Gone downhill

by Mike F.

Their food used to be good, but now it's inedible. The beef is all gristle and fat, and the chicken is extremely fatty. The last straw was the hair I found in my bowl. Never going back.

Delicious takeout teriyaki

by Tiffany P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,423

A favourite from my college days to current working days, The Flame Broiler is a little take out counter with a simple but delicious menu. When I first visited, the options were beef or chicken, bowls or plates, with or without green onions. Now you can choose vegetarian options, all white meat, short ribs, kids' meals, or a smaller bowl size. My coworkers and I joke that they must put something addicting in their teriyaki because we actually get Flame Broiler cravings. Luckily, their service is usually quite fast, but definitely call ahead if you are in a big hurry, because the line can get ridiculously long at lunchtime.

My usual order there is a chicken bowl with green onions, to which I add extra little containers of teriyaki and hot sauce and a side of jalapenos. My boyfriend usually has the larger beef plate with onions. He also likes the short ribs, but be aware that sometimes they run out of those later in the day.

PROS: Fast and simple, friendly employees, coupons in student dollar stretchers
CONS: No indoor seating, counter area can get a bit overcrowded during busy hours

good food

by Stephanie T. | insider Insider | Rank: 23,512

flame boiler is a definitely a good place to eat college healthy. it's fast, just a teensy bit messy, but overall yum yum. the price went up so it's a little on the pricey side, but then again you'll probably almost spend as much as mcdonalds anyway. the only thing that could bump it up is a drive through window. the location makes it a little annoying cause you have to park in the bad parking lot and then walk there.

so-so

by Diana N. | insider Insider | Rank: 21,444

I used to love this place with it's enormous portions all for $5 but ever since the price went up, just slightly, but nonetheless up, and getting undercooked rice, my love for it has gone. The chicken is good, for me, and the beef is a little on the dry side. Healthy meal to grab on the run I believe and the aroma is hard to resist.

Flaming HOT

by Jack Y. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,140

Flame Broiler is located just off of the UCSD campus and provides a good quick meal for an average college student. Its meal are well proportioned and is relatively healthy. In fact, they pride themselves in being a healthy option. Order the beef bowl and pour on the hot sauce. They are famous for their hot sauce and they provide you ample mini cups of it. Good deal.

college student food.

by Fiona C. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,141

Pretty good food. Really tasty, the teriyaki sauce is anyway, yet the portions seem to be getting smaller and smaller than what I remember. Affordable.

their food never fails to please

for $7 you can get a decently sized, well balanced meal for under $7. They offer plenty of coupons which can be found online to make it even cheaper.
