Being part of a cooperative can be arduous at times, having to work along side other parents, but there is something about all the diversity, different view points and earnest effort that makes it all worth the work.
We keep growing and growing each year, from creating the foundation, organizational structure to increasing development and teaching focus, my daughter has increased her reading skills by 2 grades in just half a year.

Holistic, individualized pacing, assessments, counseling, all help me know my kid is on track. Music, Art, Trips, Hikes, Garden, Really upbeat staff. Clubs. I feel confident that my daughter is getting what she needs for a strong education as well as healthy emotional and social skills.

Believe what you will from the glowingly positive posts on this and other review sites. But don't make a move until you get substantial answers (as opposed to the typical "can't discuss confidential matters") to the extremely concerning issues you'll find at these links. Hint, you won't get any info of substance from current board members or marketing people: http://pdfcast.org/pdf/friends-western-school-board-resign and... http://www.mendolo.com/2012/09/14/and-then-the-wheels-came-off-the-school-bus/

As a parent of three, I learned that in the end teacher student ratio is the single most important thing about your child actually learning. The goal of FWS is to help your child become a lifelong passionate learner. The classes at FWS will never go over 14 - and the program is a wonderful eclectic combination of Multiple Intelligence Learning Lab, arts, and balancing instruction with experience. They learn about geography and then they go take a hike. They have had their rough patches - all schools do - and being small intensifies all the personal interactions - the good and the bad. But in the end this school has a unique vision of who children are, how children should learn and what they can achieve if you find out what their strengths are BEFORE you teach them.

Not many schools can boast that their enrollment tripled in just one year, but this school did just that. This very special new Quaker school begins its third year with 20 students and it really feels like a school now. The school is located on the grounds of the Orange Grove Friends Meeting house in Pasadena. The two-story building that serves as the school is surrounded by trees and a wonderful playground full of climbing equipment and different areas to play in. Upstairs in the schoolroom I was delighted to see how well organized it was. There are books galore, a brand new internet-ready computer, brightly painted walls, and a very well designed area for the students to study in - theres even a built-in low-cushioned area for the kids to kick back and relax on.
