They are not the cheapest around but they are reliable. I've ordered flowers from them a few times and have never set foot in their store. I've done everything via phone and my orders were always done same day with no complaint.

I received a colorful bouquet of flowers from my children on Saturday, arranged in a small cube vase. This was a Mother's Day present, and apparently their request to have this gift delivered on Mother's Day could not be honored. The bouquet came without directions regarding how to best preserve it for as long as possible, and I was surprised by that. I was also taken aback by the money they must have spent on it (a beautiful brochure from Teleflora was included, which was more information than I wanted at the time!) as well as the fact that a few flowers were already starting to come out of the arrangement. I reasoned that the store must have been busy for Mother's Day deliveries and l proceeded to look for the perfect place for my flower arrangement...

By Sunday, the three huge and beautiful roses were in total bloom and some of the other flowers were starting to droop. By Monday, most of the flowers looked wilted and the roses were starting to fade. I called the store and spoke to a young woman who suggested that I cut the stems back. I explained to her that the stems were already so short, because of the short size of the vase, that I was worried that the arrangement would totally fall apart. She suggested bringing the flowers in for replacement.

It is Tuesday, and I have just returned from the store, where I was greeted by a man who seems in charge (the owner or manager). I brought the flower arrangement with me so he could actually see the state my poor bouquet was in. I told him that it looked quite sad for flowers that had been ordered for Sunday and that I wanted the chance to enjoy this gift for longer, as I am sure it was intended. He told me that it has been extremely hot in the last few days. I explained to him that I have fresh flowers at home all the time and succeed in keeping them looking fresh for at least a week and often more, regardless of the temperature. He became defensive, reiterated that it had been warmer than usual and added that because of the high volume for Mother's Day the flowers are cut earlier. While this may well be the case, I don't think that the high volume of sales that florists achieve on Mother's Day should influence the quality of the flowers they deliver.

After some back and forth, the man proposed several resolutions: he could freshen up the bouquet, give me some coupons for future purchases or find another bouquet to replace it with. I only wanted the same kind of bouquet, if he could replace it with new flowers and assure me that the problem was not due to the short stems that are particular to this arrangement. I certainly did not want to take back my wilted flower cube in order to come back later and get a discount on other merchandise of unknown quality. My choice would have been a replacement bouquet with new flowers. Unfortunately, this was never offered to me as an alternative and I was so taken aback by the man's attitude, that I did not press for it.

I ended up choosing to take home another bouquet, since I did not trust that freshening up my wilted one would result in the flowers staying fresh for any length of time. I was not given a choice of several bouquets, but offered one - which had already been assembled. The man offered to augment it with some more flowers, which looked like a good idea. Several minutes later, he offered me this bouquet with two roses and some greens added in. This bouquet looks very much like one I would pick up at Safeway or Trader Joe's for a fraction of a cost. I will enjoy it because it was a gift from my children, but would never choose to pay its cost myself.

I have had a lot of experience purchasing flowers from florists, both for myself and as gifts. I understand that part of what you pay for is the service and the delivery. But I also believe that you pay for the artistry of the florist who is putting together the flower arrangement as well as the customer service.

I was incredibly disappointed by the reticence shown to me. In these days and times, in particular, one would imagine that having a satisfied customer is a priority. Given that there are so many wonderful florists in the area, who put a very unique stamp on their flower arrangements, and who are eager for me to be a satisfied customer, I cannot imagine ever shopping at San Mateo Florists, or recommending the store to anyone I know.

From El Camino I never thought that the store was so beautiful and so much to offer with pleasant, smiling, helpful staff. A large selections of VERY fresh flowers and plant and unique gift items. After speaking with the staff I was shocked to learn that they have been in business for over 25+years. I highly recommend the store because of their excellent service, lovely showroom and fresh products. Check them out.
