In addition to nightly dinners, Bix is also open for Lunch on Fridays. The lively bar offers a diverse wine list and cocktail menu that earned Bix the "Best in the City" by readers of the San Francisco Chronicle. Barmen mix myriad libations with classic cocktails such as Martinis and Sidecars. Bix's wine list offers everything from premium Cabernets and Champagnes to vintage by the glass values. After dinner, patrons savor an aged Eau de Vie, a rare Cognac or a snifter of Mendocino brandy blended by Biederbeck himself.

Editorial by

The Scene
A high-ceilinged, two-story dining room rich with details draws business lunchers, but the joint is better cast as a leisurely pit stop for a Rat Packer and his dolled-up date. The long mahogany bar is impossible to ignore, and cocktails both classic and inventive are a strong suit. The '30s supper-club theme extends to the service, which is knowledgeable and precise; it's a joy to watch the waiter compose a steak tartare or bananas Foster tableside.

The Food
Updated renditions of American supper-club fare reign here, with a few twists and the occasional dip into regional cuisine; the results are usually satisfying, if not quite transcendent. Roast quail with potato-and-olive ravioli is succulent and creative. Try the inch-thick potato pancake, delightfully crispy, with smoked salmon and creme fraiche, or the juicy and iconic club burger, draped with bacon.

Key Points

  • Reserve your table on-line
  • Perfect for celebrations
  • Large wine list

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - Nightly jazz enhances the '30s-style atmosphere.
  2. What to Drink - Bix is known for its classic martinis.

Ratings_icons Total Waste

I took my wife here a week ago in search of a romantic evening. Instead we found a noisy frat crowd grown old. A wasted dining experience.

Cons: Noisy, cramped

I had made reservations 2 days before. Still, we had to wait almost an hour to get seated. Messed up on our order. All they had to say was "sorry, we're busy tonight".

Cons: Rude management, Useless reservations

The atmosphere, food, and waitstaff all added up for a wonderful dining experience. I would highly recommend this to someone looking for a place to celebrate a special occassion.

Recently we went to Bix for the first time, it was louder than I had expected and therefore not as romantic as one is lead to beleive. The service was excellent. The first course was excellent, but the main course a little dissappointing, the quality of the meat wasn't top notch. The portions are not small as people have said, if anyone has dined in a standard European restaurant, they will know what to expect, unlike the obese Americans who eat 6000 calories a day and expect a plate full of dead cow everytime they have a steak. A full meal for two did cost in the region of $250.

Pros: Service, distinct atmosphere, food

Cons: Too noisy, crowded bar, expensive

Ratings_icons Better as takeout

Called WELL in advance rsvp for an early 6PM celebration of wife's birthday. Not one mention or indication of the special occasion. Instead of a romantic evening upstairs we sat in the midst of a loud bar crowd with a business deal on one side and a bridal shower on the other. Food was attractively prepared and very tasty, however the experience would have been better if we ordered to go and ate in the car! Please remove the Bix from the romantic restaurant column

Pros: food preparation

Cons: Not romantic, value, service

Went to Bix for the first time two weeks ago, and loved it! Excellent food and the timing of the server and attitude couldn't have been better. Strongly encourage all to stay late for the music and drinks made with care.

Ratings_icons perfect other than hostess

althea

This is the guaranteed home run for business or pleasure. If the host staff werent so consistently awful it would be a true gem. The servers are awesome and every dish I have ever ordered has been solid. The surroundings are unparralelled. Someday they will get host staff that catches up with the rest of the place. Very SF for your out of towners. Great Ports and the bartenders are legit, if you ask for a dirty..you get one!

Pros: atmosphere, bartenders

Cons: host staff

An elegant, old-school place to get a perfect sidecar or martini. Love the big murals and all the dark polished wood.

Despite the edgy nature of the host Bix continues to offer a brief walk into the past with its 1930's atmosphere, terrific music and wonderful food.Everytime I visit I wait for Bogart and Hepburn to descend the stairs onto the scene.Bix is a terrific fun place to spend an evening dining, listening, drinking and watching !

Pros: atmosphere, food, crowd

Cons: parking/valet, host

Ratings_icons The Perfect Standard

karen02

Bix is a the perfect standard for those seeking good service, wonderful atmospere, active bar scene and consistently good food. The long time bartenders care about serving you and keep the energy going. Evening jazz brings you back to years long past while the food, whether at the bar on a table is always superb. The one draw back comes from the less then perfect service you may find in the lower dining area. It is a place I frequent with locals and always bring out of town guests to for drinks and dinner.

Pros: Overall Service, Ambiance, Valet Parking

Cons: Downstairs Service, Dessert
