Really good food and always good service. Can be a bit busy specially on game days, but I personally never a bad experience here.

Try their memphis pork, or the combination plate of a little bit of everything, a game on the tube, and you have a match made in heaven. That's what Sundays are all about!

Food is always very good at Big Nate's. This is why I keep coming back through the years. Last time I visited, the man behind the counter threw in a couple of short ends, after I begged for some. I'm a regular, by the way, so please do not ask for the same thing. I wouldn't want Big Nate's to go out of business. This was a one time thing, and the man was really sweet for doing it. Thanks.

Big Nate's BBQ has been around forever. I love the ribs (with no sauce) and all the extras. When I lived in the city - I would make a special trip to Nate's for ribs. Thinking about it - I think I am going to make a special trip this week! And yes - Big Nate was there many times when I went in. He also has many pictures up in the restaurant.

My boyfriend and I decided to try out Big Nate's BBQ as he was craving meat. We stopped by Big Nate's and also ran into Nate Thurmond himself. He was friendly and welcoming. It is a small little restaurant, little expensive, but good food. The location is downtown and there is a little parking lot right next door. We did take-out but they also have a place for sit down and they deliver.

Being from eastern NC, I'm very picky when it comes to my bbq. While Nate's doesn't have that great pulled pork with a spicy vinegar sauce, it does have a great smokey sauce that really is delicious. Definitely go for the brisket and not the ribs. They really are too tough be be considered.

Big Nate's is all about the potential to see Nate himself and the BBQ sauce. Nate's sauce is pretty great but doesn't always cover the fact that the meat can be a bit tough. I'm partial to ribs that slide off the bone - that's not the case here- but still good for a bbq fix at lunch occassionally. 1/2 size is good for lunch - beef brisket is a better bet than the pork ribs.

About 5 tables, no ambiance - it's all about the ribs.

Excellent for lunch with their $8.75 memphis pork sandwich!

I've been eating here close to 15 years. It's a good value, the cole slaw is good, so go for that, not the potato sald. Never got sick from this place either so that's a plus.

I wouldn't recommend it if you are going here thinking this are the best ribs in San Francisco. The meat from the pork ribs was hard and the hot sauce not that good. The side items I have to say were good compared to the ribs. If you want good ribs don't go there, unless you want to find out for yourself.

It was Labor Day and the family decided to get barbeque from 'Big Nate's" barbeque joint. For $15.00 you'd think we'd have a mess of barbeque to chomp on. Not the case here, there was only enough for two people. We were also disappointed to have to eat ribs that were tough and fatty, and links that tasted like sawdust (cooked too done). So in essence the ribs weren't cooked enough and the linnks were cooked too much! This was the worst Labor Day feast I've ever had. I don't think we'll be frequenting 'Big Nate's' any time in the near future.

I make a point of getting over to Big Nate's every time I visit the area. If you are going at lunch time, are hungry and tempted to go with the lunch portion, do yourself a favor and step up to the dinner. While the lunch menu will soothe your urge for bbq, it will probably leave you unfulfilled and wanting more. The seating is limited so I try to go 30 minutes before or after the general lunch crowd. Big Nate's is closer to great Texas bbq than anything else that I have found in the city.

The food is great. Not phenomonally great but damn good. Plus, it's the only BBQ I'll get delivered. You know why? The delivery boys are always hot (make sure you look good when you answer the door). I always get the chicken extra spicy. That's the best way to eat it from Nate's. The delivery service is backed up on weekends and fridays but it's worth the wait. Very filling and satisfying food. And keep those boys coming! Where do they get these fine imports?

I had high hopes for this place. I was in the mood for some pork ribs, being from the south, as is my significant other. The food was the most forgettable barbecue I've ever experienced. Hey, I realize I'm not in the South, but I expected something better than this. I paid $35 for a lunch for two, and it was just terrible. The service was fine, and the help friendly. Too bad the food was so bad. You would do much better at a Safeway Deli or MacDonald's, and those are two of my least favorite food emporiums. The corn muffins were a cruel joke, the potato salad unforgettable, the ribs tough, the beef brisket laughable cubes swimming in a barbecue soup. Someone here just doesn't "get" it. Should have gone out of business years ago.

BBQ was really good in my opinion. Its hard to find this type of BBQ food in the city and they didn't disappoint. The other sides were just OK, but hey, its a BBQ place not a sides place. Prices are a little more than what you want to spend for a lunch, but its ok to splurge once in a while!

I wanted to like this place since it's close, delivers and it's BBQ. Had the 3 point combo delivered. The delivery service was fine, quick and food was still very hot. The pork ribs were good, soft enough but not quite falling off the bone. Also got the brisket and memphis pork. The 3 items were packed in the same container, and I just couldn't tell which was brisket and which was pork until biting into it. The sides were average, but I'm more into the Q anyway. I'll try it again to see if the chicken or links are better, but just wasn't sold on the other items.

You can't go wrong with this fun little BBQ joint. First of all, you can smell this place from like 2 blocks away. There's nothing like walking into this place and seeing all the pictures of the famous people who are pictured with Big Nate. The food is so good and the sauce on the food is tangy and spicy. The corn bread is fairly good too. This is a special place with great food and great service. Check out all the pictures if you can and don't forget to grab tons of napkins!
FYI, everytime I've gone I've run into BIG NATE himself.

Burnt chicken, it did fall off the bones but was dry and sauce lacked flavour. Brisket was chewey as hell, overcooked. I didn't go near the ribs. Sides sucked. Nasty Nate's. I wish Brother in Laws was open more consistentley.

I feel bad writing this, because I'm a huge Warriors fan...GO Warriors! However, the BBQ at Nates is very BAD! It's sad because it has the potential to be legendary. People who don't know what good BBQ is, think this is what BBQ should taste like. And what does Nate's taste like? Severely undercooked and rubbery to start. They slather everything in way too much sauce, to make up for the chewy texture of the meat. It's almost like they rush the delicate, low and slow process of making melt in your mouth BBQ, in order to turn a quick buck. The menu is way overpriced by the way. Pass on Nates and head to either Memphis Minnies or Ma Pinkies in San Mateo for a much more authentic BBQ experience.

Pros: Nate Working The Cash Register.

Cons: Chewy "Dog Meat" BBQ, Everything Is Drowned In Sauce, Over-Priced!

While their bar-b-q is very good, it's not the best. It's decent for SF. I agree w/ sbgirl, some of the best bar-b-q can be found in the south! But Big Nate's has a great smoky taste. I only wish they would improve on thier side dishes. The potatoe salad could use some work (little mustard, relish, boiled eggs). The beans, when I had them, were a bit too wartery and under seasoned, So was the greens. Where was the ham hocks? Still, if you're craving bar-b-q I'd recommend this place. The brisket is juicy and flavorful. Get your sides else where!

Not only is Big Nate one of the greatest defensive basketball players ever, and a really nice guy to boot if you are lucky enough to run into him at the restaurant, but with delivery you are able to get good bbq at your house an hour after you order. Great for when you are feeling lazy and what bbq at home by only picking up the phone and answering the door.

Best BBQ without leaving the comfort of my home! Big Nate has a website that you can order from. Great smoky barbeque, but the sides dishes are soso. But the people there are nice and friendly (even over the phone!) and we will definitely order again!!!

I was born & raised in the southern states - so it's fair to say I've had some good BBQ over the years. BBQ & Cajun/Creole restaurants is something you just don't find in SF in either quantity or quality. I've lived here for 7 years and never tried any of the BBQ joints as I feared they'd never live up to my expectations of truly good BBQ. Big Nates is fairly good for a BBQ joint in the city - solid but not the best I've ever had. Agree with other reviews the side dishes are lacking in taste which is a shame. The BBQ will hit the spot if you have a craving but nothing will match the good joints in the south. Disappointed the ribs didn't quite fall off the bone, but nice smoky taste.

I have tried a number of places around the San Francisco and I find it really hard to find a good bareque place. Big Nates is by far the best I have had. The meats were great, the sauce was finger licking good, and the free home delivery on the weekends. Whats not to like????????? May I make a suggestion get the three meats team meal combo it is a great dinner for two!!!

I recommended for my company today and was a bit worried when I saw all the reviews. It's been a few years since I had big nates and I thought maybe something happened. I need not have been worried, by brisket was absolutely excellent, the hot sauce could be hotter but I'm a bit over the top on the spices. The meat was an excellent cut and melted in my mouth. Delivery time was about 30 minutes which was right on the nose. Ignore the negative reviews these must be from other bbq joints jealous of big nate's excellent fare.

Nate's is my spot in the city for bbq. I recommend the 1/2 order of beef brisket (medium) with cole slaw. Tastes great and the perfect meal when I'm hungry. Simple establishment that is filled with great photos of Nate with Muhamad Ali, Joe Montana, Magic etc. Also, the aroma from all the cooking meats is great!

Let's start with the worst ribs I've ever had!!! They were dry, tough & fatty - HELLO, not exactly what bb-q should be & I challenge anyone to try to get the corn muffin out of the paper in one piece - it will only crumble and fall to the floor. I vow to never have BB-Q anywhere other than MEMPHIS MINNIE'S - i must have been out of my mind to try another. Trust me when I tell you that I know what true BB-Q should be, living in the South has it's advantages & eating good BB-Q has spoiled me. Thank heavens for MEMPHIS MINNIE'S.
Oh, and I ended up making a PB&J for dinner the night I ate at Big Fake's BB-Q

2nd visit update: ribs & brisket were somewhat moist, still not smokey. ribs likely parboiled - yech! Meat was cold, while sauce on side was warm. Will not return again. 1st visit: maybe I shouldn't have gone near closing time. No ribs available. The combo of brisket and Memphis pork was served dry and chewy. The sauce, which I asked for on the side, was tasty and zesty and helped me eat up the dry meat. Coleslaw with raisins and potato salad were both good side. Overall - doesn't even compare with Memphis Minnie's food.

I liked this place. No fuss, just good bbq. I especially like the baked beans- not too sweet and nothing unusual floating around in it. The location was easy to find if you know what you're looking for. Lot's of food comes on the 2-combo! Couldn't even eat it all. So I recommend getting your order to go, so you can save some for later. It's also open on Mondays, when some of the other bbq joints are closed.

Must say, Big nates IS the best I've had! Get the standard pork rib dinner with med or hot sauce and you'll remember it. I moved from SF to Chicago 4 years ago, and thought in a city like chicago I'd find great bbq. Thought wrong. I still go by big nates almost every time I'm back home in SF. Horrible BBQ. Small portions, overpriced. Stringy meats. Tasteless sauce. Not to mention the one time I went in there, Nate was there without so much as a Hello and thanks for coming to my place.
DO NOT GO THERE.

OH MY GOD! Do they smoke the ribs over burning tires? It tasted like it. The potato salad was bland, the cole slaw tasteless. Try adding some seasoning guys. I can't imagine anyone liking this crap. I've had shoes that tasted better. My company bought a whole mess of this CRAP, and everyone wanted to know where it came from so they wouldn't ever make the mistake of going there. That was the opinion of 30 people. Big Nates ought to be called CLOSED. did I mention the uncooked out of the can beans?

Pros: not one, nothing, nada

Cons: taste like burnt tire, crappy neighborhood, overpriced

It may not be the best BBQ in the Bay Area, but it's pretty damn good. Nice tasty sauce, good quality cuts of meat. Pork ribs are a bit fatty (what ribs aren't), but taste great, chicken and brisket are both very good. Plus, they deliver on weekends for ballgames, etc. Sides are weak, yeah, but that leaves more room for good BBQ! Relatively affordable as well.

Read the other reviews and thought we would give it a try. Yuk. I lived in Texas and know BAR-B-Q (I am not FROM Texas, only lived there...so I am not one of "those" people). Everything is premade 100% so it is dry/gross. The only redeeming quality is the sauce...sorta. The sides are pretty lame and they give you (I dont know why) plain wheat bread with your order. Yuk. Throw in the corn bread for crying out loud. Then the service staff looks at you when you walk in like you are their first customer and nervous. (although if I worked in THAT neighborhood, I could be nervous too). Dont waste your time like we did...or if you try it, you will be like us and know not to go back. Yuk. Take it from someone who KNOWS good barbeque...it's bad, dry, and lame.

Pros: sauce is ok

Cons: dry precooked meat, bad taste, poor service

Found the food to be below average and the sauce too peppery. Sides were nothing special and service was OK.

Inexpensive and filling, but not really what I consider a culinary experience. I'd rather have grilled meats, than layered-on sweet sauce. But then again, eveyone has a different opinion of what barbeque should be.

What's more personal than barbecue? So, if someone says they love Nate's, that's fine with me. Live and let live. But, FOR ME, Nate's is quite weak. For ribs, I'd say Brothers-in-Law is better. For brisket or pork, Memphis Minnie's is much better. Can't speak to chicken or links.

For this restaurant to even use the term "barbecue" should be a crime. The food is dried out and tasteless and real barbecue is moist and flavorful. This place seems to think that slopping some tomato-based sauce on baked ribs makes them "barbecued." Nothing could be further from the truth. The food served here is NOT real barbecue.

Nate's has the best ribs in SF, but on a recent visit, I ordered the brisket of beef. Ouch. I expected something I could sink my teeth into, what I got was little pieces of chopped up beef, they were more well done than I like my meat, I asked for the mildest sauce they had and it was more spicy than what I really like (I like it mild, and it wasn't that mild.) And their salads, coleslaw and potato salad, leave a lot of room for improvement, however, because of the high quality of the ribs, still some of the best I've ever had, I have to give Nate's a thumb's up.

I am a fan. Big Nate is probably used to having fans chase after him since his days in the NBA. Now I chase after SF Muni to get down to Folsom Street for the BEST BBQ Ever! I appreciate those little holes in the wall which concentrate on doing one thing well. It pays off at Big Nates. I love to walk by and smell the BBQ pits, I love the Brisket and coleslaw. Get some for yourself and see. Did I mention they deliver?!

It might be easy to drive right past this place, despite the big, bold lettering spelling out Big Nate's on the side of the building, but we wouldn't recommend it. In a town with too few barbecue joints, Big Nate's is one of the best.…
