After reading in the Silicon Valley Life magazine that my old friend Salvatore Calisi was the new executive chef I decided to take a ride to Fratellos, 1712 Meridian Ave, San Jose, to sample my Italian friends new menu. \r

Food arrives hot, and it's good. Entertainment on Friday night plays to the baby boomer crowd with a Dean Martin impersonator.
The owners are very friendly.
Sometimes the kitchen can be slow.

Pros: good variety of pastas and meats

Cons: service is inconsistent

My family and I arrived at this restaurant about 30 minutes before closing on a Saturday night. We called in advance so they were expecting us. My husband and I had a funny feeling that something wasn't right, being that there were only three tables that were occupied on a weekend night. (bad sign). The service was prompt, but the food was horrible. All of our entrees had very small portions and the sauces if any, were bland and cold. My pasta dinner did not have wine sauce like the menu posted, and the sausage was more like a pizza topping. My husband and kids had ravioli's and there may have been three or four small ravioli's on each plate. Let's just say that we left Fratello's feeling hungry and unsatisfied. This is one family that will never go back. And we dine out often!!!!

We have been coming here for years and have never had less than a very pleasing experience.
Everyone we've recommended this place to has said the same!
The owners greet you personally and in addition to the authentic food that bursts with flavor, we purposely come on Friday evenings to see and hear Matt Helm performing as "Dean Martin." We've had several friends swear he was lip-syncing to Dino's original recordings and love to see their reactions when they find out it's really Matt singing! He has truly captured Dean's style and warmth and effectively radiates that warmth to the patrons.
By all means - give it a try!

Our favorite authentic Italian restorante. Excellent food, great wine list. Owners/operators are originals with roots still in Italy. Friendly, warm people. Yes, "Dino" is cheesy (on purpose, I think), but endearing. It's where we go when we want good Italian food and a welcome smile. Everyone we have ever taken there (and there have been many) loves it as well.

We we served lukewarm soup; cappuccino in a demitasse, and my friend's latte was served in a glass w/o a handle, so it was too hot to hold. Food was good.

My colleague and I decided on this restaurant because it was recommended by a coworker. We now wonder if he was secretly holding a grudge against us, and wanted us punished. The service was so poor, that we wondered if they were politely trying to convince us to leave. We were told that swordfish was one of the specials that evening. When we ordered the swordfish, we were told that if there was not enough swordfish, bass would be substituted. We agreed. We also decided to order the artichoke soup we were told was being offered. When the soup arrived, it was so lukewarm that we were compelled to ask if it was actually a cold soup. We were told that it was not. A server offered to warm it for us. 10 minutes later, it was returned, only slightly warmer. We both got the swordfish, which was good. After dinner, we ordered a cappuccino and a latte. The cappuccino was served in a 2-3 oz demitasse. Even in Italy, cappuccino is serverd in a larger cup, usually 6-8 oz size. The latte was served in a glass tumbler. Since there was no handle, the server had to protect his hands w/a napkin. Obviously, my dinner partner could not hold the glass until it cooled. The service we received could not have been any worse if they'd met in a huddle to strategically plot the method to achieve the ultimate goal: make the guests pay to be offended. I wonder if all they really wanted was for us to leave.

Went had an early dinner on Friday night. The greeting was yeah..hi. My husband and I looked at each other and thought about leaving. It went down hill from there. Our server didnt know what the ingredients were in the specials. The food portions are small and pre-fab. . Not authentic italian food. Our drinks were empty. Our bread basket was empty... We won't go back

Having owned an Italian restaurant ourselves and only having prepared only home style cooking, we recommend Fratello's, wholeheartedly. The food is great the owners are genuinely hospitable and happy to see you there. The house chianti is very good and fairly priced. La sorella is a genuine as her brothers and is very accommodating. If you go there once you'll just keep going back.

Pros: In the vernacular "It's all good"

Cons: Even they would like it!

The "cheesy" lounge singer is only there on Friday nights and does his "Dean Martin" impersonation/performance for FUN. He's KNOWN for it. It's fun when you're in the mood for it and with the right group of friends and enough wine. For a romantic or more quiet evening meal come on Saturday or any other night. The food is excellent and authentic right-on Italian, as is the atmosphere (except on Fridays) :) Enjoy.

This place is great! They have really good italian food (chicken parm, cannelloni, seafood ravioli, sausage pollenta, caesar salad, bread pudding etc) and they have live music on the weekend. It's a nice atmosphere to go eat good food and relax.

Have always had excellent food here. Yes, The 1st reviewer mentioned extra wait time for certain things. This is true when they are busy, which is always the case. Atmosphere is excellent and the food and people have always been excellent. Wish they could expand.

Carmine (the owner) has a gold mine here

The food is excellent. I had the pasta carbonara and it was the best I have ever had. If you are looking for authentic Northern Italian food, this place is tough to beat. They are open for lunch which offers a mess less crowded environment.

We were seated immediately. 20 minutes to get menus. We then waited 15 minutes for a server. 15 minutes for our wine. Never brought kids drinks. Another 15 minutes before we ordered. 35 minutes until our entrees were brought out. We ordered dessert and coffees. Coffee came in 10 minutes... 10 minutes later we finally asked if iur dessert was coming... and 10 minutes later it arrived.

The food was acceptable. Dessert was ordinary. Prices ok.... there's better.

Fratello's on Meridian Ave. in Willow Glen is a good place to go to get a authentic Italian dinner- if you don't mind a super loud restaurant. It is tucked into a corner of a small shopping center, there is plenty of parking to go around. The restaurant consists of two main dining rooms and a small bar. We went for a quiet romantic dinner but that wasn't our experience at all. There was a cheesy lounge singer working the room, who actually tried to grab me to dance on the way out of the bathroom. While it's all in good fun, it would have been nice to be forewarned that he would be singing loudly near our table, and interrupting conversations to put on a show. The rest of the restaurant is just as loud. Our meal was solid, the chicken marsala was savory with a creamy wine sauce and fresh mushrooms. The margherita pizza was delicious with fresh mozzarella and basil. I thought the crust could be a bit thicker but I enjoyed it just the same.

PROS: Delicious pizza's and chicken marsala
CONS: Cheesy singer who interrupts dinners
