successful handling of a recent high ticket item installation at my house, I all of a sudden had extra money to blow and I must say that I am very happy camper having eaten at this restaurant. I was looking for a special place to take my grandma and after much research, I figured this restaurant has that old school classy feel she'll be right at home at.

I read a lot of reviews on the internet, then took the plunge and made the reservation. And boy, it was well worth the money!

ATMOSPHERE: At the front door, they have valets. A good thing too since there's only very sparse street parking. When we walked in, we were pleasantly surprised with the dark wood decor. My grandma was smiling and the world is good.

FOOD: WOW, I say wow!!! Well, first we had their signature salad. Our waiter did all the pageantry that you won't find at most restaurants any longer. Had us hand-select our cold salad forks, he was spinning that salad bowl and pouring the dressing on top from 2 feet above. It was a show!

Then came the prime rib. Oh the King Henrys were several inches thick of prime meat goodness. The meat was perfectly aged, buttery, soft, simply spectacular. The very best prime rib I ever had, and my grandma totally agreed too, and she HAS eaten a lot of prime rib in her heyday, according to her :)

By the time we were done with our entree which also included: creamed spinach, 2 kinds of horseradish, Yorkshire pudding, and perfectly creamy, buttery, mashed potatoes, we had no room for dessert. A shame too since the menu sounded really good on that too.

All in all, I would definitely go again, just because of the prime rib! It was life changing experience! The rest was just a bonus.

My grandma and I have made a pact to go here at least once a year, at least until I stop renovating my house for a while, then hopefully more.

I'll say it again, IT WAS WELL WORTH IT!!!!!

Price is about $24-$27/pp but that includes the entire prime rib package, including yorkshire pudding, potatoes & gravy, bread, spinach and salad.

casual-ish atmosphere, but the food is the definite star here.

moreover, if u order the King Henry, which is the thickest slab of prime rib they've got, for that price, u have enough for next day leftovers galore. this isn't an eew idea either, the food is that good and is well worth it!

Love the House of Prime Rib. Definitely a go to place for special occasions and with out of town visitors. Had my usual - the English cut - and was not disappointed. First time I have ever made it to desert, but that was also excellent. Rather expensive, but worth it.

This place had a great prime rib but it appeared as if the staff was just a little to busy checking their cell phones to check to see if we needed any more wine. I wage much of my decision on the service being poor and not so much on quality of food.

Great San Francisco steak house. If you have visitors in town and want to treat them to something special this is your place. The wine list isn't bad either.

My family celebrates important life events in this place, so obviously I am a fan. The servings are huge, and you can always ask for seconds. My husband always takes advantage of this, and he comes out filled up and happy! I often spot quite a few 49er players here... seems like they get a good source of protein at this place!

My family and I have been going to House of Prime Rib for special occasions for years! House of Prime Rib serves some of the most delicious and tender prime rib you will find. Not only do you get a slice of prime rib, but if you are still hungry, you can get multiple slices! The price is around $30+ a head and do not go here if you are not planning on eating the prime rib because the other dishes are not quite that good. The salad is amazing and they mix it right in front of your party. The creamed spinach is also very creamy and tasty! I recommend trying the bread with a little of the table salt they provide. Parking around here is hard to find so don't expect to find one right away. Also, I would say make reservations if you can because this place is always busy.

The beef is tender, juicy, and flavorful. I wouldn't suggest coming here if you don't want steak.

I enjoy their food here. Lots of mouth watering flavor and I like the super fast way they get the food out to you, without feeling hurried. More accurately, I think I should say that the food comes out in successions, at the perfect timing.

I have been coming here for special occasions since I was a child. Recently took friends from out of town here for dinner and I was absolutely thrilled that HOPR was exactly as it has always been......warm, great service, excellent food and cocktails and satisfying portions. They will even serve you seconds. Their signature salad and dressing are not to be missed. The dressing is available for sale so if you want the salad experience you can have it at home too. The best beef on the planet, real mashed potatoes, creamed spinach and yorkshire pudding. Don't hesitate to come here. ONE WARNING......plan ahead. Reservations are a must especially on weekends.

WE WERE IN S.F. FOR OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY. WE HAD THE CONCIERGE AT OUR HOTEL BOOK A RESERVATION AT THE HOUSE OF PRIME RIB. THE ONLY TIME SLOT AVAILABLE WAS 6:00PM. WE SHOWED UP AT 5:45 AND THEY CAN'T FIND OUR RESERVATION. I EXPLAINED THAT THE HOTEL HAD CONFIRMED. THEY WENT TO RE-CHECK CAME BACK AND SAID THEY STILL CAN'T FIND IT. I ASKED WHAT COULD BE DONE AND WAS TOLD VERY RUDELY TOLD "NOTHING, YOU DON'T HAVE A RESERVATION". AFTER 40 YEARS OF PATRONIZING THIS JOINT---NEVER AGAIN. RUDE, NASTY MANAGEMENT. "BRUNO THE BOUNCER" MADE SURE WE LEFT THE JOINT AND THEN THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME $8.00 FOR VALET PARKING---HA!!!! MY ONLY REGRET IS THAT MANAGEMENT AND/OR OWNERSHIP WILL NEVER SEE THIS REVIEW---OR IF THEY DO THEY WON'T CARE!!!!

We go here about four times per year; it is my kid's favorite. Last night was our first disappointing visit. We had a nice visit at the bar with Peter the bartender who is thoroughly pleasant and remembers how to make a cocktail. We had a reservation and were seated in a reasonable amount of time. Things went downhill from there. The service was perfunctory at best, our server, Lacey, was phoning it in. Both our cuts were not up to snuff and not the portion size we are used to here. We thought of sending them back but decided not to (my son wanted to eat). They used to give you a small second helping but I guess they don't do that anymore. So, we'll definitely go back but we hope this is not a sign that things here are not what they used to be.

Walked-in told no problem, will have you seated with-in hour, please wait at the bar. If you ordered alcohol beverage (as my husband did) they will keep you at bar forevever (3hrs) still not seated I went to bathroom multiple times, walked around, "empty tables", asked several times, told you are next, asked to speak to manager, told tables are for reservations, will seat you soon, not a caring person at all. 2 men at bar when we got there from out of town, had waited 3 hrs before seated, drinking alcohol, were seated just before we asked to talk to manager. Who cruised around the area multiple times. Pulled bar keeper aside (probably to tell him to keep pushing the alcohol)
If you drink only water at the bar you have a quicker chance of being seated.we left and went to Harri's just 1 or 2 blocks away seated propmtly, served professionally. Piano music, clean restrooms.

Pros: NONE/ Would not recommend at all/Loud/rude manager

Cons: If you are not a local & have a reservation, YOOL

House of Prime Rib is hands down my favorite restaurant in the city. I'm not saying that it serves the best food that San Francisco has to offer, but rather a dining experience I enjoy above all else. First things first, do not eat here unless you love Prime Rib. Simple as that. Some people complain that the menu is limited (you simply choose your cut of meat and not much else) but if you can't tell from the name what their specialty is than the simple menu isn't where your problems start or end.. You meal starts with a salad that even the most hard core carnivores will enjoy. Once the cart of prime rib is brought over and carved at your table, you enjoy your meat with creamed spinach, yorkshire pudding and your choice of potatoes. Bring your appetite because if you finish your cut of meat you get another one for free! i've endured many a food comma from the House of Prime Rib and each time it is completely worth it!

Pros: Prime rib!!

Cons: For meat lovers only

I am from Texas and I can tell you that I know my beef. The House of Prime Rib serves the most tender and succulent prime rib that I have ever tasted! There are some restaurants that give you a small serving and charge you a fortune, but .the cost of the meal is reasonable in comarison to the large portions of meat and side dishes that you are served. The service is extremely friendly and efficient. Too bad that this is the only one in existence. Would love to have one in Texas. I heartily recommend this restaurant to everyone!

Pros: Best Prime Rib and excellent service

October 20, 2009

The Prim rib melted in my mouth. I heard about house of Prim rib from a friend so I decided to go with my family from out of town for a change. They had the best service and the food was mouth watering. My family said that they have never tasted prim rib like they did at the House Of Prim Rib... They told me every time they come back to see me they want to go to the HOUSE OF PRIM RIB....

If you would like an evening of screaming across your table to your dining companions, surrounded by LOTS OF loud single man: well this is your place!
To make the dining experience even better : you can count on barmaid Jennifer (her personality is sort of a 19th Century Schoolmistress at a Catholic Nun's school)
Plus you have the patronizing austrian manager,to help you.

Pros: Beef cuts are OK...not great

Cons: Noisy, crowded, rude employers

I have been hearing about this restaurant ever since I moved to Sf a few years ago, and I finally just went for dinner. The Prime Rib is delicious and you get a number of sides with your meal that are just as good. Go hungry!

Pros: Great sides

Cons: Too much food

This is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. Old-school charm, lush red leather banquettes, professional well-dressed waiters, a sweetheart of a maitre'd, and a great bar. The prime rib is succulent and done to a turn, just how you like it (they even offer yorkshire pudding, something you just can't find anymore)! Portions are large and the service is impeccable. We have our holiday dinner here with friends every year, and invariably everyone loves this place. It's expensive, but for special occasions you can't beat it.
Highly recommended.

Pros: Delicious food; sumptuous atmosphere

Cons: None--really

This place hasn't changed since 1949. Dark style steak house like mood. Old red seats, fix ens that make you say, I remember eating that when I was a steak houses 20 years ago. The creamed spinach, yum. Lots of bacon flavor, the mash with the extras yum, wine selection is reasonable with the more expensive topping off around $110. The star of the show is the prime rib. Melt in your mouth goodness. Dinner for 4 was a bit over $300. A bit expensive but I guess for SFO not too bad. I'm impressed they don't serve french frys, even for kids.

Enjoy!

Pros: Prime Rib in a classic environment

Cons: Do the valet. Shady part of town at night.

January 26, 2009

any true prime rib lover should get here asap

the herbs on the crust were good enough to eat alone

very fine wine selection as well

Pros: nice price too

Cons: service a bit slow

Cons: None

prime rib! why do i have to write 100 characters? prime rib! why do i have to write 100 characters? prime rib! why do i have to write 100 characters?

Pros: prime rib

October 17, 2008

I've been here countless times and I absolutely love it. If you like prime rib, you've come to the right place! The portions are big, the meat is juicy and delicious, the salad is good (and I don't normally like salad), the creamed spinach is SO good!
BUT you must be patient with this place. It is very crowded, especially on Fridays and weekends. Get a reservation if you have more than two people in your party, otherwise you can just walk in. I've gotten reservations a few times and I noticed that you end up waiting anyway, so you might as well walk in, put your name down, and have some drinks at the bar. Shaken drinks are especially good because they give you the shaker with practically another drink's worth in it.

Here are some warnings for people without common sense (everyone who gives this place a rating of 3 stars or less) as well as a few overall comments:
1) This is the House of PRIME RIB. If you intend to order fish or chicken, DON'T come here.
2) The meals are at least $35 a person (definitely worth it to me), not including drinks (which are pricey as well) so cheapskates should steer clear.
3) The portions are quite large, yet if you finish your meat (and I always do) you get a extra thin slice for free. (The people who said the portions are small are pigs because I am always stuffed walking out of this place. And I'm not a skinny person!)
4) This place is crowded and obviously for a reason, so use your best judgment. The waitstaff is incredibly friendly every time I go, however I can imagine it's quite easy to get irritated in such a busy environment. I know that waiters and waitresses are there to serve you, but that doesn't give you the right to treat them badly. Be kind and courteous and you shall receive the same treatment.
5) This place is loud, so if you're looking for a quiet dinner, go somewhere else.

ENJOY! :)

Pros: prime rib, drinks, service

Cons: be prepared to wait regardless of reservation

September 08, 2008

This is the best prime rib I've ever had, but I love the sides even more! I've gone too many times to be wowed by the ritual, but the salad is the greatest. I vow not to eat too much bread, but the steaming sourdough is so good. And the creamed spinach is wonderful. Skip the mild and "sharp" creamy dressings offered- there are three more if you ask- hot straight, raw grated (which is sweet) and red grated pickled. Spear a piece of meat covered with the grated, spear a piece of Yorkshire pudding, dip in the au jus mixed with hot horseradish swallow and finish with a gulp of Sinskey pinot noir and you have the finest taste experience of a lifetime.

Some like tasting menus with every dish 2 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall, where you can't remember what you ate ten minutes later. I prefer repetition, with each bite reinforcing the memory of the last, making House of Prime Rib my favorite restaurant of all.

So if you want the best food in a restaurant that makes you feel special, you have found the place.

Pros: Great prime rib and sides, ambience

Cons: Wait even with a reservation

July 15, 2008

The prime rib is the best in the city and the service was fantastic. Highly recommend this place for their ribs and steak. Keep up the good work guys!

Pros: great steak and ribs, good service

July 13, 2008

Went to SF for the weekend and tried House of Prime Rib based on all the good reviews.... SCORE!!! The prime rib at this place left me and my wife determined to find a comparable prime rib joint in our home town (San Diego). Prime Rib was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I'm a horse-raddish fan and they had 3 and I had each one (mild, medium, and hot)... beware, the hot one is no joke... my sinuses almost exploded. The meal comes with sourdough bread and a salad with house dressing that was tasty. HERE'S THE KICKER... if you are NOT full after your prime rib, they will serve you another cut (WHAT?!...perfect gimic since the average eater will get SUPER full beforehand).

In addition, the service was great - friendly and warm. The atmosphere was relaxing and welcoming. House of Prime Rib is a guaranteed fulfilling dining experience. Enjoy.

Pros: Very good prime rib, lots of food, if your not full...get another slice on the house!

Cons: Reservations fill up early... call in way in advanced.

June 26, 2008

I spent a week in SF Visiting a buddy of mine, and this was the last meal I had before leaving. Everything was amazing. The service, the food, the incredible wine list. I couldn't have asked for anything more in my visit.

Pros: everything

Cons: nothing

June 11, 2008

i went here for the 1st time on my 21st birthday last year with a few friends, and oh boy! the food we ordered was soooo good. from the second we walked in the door, we were all drooling, the smell was to die for. when the food arrived were were all pleased to see the portions were big! mmm mmm. this place is great.

May 20, 2008

GREAT Prime Rib and salad!! A real part of San Francisco. People who don't like it either don't know great prime rib or are NOT SF Natives... It has been a tradition in our family for 30 years.

Pros: The prime rib

Cons: the wait

May 15, 2008

This place was okay, but the salad ritual was hilarious! Spinning around a bowl of iceberg lettuce and tinned beets on ice cubes while sprinkling it with bottled garlic salt...and the results looked like they were being eaten for the second time! The waiter really seemed to enjoy it, although questions posed in the middle of his patter and choreography really seemed to throw him off track. The food was, again, okay. Much better to be had at half the price elsewhere, though. Still, the salad dance was worth the cost of admission. Take a camera, it's priceless! I still laugh my head off thinking about it!

Pros: Somewhat festive.

Cons: Could use a few velvet paintings.

April 20, 2008

My friend told me that they remodeled and have a new wine room and new bathrooms. So I went with a group of 6 and wow were we impressed! The wine room is the most beautiful thing in the city. Right in the center of the restaurant with glass walls, so you can see all their great wines they have there. The new bathrooms are great too, much more spacious and clean! The Prime Rib is awsome as always and the salad is getting better every time we go. Their dressing is the best! I always get two bottles to take home since they won't tell me the recipe. Friendly staff too! Can't wait to go back!!!

April 20, 2008

Went there on a weekday and the place was packed. WOW! Went with my girl for her birthday and they brought out a scoop of ice cream with a candle, sang, and took a picture of us. How sweet! Memories forever. Oh, by the way, the food and service was amazing, love the mashers.

April 20, 2008

What can I say? If you want the best Prime Rib ever, go to this place. Very friendly staff and great food. Too bad they book up so fast, but if you remember to make a reservation in advance, it is the best. A lot of excellent food for a good price. 8 Dollar Valet is also the cheapest in town. Can't wait to go back!

Pros: Food, staff, and valet

Cons: loud

April 18, 2008

Very tasty. You get what you pay for. Price is worth the portion and taste. Service was at par. When In San Francisco, I like to make time for this place.

Pros: Prime Rib, yorkshire pudding

Cons: Parking, take the cable car.
