House of Prime Rib sprawls over five rooms with comfy banquets, spacious tables, and fireplaces. There are two fresh fish dishes on the menu but we have been known for fine prime rib since 1949. We serve only the best beef available, the top two percent of all beef marketed. Although this incurs additional expense, our USDA Eastern corn-fed beef, aged for 21 days, is the most tender, juicy and flavorful beef available. The House of Prime Rib has been many times imitated but never duplicated.

The Scene
With its wingback chairs, thick carpets, brass-studded leather banquettes, wood paneling and fireplaces, the House of Prime Rib looks like a British country manor. Especially popular for special occasions, the restaurant has multiple dining rooms that are almost always crowded, usually with a family-oriented clientele that makes the trek from all over the city and greater Bay Area.

The Food
The name says it all. Although the menu offers a variety of traditional meat-and-potatoes dishes, the real focus is prime rib. The warm, juicy roasts are served tableside--showmanship is big here--from large aluminum carts that are wheeled continuously through the dining room. Entrees come with mashed or baked potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, horseradish and salad. Like the meat, salads are served tableside, with the greens and dressing tossed together in a spinning chilled bowl. A seafood entree is also available, varying each night according to season.

Key Points

  • Bar & cocktail lounge
  • Ribs & salad
  • Private dining

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - If you order either the House, English or King Henry VIII Cuts, you can get slightly slimmer seconds for free.

Ratings_icons Prime Review for the "HOUSE"

bob_curlee

As a former Steak and Ale kitchen manager, I have high expectations for Prime Rib and can be a tough critic! What could they improve on...NOTHING!!! The service is top notch and professional, the atmosphere warm and cozy, and the beef succulent and tender! If you are a beef lover, this wonderful establishment is a must! There is not a place in Texas that has been able to touch it yet! I do recommend reservations. Get yourself on by, and enjoy one of the best meals to be had in the Bay Area!

Pros: Best Prime Rib, Great Salad Dressing, Attentive Service

Cons: Very Busy->RSVP, Small Waiting Area

They come around and cut the prime rib in front of you. Their salad is very unique and tasty. Great bread/butter too! I love their creamed spinach and mashed potatoes...

the best part...it's all you can eat!!!

Pros: best

Cons: parking, crowded

If you're looking for great Prime Rib, this is the place to go. I wouldn't recommend eating anything else but the prime rib because it's their specialty. This is a San Francisco classic and feels a bit like a trip back in time.

remember to ask for seconds if, surprisingly, you didn't have enough in round 1. english cut, city cut, house cut & king henry VIII cut for the serious beef eater...name your prime rib and HOPR delivers, along w/ a mouth watering salad w/ their secret dressing tossed tableside. granted, ridiculous waits (even w/ res. at times) BUT you eat almost immediately after ordering and it's well worth it.

Pros: great prime rib, comfortable dining rm, great value

Cons: long wait

Pardon the Frank Zappa reference, but this restaurant almost feels like family - some great and occasionally not-so-great things about it. This most recent visit was vintage; outstanding, tender prime rib cooked and seasoned perfectly. Creamed spinach very tasty but don't fool yourself into thinking it's good for you. Great martinis too! After dining there 17 years, you're bound to hit a weak night, so if you're disappointed don't be afraid to tell your waiter or better yet, Gus the maitre-d.

Pros: great food, comfortable lounge, personable staff

Cons: sometimes long wait, not for vegetarians, $15 corkage fee

...you can thank me later. Not only is the PR at HPR outstanding, but the sides and the amazing salad and dressing just make it that much better. Great to go with a group. Good, friendly service. One of the more enjoyable dining experiences I've had in SF...

Ratings_icons Prime time at Prime Rib!

liltummy_bigeater

What can I say?? I have been to House of Prime Rib with my boyfriend more times than I can count! Well-worth the money for the tender, juicy, and flavorful medium-rare prime rib!! Pre-dinner cocktails are always perfect, desserts like the Tiramisu warmed and melted in our mouths. Have always left feeling jusssssst right! Waiters/waitresses are laid back and very friendly, not so sure about the hostesses though. But hey, you're just coming for the food, right?

Ratings_icons THE place for meat-eaters

crimsonka

Vegitarians beware: this is a place for meat lover. Choose the cut and portions you want for prime rib that melts in your mouth. All the additional courses are superb, crisp salad with the secret spices, baked or mashed potatoes with all the fixings, yorkshire pudding to soak up the juices, and great desserts. For those who like spicey, get the horseradish from the kitchen to flare up those nostrels. Nice wine selection as well. Go early to sip on great cocktails. Nothing fancy here, just old school charm that worked 50 years ago, and works still today.

Pros: Valet parking

Cons: can get noisy

Ratings_icons Prime Rib or Prime Rib?

scroddum

Every time it's the same. Bread, salad, prime rib, potato, creamed spinach, yorkshire pudding. 50-some years of perfecting makes for great food and service. Old school? Yes. Great food? Heck yes. And reasonably priced!

Pros: food

Cons: need advanced ressies

Ratings_icons Don't eat anything before going there

tonylee42

Prepare your stomach for lots and lots of food. Only problem is that not all of it is that great. I liked the prime rib, but the salad drowns in the huge bath of dressing and the spinach and mashed potatoes are pretty bland, yet very salty.

Service was excellent. Baked potato was very good, and the spicy horseradish will keep your sinuses clear for the rest of the night.

I suggest getting the a la carte order of prime rib, which includes everything in the House Cut except the salad. Second helpings are free so take advantage of it.

Pros: excellent service, tender prime rib, lots of food

Cons: salad over dressed
